May he rest in peace, may his descendants some day be granted the opportunity to serve their country once again as monarchs, it's their rightful place!
The Habsburgs need to wake up and realize that their former empire extended beyond Austria and Hungary. Former Habsburg dominions like Slovakia, Czech Republic, Croatia, etc. share a common connection. As a Bohemian, the Habsburgs treated Hungary as the "favorite child" and the empire left what is now the Czech and Slovak Republics hanging dry. The Habsburgs were the "Kings/Queens of Bohemia," so why can't they live up to their title and reach out?
This is not meant in anyway to be disrespectful to any of the Catholic community for I count myself among the faithful, but in this world that has rid itself of all monarchs, the Church is the last remaining place where imperial and royal protocol is still observed_. The court ritual of old was meant for the one who representative of God the King in heaven.
@lichtbroder, Thanks for the correction, then; I didn't catch the location, and yes, of course, since WW II the loss of the Jewish population has left the Catholics in the majority. (I taught for Benno Weiser Varon for a time, so I'm very familiar with that part of the history). I also regret the intrusion of more cameras than necessary into a service, but am grateful for the magnificent pictures of the church. As a liturgical historian, I try not to engage in quibbles over veils, but to pray.
@dellaroux Hello. Thank you, but may I respectfully correct you on one more thing? The tragic loss of the Jewish population in Austria during WW2 has nothing to do with Catholics now being in the majority there. They have always been in the majority in Austria for as long as Austria has been Christian.
@dellaroux As a liturgical historian, you don't "quibble over veils, but pray"? How superior. In an earlier post, you took the time to comment on them! The wearing of veils by women was customarily expected at Tridentine Masses, and this was directly tied to Scripture. Head coverings for women, though not part of the liturgy proper, played an important part in Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant liturgical settings for centuries. The wearing of them in church is "historical": your field.
@KoelnerDomChannel Sehr gut gekontert.
While I am glad to be able to observe this recording, I do feel it is regrettable to have cameras moving across the front, up and down the aisles, etc. One or two fixed cameras would have been adequate, and impinged less on the sanctity of the Liturgy.
I note some women in the congregation veiled, but not in the choir, which is actually a liturgical function.
@ejmroz There is no longer any canonical or moral obligation for women to wear head coverings when attending or participating liturgically in the Mass. Head coverings are "expected" for Mass in the Extraordinary Form, but are not required on penalty of sin. Raymond Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, that body being the highest authority on Canon Law after the Pope, reiterated this in April, 2011.
@lichtbroeder Ummm, that's a Catholic dictum. If this is an official German service, it could be (would be more likely to be) German, in which case the canonical rules of the Lutheran church would apply. I don't think it's defined anyplace in the text (my German is less than it could be) and the only clues might be the liturgical garb of the participants, which does in fact look more Catholic than Lutheran, but I would want to know to what confession the service was in fact belonging first.
@lichtbroeder This comment should not have been removed as spam; it was perfectly reasonable. My reply is to the text I received which was: "@dellaroux I am not sure what you mean by "official German service". This requiem mass was held in Austria. The Hapsburgs are Roman Catholic, as are most Austrians." I believe this contributor merely hit the "reply" button twice in error, something I have done as well when the 'post' function does not work perfectly and it seems as if a post has been lost.
@dellaroux This requiem mass was held in Vienna, Austria, at St. Stephens. The Hapsburgs are Roman Catholic, as are most Austrians. This is a Roman Catholic service.

Why give this type of funeral mass for someone who rebuked the monarchy, gave up his right to the thrown, and sold his soul to the mason's?
