Thank you for the clarification from a German perspective! Too many of the media here seem to want to portray it as the Obama campaign luring Germans to their boring speech using a wildly popular German band... like they were tricked into staying or something. Now, I personally know that's not true, but too many people believe that lie and don't think for themselves. ;)

The dancing German is actually an American high school teacher on an annual summer field trip with students. And he really dances like that.

No, I wasn't offended at all. It just sounded like the usual talking points our right wing radio tries to sell. We had a rally here in Texas and with no concert whatsoever, he completely filled a large stadium with over 25,000 people and plenty waiting outside because there was no room for them. They try to make like it's only because of the concert, which is why I even bothered to reply in the first place, to dispute that. Anyway, no worries... I hope it all works out in November. :)

Imagine watching a newsreel of Churchill or Roosevelt at Yalta, with pictures of people limbo-dancing nearby, taking pics on their cell-phones and generally giving the thumbs up to the cameras. We'd look back and think: "Wow, for all that was happening then, they can't have cared all that much."

Maybe a better example is Kennedy's speech in Berlin. The difference is: when Kennedy speaks, the crowd listens in silence and then cheers at the punchlines. e.g "Let them come to Berlin." A great line which he repeats several times. Also see Martin Luther King's speeches.

When Obama speaks, there's just a steady wall of noise behind him, because the crowd don't know (or care) which bits are the punchlines, so the power of the speech to deliver memorable phrases is ruined.
