om617 in an 83 jeep scrambler

What tranny did you use with the OM617? I have an 81 scrambler that I am interested in converting from GM-V8, and would love to hear what components the full swap will require.

owner kept the Mercedes automatic tranny.

Possible this Scrambler is only a 2WD vehicle...didn't crawl underneath to see if there was a front drive shaft.

Owner did mention that the stock 4.10 diff gear were a bit high.

One thing to remember, an Auto will be very turbo sweet-spot friendly :)

With a manual transmission, you will spool-up, shift, spool-up, shift, etc...

will this motor turn 1+1/4 ton axles (14 bolt rear and dana 60 front locker, 4.56s and 37" tall tires)? or should I stick with a 6.2L diesel?

planing on using an nv4500 and np208

@cblfhs Sorry cbifhs, don't have the answer to that.

I know that these motors provide comparable performance numbers to say a turbo'd Toyota 3b diesel motor.

the NON-turbo'd 3b motor was original equipment in BJ40s, which have an empty weight around 3.5K

4x4labs.com is currently installing one of these Mercedes diesels in a Toyota FJ55, which are probably closer to 4.5K...

How heavy is your rig?

wanted to let you know that this motor pushes a 4700lb box, running 35s and 4.56 fine.

Wish the sm465 was a bit more turbo sweet-spot friendly,, guess you pay a bit for that crawler tranny :)

@cblfhs Well it will turn them,you wont probably will be able to go to a burnout competition with this setup,but you will be surprised what the OM617 straight 5 and the OM603 straight 6 can do.They are very torquey engines and they will still run after you are dead and your children are dead and so on.
