I worked at St. Mary from 1983-1987. Moved away from NW Indiana in 1987. I swear I recognize a couple rooms. Were your videos shot on the first or second floor? I worked for a year on 2 South, then CCU on the first floor. Sad but fascinating to see the video. Ancilla Domini (the order of Nuns who founded the place) sold the hospital to a private owner in the early 90s due to bad financials. The new owner didn't last long from what I heard. Lots of great people worked there. Wild.

I went to the Holy Angels Catholic School right across the street from there back in the 80's. It was open then, but I don't think anyone cared. Amazing seeing this video, and yet, ashamed that Gary Government seems not to give a fuck about anything up there. Thanks for the post.

@evilgenius314 no evil, the city, in their infinite wisdom, fired me before they started the remodel, and since they don't know the building like I did, they probaly don't know how to power down the east wing :), adds up to one hell of a electric bill for the broke city of Gary. Glad it's not my headache anymore.

I was born in Mercy hospital in 1959. Michael Jackson was born there in 1958. I have heard that the hospital maternity wards were segregated then. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

@SalesDivvy Very cool that you were born here. The City of Gary currently owns this building and is using one of the wings as a police station. I was brave (and stealthy and maybe insane) enough to wander around inside and shoot footage anyway). I don't know much history about this place - other than hearing that Michael Jackson was born here. Maybe some of the other commenters can help?

I can kind of guess why the lights are on. the pabst brewery in milwaukee was abandoned from 1997-2009 before they made it into condos. they would keep the electricity on to give people an impression that the place is not abandoned and heavily guarded/secured.

@spuddapotato2494 Yeah, you're most likely right. I'm sure the City hasn't forgotten to turn the lights off - they want to deter vandals and scrappers. This move seems to be working - I haven't seen much damage done here.

@jpeek177 This hospital is located at the corner of 6th Ave and Tyler Street in Gary. I don't know whether it's for sale. The back wing of the building is being used a a police station - but is sealed off from the abandoned portion.

I wanna say it's been nearly 20 yrs since the hospital closed. My father's mother and my mother were nurses there during the 80s and into the 90s. The pediatric ward (where my mom worked) had what I still consider to be the nicest playroom of any hospital I've ever been to. If you get a chance to go back, could you try to check it out? I'd hate to see it's deterioration yet have a weird curiosity just the same.

@TheBryanSaraShow One isn't allowed to go right in, but there's a big opening in the back side of the building that I just walked right in through. Be careful, though, as the Gary Police Station is right next door. :D

I don't exactly know how much money goes into powering a hospital, but it can't be something to sneeze at.

@PhallusKnifeFight Some of the buildings in back are already acting as a police station. I think the city may have plans to eventually use the front buildings to expand the station, but I don't know for sure.

I actually walked past this building after coming across this video and found that all the lights were still on.

@abixooxooo I'm not sure why it closed, but it's probably due to the rapid decline in population. I didn't happen to notice any asbestos here. And, asbestos is only dangerous when it's airborne.

@slworking2 Hard to tell what exact color it is from this video, but I believe real blood dries to a darker shade of red, almost a dark brown, even.
