Where did any of you guys get that it was a Chevy engine in his Merc??? If any of you car experts New at all what you were talking about you would know that it is a FORD!!!!!! Ford 302's were used in mustangs and all ford and merc. models.
Totally agree -- It is utter madness to replace this fine old cherry flattie for a chevy 302; The car will NEVER be as rare, collectable, stylish, valuable, dependable or interesting again. WHAT is the fool thinking? He ALREADY has another fine hot-rod to mess with that he can make a 2nd cruiser, why mess with success? It makes NO Nada Zero sense.
Then again, some hot-rodder likely made a fine score, tho prob having to shell out what, $2-3000? Wonder what it did sell for.
I inhereted a 1950 ford 2 door from my grandmother a few years back. I had the motor and transmission rebuilt and the car painted. I drove just a month ago from california to washington, and that old flattie did a good job at 60mph in overdrive. now some here in spokane just wave and thumbs up when they see
my ford going down the road. this man shouls keep his in the car, it will make the trip, just keep oil on hand as they like to eat some at times.
These old dudes love to throw away flatheads for chevy 350s. Shame. Hmmm actually every time someone puts a flathead out of an original car it makes my flathead ford worth more. So... go for it.
Hare2112-- You hit it DEAD ON- read my last- reply-It is always the inbreeder that f@#ks- up a fine old car. As of this week i drove - a 50 merc-coupe home with my uncle following- with a trailer-40-coupe-ford-49-cad-slant back the old bastard that had these DIED before- he f@#ked up these fine cars- the merc drove- back to Tennessee 1,473 miles no sweat-!As of 2-6-08 i have rescued 71old cars-28-are ford flatheads-all this since 2006-(the 40 ford- has the rare elko heads )---!!!!
It would be the absolute height of stupidity to take a rare surving car like this and butching it up removing the flathead engine and replacing it with a run of the mill 302.
This car is too nice to be chopped up and you should know that.
this old fuck has money-and no brains-hope he drops dead before he fucks up this fine car--he has a perfect cruiser- with that fresh flattie-i would drive it anywhere- i agree with (1musiclvr) this is one stupid old fart--this is why i dont sell my old tin too many inbreeders with no sense of history- or going old school--with minor mods- but keep original engine--we just returned from thanksgiving trip --me in my 40 ford- 9 hours both ways--no sweat!
I had a 53 ford in High school, those car's are worse than old out board motors and just reliable a cheep hore. Their Hell when their well but do suck. The new motor will have electronic ignition
nice...would be a shame to separate the flattie that has survived and moved that car for so long though, would be like rewriting the Declaration of Independence on a new sheet of paper, it would be easier to read but not nearly as interesting
really cool! VERY hard to find running flat head Fords. Everyone ripped them out and put "modern" Chevy (or Ford) engines in them. I'm curious, why not keep the car "original" with the engine you have now? Nice car!

what is the matter with this guy? ruining this car by swapping out the flathead with a Chevy 302 is insane

What an idiot, ruining this car. Why not take a hacksaw and chop the top while you're at it?

I'd trust that old flathead with my life! I once drove a 54 (Canadian) Ford Flathead for four hours straight, flat out, on Montana interstate.
ThePrairiewind 2 years ago
I'll just sell the 302 and keep the flat head. Why fix it if it ain't broken?

I'd trust that flattie more than a 302. Granted the 302 is a good motor, you just can't beat a good running flathead.

Leave it alone! That car needs that flathead, and that flathead needs that car!
