Guess he never had to block a weapon strike to his head, ah you live you learn. If I where his Sensei I'd hammerfist his head ever night till he got the message.
@otaku4karate and if I were your sensei I would show you it makes sense to sidestep instead of try to block anything with a high block when it should be used to strike under your chin or dislocate your joints. If I'm not responding to your comment properly than I apologize, but it sounds like that is what you mean. That is not what the techniques were made for.
@houseofthetruewayma Never been in a real fight or faced weapons on the street, have you? Rising block comes from weapon on weapon fighting. You can improvise a rising block into a chin strike, but it takes back to back rising blocks for that dislocate an arm thing (That's why the kata uses 2 sets) . Side stepping does come first, but when a weapon is being swung at you, the weapon will follow you. In Okinawa they do the same block wrist down, (still above the head) to avoid getting cut
@otaku4karate If you can take time feel free to go to my channel and watch the "setup sparring combinations video", because I explain kata application a bit, perhaps then you will see. That is if you are open minded enough to do that. And I'm VERY familiar with applications in real world.
@Andris717 Shotokan karate was one of the first martial arts that gained popularity due to Gichin Funakoshi's love for it. To say it isn't karate is saying what you breathe isn't air.

What happened to Taikyoku Ni Dan & Taikyoku San Dan? The only other thing that sucked about this video is when he was going back down the long trunk of the letter "I" when he was doing Hein Ni Dan, his back was turned to the camra, so you don't know which hand grabbed his wrist. Other than that, I feel this is a great video.
