ok, my ds broke at the hinge on the right side of the ds (not where the wires go up to the screen). do I need to somehow replace the entire top, or is there a piece i can put in. the part that broke was the part attatched to the top part.

You dont have to remove the WiFi board either, just disconnect the antenna wires (helps if you drop some cotton under the slot to pull them back under too)

The biggest problem with this is threading the ribbon cable through the hinge, I got a brand new screen & managed to slightly rip the cable threading it back through on my 1st attempt.

It helps if you remove the metal insert from the hinge, it also helps if you CAREFULLY make the slit in the hinge bigger by gently skimming it wider with a sharp stanley blade WHILE ITS DISMANTLED & the cables arent there.

(failed to mention the removal of the LED/hinge cover!)

@gonghay Nope, The ribbon cable joins the "mother board" in the base through the hinge, unfortunately theres no connectors in the top 1/2, the wires are soldered directly to the screen.

Hello, I'm trying to repair my DS, I've got it a few days ago, and the top screen seems scratched. I've opened it and there's a tin layer on top of it, that seems to be the problem. Can I remove it? I don't have a replacement, yet.

i've fixed a whole loada DSes but one thing that escapes me is how you get the rubbers out without damaging them or marking the case, how do you do it?

@spleenharvester3x6 If you're careful you won't scratch the case, but the screw covers will be messed up no matter what you do. Either replace them or stick them back as is and don't worry about it. They're usually not too messed up just a little bent in one corner.

you cant remove the wifi connector from my ds board without breaking it and there is no way i can see of removing the ribbon cable without ripping it out my ds lite aint the same as yours bro

@wigbro1 They only make one kind of DS Lite and they're all exactly the same. If yours looks different it's not a ds lite.

Yeah, that happened to me too. It started out as a crack, later on fell out and had the whole right part of my DS hanging by a thread. The top screen was ok at first, but later started turning to weird shades of red and blue when i moved it ever so slightly,and later on being red and blue all the time. I acually fiddled with the top screen brownish cable whatever thingy, and now the top screens fine again o.o;; not sure if that works for everybodys, but it worked for mine :].

buy a soldering iron (about 30 watts tops) not a gun. they're cheap. Use ROSIN core solder for electronics ONLY. Changing just the outer screen is easier. Disassemble but DON'T take the upper screen cable out. Putting it back through (if not ruined taking out) needs plastic tools (not metal!). Snapping upper case together is extremely delicate job. Watch for and straighten squashed clips. Be careful to line up power switch properly! Good Luck. Screen replacement took me 3 hours.

This video is very similar to another one that I actually used to repair my DS. The 2 biggest stumbling blocks were soldering the speaker wires and getting the ribbon cable in there JUST right. This is very tricky, because the only way to test it was to put it all together, put the battery in, try it, take it apart again, etc. At first, it wouldn't power on. Then after adjusting the ribbon cable, the top screen would light up, but no text. After 5-6 tries, I finally got that cable in right.

I'd say that replacing it is worth a shot.

And I wouldn't trust anything told to me by game stop. The screen is powered by the same cable that the video signal is run on, so if it was "disconnected," it wouldn't work at all.

I confirmed this during my replacement. I didn't completely connect the cable correctly, and not only did the top screen not light up, but my DS would shut itself down after a couple seconds.

The white one is the mic, black is wifi. Since they're coaxial wires, there only needs to be one for the wifi antenna.

Good video, but I wouldn't remove the ribbon cable in the order you did.

Personally I prefer to remove the top half from the bottom half completely before i open the top half the DS. There is less risk to the ribbon cable if you do it this way, but I guess it doesnt matter seeing as this is a video for replacing a screen but if anyone is using this video as a guide to replace the case I'd recomend doing it that way.

If I took the top screen out of my normal DS, would it work in my DS lite. My DS Lite's top screen is really discolored, but other than that works fne because I left it in a cooler one time. My DS' top screen is fine, but I don't use it because the card slot is messed up. So will the top screen on my original DS work on my DS Lite?
