I wish it were not. But it pretty much always was so, despite my trying not to. My only consolation is that Ida Presti sometimes had a similar thing happen, and several other fine players did also. Not a good thing though. Perhaps if I had had a teacher who would have pounced on that early on, I'd have managed to get rid of that habit.
You are an excellent teacher. I thank you for the videos. I hope your post more. I've watched all of them several times. I give lessons myself and found many valuable tips that I can pass on to my students. You've made me a better teacher.
Thank you for your kind words. I think the piece you are looking for is Liebeslied by Mertz. I worked from a facsimile of the original publication. I got Xeroxes of the complete works of Mertz from the archives of the Guitar Foundation of America many years ago. But by now I am sure it is published in modern editions as well - it is in his collection called Bardenklange. Lovely piece. Best of luck finding it and playing it.
Absolutely amazing. Remarquable technique. I've never had any teacher, but I learn so much little important things by watching you play again and again. But tell me: it seems to me that in this video you attack the strings with the left side of your nail, that is, that you're not using the Ida technique. Am I dreaming or is it correct? Anyway, thank you for all your nice advices. I'm working on the Ida Presti technique since one month, it's a nightmare to me, but I will get it, thanks to you.
I absolutely play starting the stroke on the right side of the nail, just as Presti did, but a lot of people try some odd things thinking they are doing what she did. Do watch my videos on the Presti technique. If it still is not clear after that, then it is possible I may be able to help more. In about a month or so, I plan to start offering guitar lessons online, using a webcam, to anyone who also has a webcam and is interested. Let me know to keep you informed if you are interested.
Well I do play lute music from lute tablature, but mostly on the guitar. I've only occasionally borrowed a lute to use in concert - and even then only a single string theorbo made by Hermann Hauser - so not a "real" lute. That Mertz piece is a bit tricky, but his more virtuosic pieces like his Hungarian Fantasy are harder yet - but everythign he does is playable and under the fingers - just pretty technically difficult sometimes.
Thank you for your kind words. Best etc, Alice

I find that your pinky finger in the right hand is always so tense. Why is that?
