Small jib on the Gunboat. If I had to bet pink slips, I'd put my money on Peter's Gunboat. I think they are the two best catamaran designs. It would be good to see a real race between the two with Peter at the helm of one and Chris on the other--that would be a classic for our time--better than America's Cup racing.
who says the Gunboaters are even trying, they are probably having a beer and looking the other way. Or maybe they don't know how to get the max from their boat, whatever, both nice and fast boats.
The destination of both vessels is the same bay. They are moored a couple hundred feet from each other. If our definition of surpass is that one vessel overtakes the other then I think there is no argument here. You will have to trust me, we were probably a mile back, and the video, poor as it may be, shows the point where we passed the Gunboat. Since the video is incomplete, you don't see us make it past the ferry they had to tack for. Yes, many factors, not a true test, just a fun video.
marcowitkamp: The video starts late into to mile of catching up. In any case, We were all just cruising, this is just for fun. We are not saying one is better than the other, we are just saying Chris White is a great designer and have had our A55 going 27 kts. So take you Gunboat top speed, and you can judge for yourself Kts/Dollar value. BTW, MLynch, no one would call this a working class boat, maybe you should step aboard before you judge. Granted there are no fancy rudders that fall off.
Meh...I'm not sure the two boats are comparable. The Gunboat is a luxury yacht. The A55 is nice and all, but it's a very...workmanlike...vessel that excels at sailing. I would guess that if you "prettied" the A55 up, you'd probably add a few pounds and it wouldn't sail any better than a Gunboat. I don't have any axe to grind here either way, I'm just observing...
The Gunboat 62 isn't blue, it just looks that way in the video. The name is Spirit, Ironically, the same name as the A55. In any case, pretty much the same wind, same angle, same destination. You might note the dingy being towed by the A55 as well;) In any case if the Gunboat wanted to break out their code 0 it would have been over (although they may not have made the corner)
ehrlichhe I really tried to resist, but there's a reason the Gun Boat looks suspiciously like the A55. Do you know which one was designed first? hmmm. You should look into the facts before you throw out criticism of Chris White (totally uncalled for and an Ironic statement due to the history here)
@irievibe agree with you. i read lots about gun boats and cw designs seems like gunboat copied the cw design. which is a big complement to cw but dont make one bettter than the other. different price range boats for different people.
Yes lets not split hairs here fellas... very nice boats here, if you want to ck out a CW hammerhead 54 (a true runner) do a seach for jphusta and scroll down to flying fish. No comments on the loose leach line in the genoa though, we had just finished a race that finished in very light air and then (after the race) out of nowhere came 14 knots on the beam, I tightened her up on the next tack.
no, now after seeing the video i have defently changed my mind. If you want to compare boats have them fly the same sails, and sail TOGETHER. Who knows what kind of wind the gunboat has 1/2 a mile away in light air. These 2 boats have a bit of a track record racing from Heineken last year and theres a reason why the gunboats started with formula 40s and chris white with lagons.
ur right all i can say is that were talking about some of the fastest cruising boats on the planet so maybe i said the wrong thing but i have seen boats in this league do the wind speed in conditions like this. Since the atlantic is not matching the true wind the wind angle should not have come up to much, i would say their true heading is maybe 105-120 degress. Still 2 very impressive boats!!
at the risk of splitting hairs, the wind gauge is showing 11 knots of wind on an 'apparent' beam reach, which is to say the boat is actually making 9 knots on a 'true' broad reach - not too shabby in my view.

I don´t know what this video is trying to prove, but there is no overtaking going here at all. I think the title of this video is rather misleading.
