I see the open drawers in each room; likely people took anything worth taking. Must have also been people looking for drugs. The power still on is weird cause who pays the bill ?
I worked at St. Mary from 1983-1987. Moved away from NW Indiana in 1987. I swear I recognize a couple rooms. Were your videos shot on the first or second floor? I worked for a year on 2 South, then CCU on the first floor. Sad but fascinating to see the video. Ancilla Domini (the order of Nuns who founded the place) sold the hospital to a private owner in the early 90s due to bad financials. The new owner didn't last long from what I heard. Lots of great people worked there. Wild.
@NinaOliveTree No I am not a racist. JUST LOOK AT THE FACTS DUMBASS! Blacks move in the area and Gary went to hell! Back in the 60's Gary was nice and not crime infested dump like it has since around 1975. Look at Merrillville now it is turning into a DUMP! Blacks move in and your town turns into a DUMP FACT! FACT!
@slworking2 and @NinaOliveTree Yea Whatever you stupid ass's say @NinaOliveTree and slworking2 enjoying the snow it was 72 and sunshine today (1-19-2012) and tomorrow is going to be 78 (1-20-2012) where I live. Take a good look around you two and enjoy your GHETTO LIFE!!!!

I went to the Holy Angels Catholic School right across the street from there back in the 80's. It was open then, but I don't think anyone cared. Amazing seeing this video, and yet, ashamed that Gary Government seems not to give a fuck about anything up there. Thanks for the post.
@evilgenius314 no evil, the city, in their infinite wisdom, fired me before they started the remodel, and since they don't know the building like I did, they probaly don't know how to power down the east wing :), adds up to one hell of a electric bill for the broke city of Gary. Glad it's not my headache anymore.
I was born in Mercy hospital in 1959. Michael Jackson was born there in 1958. I have heard that the hospital maternity wards were segregated then. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?
@SalesDivvy Very cool that you were born here. The City of Gary currently owns this building and is using one of the wings as a police station. I was brave (and stealthy and maybe insane) enough to wander around inside and shoot footage anyway). I don't know much history about this place - other than hearing that Michael Jackson was born here. Maybe some of the other commenters can help?
I can kind of guess why the lights are on. the pabst brewery in milwaukee was abandoned from 1997-2009 before they made it into condos. they would keep the electricity on to give people an impression that the place is not abandoned and heavily guarded/secured.
@spuddapotato2494 Yeah, you're most likely right. I'm sure the City hasn't forgotten to turn the lights off - they want to deter vandals and scrappers. This move seems to be working - I haven't seen much damage done here.
@slworking2 haven't seen much damage? there isn't a window left in the east wing below the 2nd floor and they have been stripping copper right under the cities noses. Constant vandalism.
@jpeek177 This hospital is located at the corner of 6th Ave and Tyler Street in Gary. I don't know whether it's for sale. The back wing of the building is being used a a police station - but is sealed off from the abandoned portion.
All of my siblings were born here but when in came time for my birth my father decided to have delivery at Methodist due to the rule if it came to where the mother or the child was in danger the child would be saved.
All of my siblings were born here but when in came time for my birth my father decided to have delivery at Methodist due to the rule if it came to where the mother or the child was in danger the child would be saved.
I wanna say it's been nearly 20 yrs since the hospital closed. My father's mother and my mother were nurses there during the 80s and into the 90s. The pediatric ward (where my mom worked) had what I still consider to be the nicest playroom of any hospital I've ever been to. If you get a chance to go back, could you try to check it out? I'd hate to see it's deterioration yet have a weird curiosity just the same.
this is weird....not only that theres power, that fans are on and lighhts are..on... if they had been left on from time of bandoned you think not working anymore... so who turned them on? nice videos... i love this sorta thing... i used to do same sorta thing..just never anywhere as interesting and didnt have video cam then..
@Crazyfuqndude I see your channel got deleted. Well, considering that this place has been abandoned for a very long time, it IS a big deal that the fans and lights still work.
None of the Jacksons were born here, this was a white-Catholic hospital at the time they were born. The Jackson children that were born in Gary were at what is now Methodist on Grant!
@manteno Manteno. Ah - I had heard from various sources that Michael was born here, but, of course, anyone can say anything on the internet. Thanks for the correction.
@manteno Not true, white and catholic had nothing to do with the treatment people got there, He was born there at St Mary's as were a lot of black and white children.
@TheBryanSaraShow One isn't allowed to go right in, but there's a big opening in the back side of the building that I just walked right in through. Be careful, though, as the Gary Police Station is right next door. :D
@PhallusKnifeFight Some of the buildings in back are already acting as a police station. I think the city may have plans to eventually use the front buildings to expand the station, but I don't know for sure.
@abixooxooo I'm not sure why it closed, but it's probably due to the rapid decline in population. I didn't happen to notice any asbestos here. And, asbestos is only dangerous when it's airborne.
@slworking2 And it is airborne in there, worked there a long time, the asbestos isn't the issue though, it's the mold you were breathing in, and bird dung, namely pigeon, that's going to show up sooner, good luck. And yes, Michael Jackson was borne there. The city of Gary is broke, maybe they shouldn't have been so quick to get rid of me, I would have powered down the building and fire alarm system. Have a great day, don burton
@abixooxooo I read on Wiki, Crime rate, 84% was African American, This is so true Africans are still barbaric as today. If African people continue to run from wars, there would be Chaos every where.
@abixooxooo I'm guessing you don't know what's happening in the other side of the world. Have you seen Blood Diamond the movie (basically explains Africans)? Why else is there so many immigration?
