Whenever I would go to my friend's house in the Keys, there would always be manatees in her canal. One time, she fell in on top of them, and we rode on them, gently of course. They're so amazing :)
I recently moved to jacksonville and swimming with manatees is top on the to do list. great video. I cant believe the mothers are super protective of their young around people! Here is a site i like that helps people find things to do near them.

I love both Manatees, and sea otters. Manatees are just the most amazingly peaceful creatures in the marine world. Manatees are not not dumb either. They were here long before humans even existed doing what they are supposed to do, and hence didn't need to worry about humans and their boats. I would be mortified if I ever hit one of these beautiful creatures accidentally with a boat. Unfortunately they were created with a color that perfectly camoflages them to the water where they live....
Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) they are an endangered species,.protected under the federal Endangered Species and Marine Mammal Protection Acts and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act. Touching a manatee on scuba can be punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and/or one year in prison. Anyone convicted of violating the state law faces a possible maximum fine of $500 and/or imprisonment for up to 60 days. Manatees can be observed without violating these laws. Look but don't touch on scuba!
@flauterfli Actually, Manatees perform at the same level cognitively as Dolphins and have shown complex problem solving skills. They just have poor eye sight and an awkward body shape, which makes people assume these slow moving, passive creatures are dumb!
i am a member of the save the manatee club (SMC), you should let the manatee approach you first because you may scare it and it will go into deep water and drown
It looks like what the manatee was trying to do. D: they're kind of...um, how to put it nicely, not the brightest creatures and as you probably know, have been reported to accidentally kill themselves out of fright. Or have a cardiac arrest. Yeaah...
@flauterfli Actually I think they are just gentle, slow, and very silly. I don't think they are dumb because they intelligent in other ways, like the other person said, with problem solving skills and memory. They are very sweet animals:)
they're amazing creatures. we rented a boat from a place in the Florida Keys. we've been there many times and have never seen a manatee, but the day we were returning the boat we saw one drinking from the rental places hose! they said that the manatee enjoyed the fresh water, so everyday around the same time they turn it one and stick it in the water. the manatee will drink from it for about a half an hour. it was awesome to see the guy up close. :)
That is entirely inappropriate behavior. There is a reason for this: manatees and other friendly creatures have a natural instinct to protect themselves but when they are conditioned by friendly swimmers then they gain a sense of trust - which in the future could cost its life. Please do not touch or give food or water to manatees.
I don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud but swimming up to and touching aquatic creatures while diving is bad etiquette. The manatee didn't seem to really enjoy it either. It turned away and went to leave. Fair game if the creature comes over to you and wants to interact but chasing animals in their home for a "trophy" touch isn't cool. That being said, in the past (through inexperience and youth I've been guilty of the same).
@wolfmother8719 no, in fact, you can go swimming with wild manatees in Florida. My best friend and I went for my birthday, it was amazing! They're very friendly and curious, they'll swim right up to you. We were lucky enough to encounter a mother and her calf; It was cute, the mom (exhausted, poor thing) fell asleep while we played with her baby (a very energetic one at that), they're very trusting creatures.
The manatee is like trying to get away in slow motion xD
