Thank you so much for inspiring me to learn this song. You are a great guitarist and a great singer also, your version is just as good as the original!
I love your work, you are an inspiration. I'll never be able to play like that, but I do like to dream. good job, Ian is proud that his vision is continued.
I've found this song tonight and there's just no chance of getting it out of my mind... I'd have a great request: could you possibly tab it and send it to me? My hearing of music may not be that bad when it comes to getting into the mood but figuring out notes is not my best side...
This is another brilliant performance Jack. This obviously shares a few things with Salamander so, maybe if I can get somewhere with that, I may have a crack at this too. Watching you play just inspires me to do more. The bit at 2:56 where it builds up and then hits the full power with the lower strings gave me goosebumps! Great stuff.
Did you know my friends and SIU alum Rich Whitley who co-wrote Rock and Roll High School or Steve Hammel who worked for Dick Orken (Chicken Man)'s Radio Ranch in LA and FOX TV's radio ad branch in LA? Steve cast v/o talent in LA.
I think you lived on Elm the summer of 75. I lived in Mae Smith that summer. Then I moved to the Quads, then to Lewis Park, then to the corner of College and University, then to Freeman St. and eventually to Makanda. But the clincher is fall 74-75 I lived on the first floor of Baldwin Hall. I really don't think you'll remember me. Does the name Mona or Ramona ring a bell?
I am not Mona but I thought you might remember her. I have no memory of you living at the Quads. Some of the people I knew who lived there were David Schuster, Dave Horowitz, Barry Cohn, Mark Becker, Gary Pinsel, Mark Plotski, Neil Schlotski, a dealer named Hollywood, Jodi Herron, Debbie Kyler, Nancy Stockton and my roommate Mona.
Unlike you, I remember very little about my life, and especially the 70's which are very hazy to me, but I believe the Elm Street house was green. Maybe it wasn't even Elm St. I Lived in the Quads, however 75 - 76 and would like to see the video....where's this other channel? J. Annanances
@annanances Wow... I just came back here to guess Bob or Lauren, but since Lauren was Beth's friend, she would not have used Marc's last name. Marc and I took a course "Feature Film Workshop" and made a feature over the summer of 1976. However, the "Quads" portion was shot by my roommate Jim Moy. I didn't know many people at the Quads, although I lived there at the exact same time! I like that you really are Johnny Annanances. I actually post my videos to elicit mysterious visitors like you.
OK,for several years you were the cool dude who covered "Janine".Went to hear iggy tonight and you even cover '5 ft 1",now we are onto Tull.............Will you come to my party.................go on tell me you do zoo music gal too!!!............Love your chameleon voice!!!Meg
has Ian Anderson commented on that. I was very impressed.. especially at the start. Your guitar was superb I noticed the electric sound you imitated and you spaced the notes out superbly.. I really like the high riff which had that tull spooky and ethereal quality and the singing good though I could see your slight difference from the original in rhythm made pronounciation difficult sometimes. Do you perform to an audience? what are your other favourite music stuff?
Excellent work dude! This is one of my fave Tull songs, but unfortunately one of many that I can't find a tab for :-( So I'm totally with those guys below me and would sure like a tab for this. So far, I've been gonig at it for three hours and figured it out until just before the cool hammer/pull-off-thingy after the first line of text :-( Couldn't you do another one that's just a closup of your left hand, preferably in slo-mo :-)
Inspiring performance. If you would share your tab with me I would be eternally grateful. By the way, I do have a copy of the 1971 Tull Songbook. I never got as good as you but I am still trying.
nice job, i listened/played along and wrote the tab :) excellent tull tune! go good next to "betsy likens" on the 5th in dadgad best wishes mark! thank you
Wow, I thought this might sound weird without the full band backing... but I think doing it this way makes it sound like some ancient folk ballad or something (I mean that in a good way!). Hey Jack, great job!
Jack, sounds fantastic. You gotta help me out though. I'm working on learning this song. Sounds like you're using an alternative tuning. Thanks for the help and great tune!!
Hi, I didn't want to ignore the Martin Barre parts, so I worked hard to blend them into the rhythm... bluegrass style! Thank you for noticing! If I could only remember all the words...
Very very nice. Going in my faves. Loved this song for ages and you nailed it. I can sort of hear the droney string parts from the original song coming through as well!
If Ian ever dies (which I hope is never) you my friend need to play the part in the movie " the life and times of Ian Anderson" " Fish, Sheep and rock and roll"
Absolutely amazing acoustic version of Cold Wind to Valhalla! Wow! This song is no joke! I've been playing almost 20 years and it's definitely a challenge, especially singing on top of it! You rock Mr.Hicko. Well played, sir. Well played.
I might be posting a new video soon called 'How Minstrel in the Gallery' wrecked my life... I've been working on this thing with some other YouTube people since May and my analog home has just made it a nightmare. Notice I have posted nothing since then. It's very sad and frustrating, but I might post "Beggar's Farm" this weekend... thank you for writing.
Sorry to read this. I can see how "Minstrel in the Gallery" could cause great pain if you try it. I've tried it myself. It's got to be one of the most complicated Tull albums in existence.
"Crash Barrier Waltzer" comes to mind indeed. Ouch! Hard to follow and then some.
Thanks for trying though. Not many a brave soul would!
Amazing. I just screwed with my coworker (also a Tull fan) by saying, "Hey, check it out, Ian's on Youtube", and he did a double take. You nail it that well. Awesome!
Seriously, is Ian Anderson aware of you? I know he's not one to share the spotlight, but you should be on tour with Jethro Tull. Either that, or start off on your own. I'd definitely pay to see you perform.
Darn it! Every time I try to reply to someone, I accidentally click "remove" (which is right next to it!). In your comment on ONE WHITE DUCK, you inquired about the tuning, which is standard, with a capo on the fourth fret. All chords ar really common ones, except for the 5th chord in the "fly away Peter" part. Its bass note alternates between G and F (or, C# and B, considering the capo) Sorry I removed your comment and thank you for writing!
Hi, there is a chance of that one! I've played it since the album came out, but I have work to do on the verse part. I guess I could just play the chords, but then everyone jumps all over me. I am most seriously working on JUMP START and HEAVY HORSES. Thank you for writing!
awesome one-man performance! (I was asking myself "when am I gonna see him without the shades" - never thought it would come whence on a quest for Anderson's Valhalla !)
jack you are most inspiring and i'm greatful to have a mentor for Ian andersons unique acoustic style which i have highly enjoyed listening to for decades and continue to o so.Keep playing and teaching tull music. cheers and thanks again
I love Jethro Tull and always want play but it was too difficult to me! Now with you help I can learn you are the best one that plays Jethro Tull that I know! I'm from Brazil, forgive me for any write mistake, bye!
past weekend rowed and drove around mt.lakes and streams with tull tunes. did grace and this fav. tonight on my ovation with your help thanks again always a pleasure.
Actually I know that one very well... but I am reluctant to step on Ian's territory since he still does that one. I try to fill the gap of songs they don't play (same reason I haven't done Thick as a Brick). If I haven't polished up the other two by the end of the month, I probably will do Mother Goose. Thank you for watching and thanks even more for writing!
HaHaHa! You even got some of Ian's facial expressions! Great job man. Are you related to Ian? Long lost twin or something? Seriously I love the guitar playing.
Hi, yes, Paco at the Jethro Tull guitar pages wrote to me after Salamander and suggested I try this, which he said was DADGAD. It's like cheating... once you are tuned, the song plays itself!
You know, I never subscribed to you because your videos are so memorable I type them in fully every time I look for them! Watching yours inspired me to do these!
I should add this is a real gift to those of us who like to cover tull. I'd tried this song before but could not find the right tuning to get the same sound.
Watching you play, it's clear that it's closely related to Salamander and seems to share the same DADGAD tuning.
It's all straight forward after that. Thanks so much!
Yes, this one here is actually a request! I didn't want to do it because of its similarity to Salamander, plus it's really hard to sing. I actually play EVERY Jethro Tull song, but my Whistler sounds goofy without the little fluty fife sound. I'll see what I can do... other pending requests are Moths, A Passion Play, March (the Mad Scientist), and I think somebody wanted Summerday Sands, but lucky for me... Marcello Tull just did one here on YouTube!
Thank you so much for inspiring me to learn this song. You are a great guitarist and a great singer also, your version is just as good as the original!

Wow! How did Ian come up with so many great songs! Beautiful work Jack! My request would be for Rover, then maybe Weathercock.

Great music jack! keep it coming, and if you are considering your fans requests, id like The Whistler, thanks!
