  • Whack an old boiler on it and you have a lovely green hybrid!

  • Houston, we have a problem.

  • @SegaMario its Euston for Railways

  • hence the reason they are called internal combustion engines

  • oh stop being so critical!!!!!! her afterburner is lit!!!!!!!

  • So basically, because of the huge fuckoff turbo only producing it's peak airflow (around 80psi) when under throttle for at least 6 seconds, giving it time to spin up so therefore prior to that time, there isn't enough air entering the cylinders along with the diesel, causing an incomplete combustion hence the flames and 'soot' ?

The above sentence might 'gramatically fail' on many levels, but I don't care. It's 2am =\

  • and they said only ge locos shot flames out!!!!!!!

  • Slug 6 doing wot it does best

  • @okotokspaul is slug the nickname for a 37 in railfreight grey?

  • @EWS37109 a slug a class 37/9 - so 37906 is "SLUG 6".one of the best performing preserved diesels out there

  • @okotokspaul ah i see. well being 37/9 they must be top spec!! so why slug then?....are they the ones with the slightly longer bonnets and with extra bonnet grills?

  • @EWS37109 These got the slug name because they are slow to take power after you open the power controller compared with a normal 37. Just meant a few seconds later when they would start to pull.

  • @formidable38 ah, i see. thanks.

  • @EWS37109 No probs.

  • @formidable38

    they had a choke of some kind in the air lines to the governor so there is a delay;

the power handle controls air to the governor to be simplistic.

    Some had that choke/restriction removed.

Its purpose was to reduce smoke when full power was needed but turbo was off boost.

  • @tpvalley I see. That would explain the black smoke on initial 'throttle up'. Turbo lag = black smoke and flames, bit like an Alco.

  • @formidable38

    exactly like an alco!!!

on diesel cars with mechanical injection they have a boost compensator or anti smoke valve, this basically has a pressure sensing diaphragm or valve that only gives full fuelling when on boost.

    Personally, I like the smoke!

  • u could see this sort of thing at night often out of my window when trains were trains...

sometimes it means a faulty injector or valve.

  • Awesome! external combustion!

  • oooohhh hellfire... !!!

  • Holy shoot scary!
