Each western country is facing exactly same problem as the US, we cannot compete on global market with Asia because of the large disparities in wages. If you Google Wikipedia list of countries by exports you will find US is more like 1/16 the world economy.

Clearly exports does not represent anywhere near the whole story. We (USA) consume over 1/4 of the World's goods and services, even though we represent only 1/23 of the World's population. To facilitate all of this consumption, requires the need for other productive capacities, such as transportation, sales, service, finance, r&d, technology, etc. USA GDP is = to the next 4 countries combined(China, Japan, Germany, and Great Britain).
