Classical music is based on humanism, and humanism was dead around First World War. This is not classical music, and requires different kind of understanding, different criteria, different context.
This sound is more the result of a lack of inspiration or a try to be ""original"". Anyway, I don't call this music, but as a sound, it's an interesting sound.
@LesbianStraightGay This can't be heard the same way you hear Mozart and co. I can not relax, or feel anything when I hear this. I think this is what separates music from a simple noise. Feelings. I'm just saying this sounds like someone, who thinks everything was done in music, and tries to go farther, but in my opinion, it's to far... But if you like it, and take pleasure by listening to this, then it's great ;)
Does anybody know where I can find a site where they explain everything about this music? I wanna know about its meaning and its influence on listeners.
When the Shah of Iran was in power he commissioned Xenakis to compose this piece, but Xenakis turned the tables by dedicating it to political prisoners. Your appreciation may be enhanced with the realization that it vocalizes the anguish but sublime dignity of the oppressed -with whom Xenakis could readily identify.
Music: from Greek, meaning "art of the muses". this has historically (culturally) come to mean the art of organized sound. under that definition, this qualifies as "music", which is a problematic word to begin with.
common music notation represents an infinitesimally small subset of the possible sound world. The score for this work doesn't even deviate much from such notation's common format... the "GREAT" composers were glorified typists.
A beautiful piece with a fascinating story behind it.
@walterm85 I appreciate that you're defending this work, but I am very concerned by your claim that "great" composers are "glorified typists." it's an egregious, gross oversimplification. it's fine to define music as "organized sound," but calling a composer a "glorified typist" implies that all there is to composing is notation, which is unbearably incorrect. (you've got to come up with it before you can write it down, right?)
*lol* do some studies in music theory as well as in stochastic processeses and game theory, which are inextricably linked with Xenakis' compositions. His works are by no means an attack against Mozart.

@WaveBlue Not sure how this is less musical than, say, Mozart or Bach.
