Wow. My husband got me an electric bass for Christmas this year. I'm so excited to start learning. I've played upright bass a few times. The positioning of the left hand is giving me problems on electric. My wrist is sore. Any suggestions?
@kpas: This is something I had to deal with when I started learning bass. It's a matter of adjustment. Proper positioning means 1 finger per fret, but for an untrained hand, you'll feel the strain really quickly. It's just a matter of sticking with it, the more you practice, the stronger your hand and fingers become. Try playing a major scale higher up the neck, your wrist will be less strained. Once you get more comfortable, start playing lower down the neck (like C major, 3rd fret A string).
@kpas Something worth trying, too, is having a replacement wrist installed if yours is sore. I always carry a spare wrist in my gig bag just incase, you know?
To me the 3142 is the most strenuous. I can feel those tendons (or something!) snap when reaching #3 onto the next string. Very good exercise. Thank you!
There's an error on the first two sets of the 3rd column. It should be 3124 and 3142. You repeated the 3's. Great exercise though, very helpful. Thanks.
Can you make a video on how to actually strum and play. i'm having trouble because I keep twanging some strings. Idk if it's me or the guitar or what I should do.
something you can get out of most fitness books... that third finger again. I realize that many use their third finger, but coming from a contrabass background the third finger is never used until you get to the higher registers (say 12th fret and beyond). I have found that using the 3rd and 4th finger as a single unit (even on the electric), has done little to limit my bass playing. Just my opinion, intonation is better if you don't use the third finger to fret (helps to hold down string)
@TiMickQC Actually, I just made a comment. Having come from a contrabass background, it is the third finger that is not necessary in getting the proper fretting. I normally use 1, 2 and 4 as my fretting fingers. It is a matter of strengthening the pinky. Watch most jazz bassist and you will only see the use the third finger as the high registers.
@TiMickQC I wanted to cut my pinky off for years but it's o.k., just practice, it WILL get better. It's still a pain in the ass for me sometimes but I can do alot more with it. Just play, til it hurts.
i still have no clue what ur talkin about man.... i just got into bass a couple months ago and never practiced or anythin but i dont understand nothin, i can only read tabs
I have a 5 string Ibanez and I don't read music. I'm trying to understand what you are doing. I know that the number tells you what finger to use but how do you know what sting and what fret?
you don't you use the 4 fingers everywhere, like you can be up at the 17's and do the 2134 cuz it isn't telling you wwhere, but which finger order u use for the 4 frets ur onlike it could be on any frets like 16 15 17 18 or 3 2 4 5 and you can mix anything up like string order and stuff
I enjoy this, It is an exercise I never thought of but I will surely try it out. And btw don't listen to these idiots, they obviously just had their parents buy them a first act bass so they think they know everything
Yeah, the bass player for the Foo Fighters is laughing at you all the way to the proverbial bank. As well as a great number of other famous bass players. I think I'll keep my mind open to ALL options. Since both generate music....and cash. But you can stick with your "there's only one way to play a bass" mentality. What about guys like Victor Wooten who do a lot of tapping?.....Oh, I forgot, that must be out too? Good luck to ya.
hi. I am bassoon player, but I play bass guit in band. I used my professional knolege, but I would like you to suggest me some book with scales (but not only tabs...i need sheet...like classical music system). There is a lot about bass that I don't know, but I want to learn!
