  • Thank you so much for inspiring me to learn this song. You are a great guitarist and a great singer also, your version is just as good as the original!

  • this is seriously some great shit

! i enjoyed it and now i will learn it by myself :D

  • Simply EPIC!! o/

  • lol I thought you were Ian anderson at first, nice job though. Awesome song

  • you rock man! now i got to learn this!

  • I love your work, you are an inspiration. I'll never be able to play like that, but I do like to dream. good job, Ian is proud that his vision is continued.

  • Fantastic cover! I doubt Ian Anderson himself could play this as well nowadays. One of my fave Tull songs.

  • Shame it's a moment out of sync Dude, this is a fabulous cover of the song that truly redeemed 'Minstrel'.

Love the Ian Anderson faces too :o)

  • Who are the two (idiots) who disliked this? Not only is this song a masterpiece, but it was executed brilliantly!

  • ....absolutely fantastic.

  • nice one. I like the" take 5"; I rarely get it on the first take either!!

  • GREAT cover Jack! By the way, I even think you look like Ian Anderson!

  • This is awesome... thanks.

  • Nice cover Jack!

  • execellent

  • fantastic jack.love this song.any chance of you playing it slowed down like you did with salamander. i cant quite get this.

    cheers.

  • Nice! This inspires me. You actually remind me of Ian in a lot of ways.

  • Jack...Ive enjoyed your videos for about 2 -3 yrs now. I gotta admit...you wail! You totally make the youtube experience for me. Thank s for sharing!

  • you play a mean guitar. You are excellent!

  • You are outstanding. Wow. You play a mean guitar. Thank you.

  • great job, comrade!

Just wonder if I could ever pick up this song.:)

  • that's outstanding!... just teaching myself some tull tunes now and your many vids will be my guide!... thanks for rocking the tull so hard!

  • I've found this song tonight and there's just no chance of getting it out of my mind... I'd have a great request: could you possibly tab it and send it to me? My hearing of music may not be that bad when it comes to getting into the mood but figuring out notes is not my best side...

  • wow

  • Dude you fuckin rock...that is all there is to it.

  • You're fu..ing awesome. I love your version!

  • You're fucking awesome!!!!

  • You are fucking awesome!!!!

  • Very, very good. Is that in a different tuning, or has the capo altered the sound that much? Either way, kudos.

  • @nmdodge Same tuning as Salamander, DADGAD and capo on 4th fret. Thank you for writing!

  • @marksecunda How did you learn this song on guitar? I can't find tabs or lessons and without those I'm screwed...

  • This is another brilliant performance Jack. This obviously shares a few things with Salamander so, maybe if I can get somewhere with that, I may have a crack at this too. Watching you play just inspires me to do more. The bit at 2:56 where it builds up and then hits the full power with the lower strings gave me goosebumps! Great stuff.

  • @mussie302 Once you sort of get Salamander, this just magically falls into place and is MUCH easier, except maybe the "bluegrass Martin Barre" part!

  • Did you know my friends and SIU alum Rich Whitley who co-wrote Rock and Roll High School or Steve Hammel who worked for Dick Orken (Chicken Man)'s Radio Ranch in LA and FOX TV's radio ad branch in LA? Steve cast v/o talent in LA.

  • I think you lived on Elm the summer of 75. I lived in Mae Smith that summer. Then I moved to the Quads, then to Lewis Park, then to the corner of College and University, then to Freeman St. and eventually to Makanda. But the clincher is fall 74-75 I lived on the first floor of Baldwin Hall. I really don't think you'll remember me. Does the name Mona or Ramona ring a bell?

  • I am not Mona but I thought you might remember her. I have no memory of you living at the Quads. Some of the people I knew who lived there were David Schuster, Dave Horowitz, Barry Cohn, Mark Becker, Gary Pinsel, Mark Plotski, Neil Schlotski, a dealer named Hollywood, Jodi Herron, Debbie Kyler, Nancy Stockton and my roommate Mona.

  • Unlike you, I remember very little about my life, and especially the 70's which are very hazy to me, but I believe the Elm Street house was green. Maybe it wasn't even Elm St. I Lived in the Quads, however 75 - 76 and would like to see the video....where's this other channel? J. Annanances

  • Found it -- I think. Marc Eskenazi did part of it?

  • @annanances Wow... I just came back here to guess Bob or Lauren, but since Lauren was Beth's friend, she would not have used Marc's last name. Marc and I took a course "Feature Film Workshop" and made a feature over the summer of 1976. However, the "Quads" portion was shot by my roommate Jim Moy. I didn't know many people at the Quads, although I lived there at the exact same time! I like that you really are Johnny Annanances. I actually post my videos to elicit mysterious visitors like you.

  • Dan, you sounds as good as you did when I listened to you play on Elm Street in Carbondale...maybe even better. You probably won't remember me.

  • good!! very very good!

  • amazing mate...you captured a soul of this song on the acoustic guitar...congrats...

  • OK,for several years you were the cool dude who covered "Janine".Went to hear iggy tonight and you even cover '5 ft 1",now we are onto Tull.............Will you come to my party.................go on tell me you do zoo music gal too!!!............Love your chameleon voice!!!Meg

  • @reecegeorge Hi, yes, parties are pretty much the only place I ever get to play! You just have to get me there!

  • Hi Mark, thats great guitar on that. Any chance of tab or something?

  • has Ian Anderson commented on that. I was very impressed.. especially at the start. Your guitar was superb I noticed the electric sound you imitated and you spaced the notes out superbly.. I really like the high riff which had that tull spooky and ethereal quality and the singing good though I could see your slight difference from the original in rhythm made pronounciation difficult sometimes. Do you perform to an audience? what are your other favourite music stuff?

  • WOW

  • wow, great playing. You even look a bit like Ian :)

  • shit, i wanna play like this!

  • Me, too! I've never been able to reproduce it...

  • Excellent work dude! This is one of my fave Tull songs, but unfortunately one of many that I can't find a tab for :-( So I'm totally with those guys below me and would sure like a tab for this. So far, I've been gonig at it for three hours and figured it out until just before the cool hammer/pull-off-thingy after the first line of text :-( Couldn't you do another one that's just a closup of your left hand, preferably in slo-mo :-)

  • very well done jack!!! i'm jelous. LOL

  • excellant, where can I get the tabs,I have most of the song but there are a few parts I'm not to sure about

  • Inspiring performance. If you would share your tab with me I would be eternally grateful. By the way, I do have a copy of the 1971 Tull Songbook. I never got as good as you but I am still trying.

  • Perfectly Done!!!

  • cool!

  • ...magic¡¡ magic¡¡'', Great and thank's x posting.

  • nice job, i listened/played along and wrote the tab :) excellent tull tune! go good next to "betsy likens" on the 5th in dadgad best wishes mark! thank you

  • you wrote the tab out? is there any way i could get a copy? i cant seem to work this song out at all...

  • awesome i have the this album you do it so good

    your the man

  • I wish I could play like this!! o__o

    How nice!!

  • You even nail IA's facial expressions! Awesome!

  • Cover Strepitosaaaa!!!

  • jack, i sit here eaten up with envy. ****er! LOL excellent! well dne.

  • Awesome work, I know that it is a hard song to do! You did a good job on it in my opinion. Keep up the good work!

  • Very nice energy in this song Jack! Perfect as usual!

    5*

  • Wow, I thought this might sound weird without the full band backing... but I think doing it this way makes it sound like some ancient folk ballad or something (I mean that in a good way!). Hey Jack, great job!

  • Tabs please? Anyone?

  • I like it. You even pull off some of Ian's facial expressions.

  • Jack, sounds fantastic. You gotta help me out though. I'm working on learning this song. Sounds like you're using an alternative tuning. Thanks for the help and great tune!!

  • Hi, it's DADGAD, just like Salamander except capo 4th fret instead of 3rd. Thank you for watching.

  • Awsome playing! Thanks for the lesson. You even look like the Ian. (my 1st boy is named after him) Nice job, will check out the rest of your vids.

    Thanks

  • Great man! it sounds exactly as Barre, u r a talent! wish i could perform as u do ! :o) congrats!!

  • Hi, I didn't want to ignore the Martin Barre parts, so I worked hard to blend them into the rhythm... bluegrass style! Thank you for noticing! If I could only remember all the words...

  • Great job Love it, thanks

  • Very very nice. Going in my faves. Loved this song for ages and you nailed it. I can sort of hear the droney string parts from the original song coming through as well!

  • I hear them in my head when I play it, also! Thank you very much for your comment!

  • Man I think your off the hook!

I just syarted to pick up a guitar like 2 days ago some day I hope to tear one in half like that

  • Whoa! terring it up

  • GREAT!!!

    I´m your fan!

  • Hey, amazing performance...

I am very surprised by how well you play this beautiful song.

  • If Ian ever dies (which I hope is never) you my friend need to play the part in the movie " the life and times of Ian Anderson" " Fish, Sheep and rock and roll"

    I love all your videos...

  • you're an inspiring guy Jack......got me trying to play this tune, one of my favs.

  • PHENOMINAL! This is not easy stuff!

  • You're amazing, man! Great work!

  • if you like Jethro Tull plz join my JT fan group just go to my profile then click groups and join JT fan group. plz post your videos

  • WOw man I loved that. Never expected you would perform this this good. chapeau!!!

  • Absolutely amazing acoustic version of Cold Wind to Valhalla! Wow! This song is no joke! I've been playing almost 20 years and it's definitely a challenge, especially singing on top of it! You rock Mr.Hicko. Well played, sir. Well played.

  • Very Well Done..

  • Yes, yes 9000 or 11. Small difference. Heh! and hoorah!

  • I might be posting a new video soon called 'How Minstrel in the Gallery' wrecked my life... I've been working on this thing with some other YouTube people since May and my analog home has just made it a nightmare. Notice I have posted nothing since then. It's very sad and frustrating, but I might post "Beggar's Farm" this weekend... thank you for writing.

  • Sorry to read this. I can see how "Minstrel in the Gallery" could cause great pain if you try it. I've tried it myself. It's got to be one of the most complicated Tull albums in existence.

"Crash Barrier Waltzer" comes to mind indeed. Ouch! Hard to follow and then some.

Thanks for trying though. Not many a brave soul would!

And yes, "Beggar's Farm" would be outstanding.

I would love to hear your rendition.

    Always a fan,

    crazytalk11

  • You are awesome of course, but I do have a small request. Could you play "A New Day Yesterday"?

It would mean much to me, and I know you can do it (no pressure!)

    Thanks!

    One of your fans,

    Crazytalk9000

  • Wasn't able to learn the song until I saw this. Who needs professional instructional videos when you can learn from this?

  • Amazing. I just screwed with my coworker (also a Tull fan) by saying, "Hey, check it out, Ian's on Youtube", and he did a double take. You nail it that well. Awesome!

  • Seriously, is Ian Anderson aware of you? I know he's not one to share the spotlight, but you should be on tour with Jethro Tull. Either that, or start off on your own. I'd definitely pay to see you perform.

Your work is outstanding to say the very least.

  • Darn it! Every time I try to reply to someone, I accidentally click "remove" (which is right next to it!). In your comment on ONE WHITE DUCK, you inquired about the tuning, which is standard, with a capo on the fourth fret. All chords ar really common ones, except for the 5th chord in the "fly away Peter" part. Its bass note alternates between G and F (or, C# and B, considering the capo) Sorry I removed your comment and thank you for writing!

  • wow!!!!!!! keep it up jack, when is sossity coming?

  • Hi, there is a chance of that one! I've played it since the album came out, but I have work to do on the verse part. I guess I could just play the chords, but then everyone jumps all over me. I am most seriously working on JUMP START and HEAVY HORSES. Thank you for writing!

  • Hey mark, do you do WOndring Aloud?

  • awesome one-man performance! (I was asking myself "when am I gonna see him without the shades" - never thought it would come whence on a quest for Anderson's Valhalla !)

  • Great rendition! I love this song

It sounds like your playing Ian and Martin's parts at the same time. Very cool

  • You play a noble song nobly well. Cheers.

  • Great performance brother! ;-) hail to you

  • valhall~~AAAAA!!

    Close!

  • ok i figured it out until 0:28 and i´ll figure out the rest for 20-30 years now :D see you in the future

  • BUT IS this Standard Tuning???????

  • DADGAD, identical to Salamander.

  • jack you are most inspiring and i'm greatful to have a mentor for Ian andersons unique acoustic style which i have highly enjoyed listening to for decades and continue to o so.Keep playing and teaching tull music. cheers and thanks again

  • I love Jethro Tull and always want play but it was too difficult to me! Now with you help I can learn you are the best one that plays Jethro Tull that I know! I'm from Brazil, forgive me for any write mistake, bye!

  • past weekend rowed and drove around mt.lakes and streams with tull tunes. did grace and this fav. tonight on my ovation with your help thanks again always a pleasure.

  • you give me goosebumps..only the best can do that. Great work

  • sometimes your playing scares me...makes me think you've locked ian down in your basement or something.

  • ...or maybe Mother Goose?

  • Actually I know that one very well... but I am reluctant to step on Ian's territory since he still does that one. I try to fill the gap of songs they don't play (same reason I haven't done Thick as a Brick). If I haven't polished up the other two by the end of the month, I probably will do Mother Goose. Thank you for watching and thanks even more for writing!

  • KICK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wish I could here your vocals more because this is a stunning performance of a great song...How about and acoustic version of Heavy Horses?

  • Uh-oh, then you'd hear all the lines I forgot! Strangely enough, I had picked either Heavy Horses or Jump Start as my next JT cover!

  • HaHaHa! You even got some of Ian's facial expressions! Great job man. Are you related to Ian? Long lost twin or something? Seriously I love the guitar playing.

  • i know i commented on this a week ago but it's still awesome! You play and sing with real attitude. I love the scary Ian Andersony

'who you looking at?' glare at 02:28!

  • This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. I have been enjoying it for over 20 years now... And this is superb.

  • great stuff! Instantly favourited! Are you in DADGAD? I play this song in drop D but it's very similar to Salamander which is DADGAD.

  • Hi, yes, Paco at the Jethro Tull guitar pages wrote to me after Salamander and suggested I try this, which he said was DADGAD. It's like cheating... once you are tuned, the song plays itself!

  • You did a really good job on this. Superb!

  • Do you have a guitar tab for this? i'd love one.

  • I learned this one by watching the hands on the video. No need for a tab with this incredible version.

  • Came on looking for some Tull because I'm going to see them on Wednesday. Your vids have really put me in the mood for it. Great playing, thanks.

  • Best JT guitar coverer I've seen

  • Thank you for watching and also for writing!

  • Oh HELL yes! Thanks man...

  • i knew i'd find this if i kept looking. thanks for your amazing videos!

  • You know, I never subscribed to you because your videos are so memorable I type them in fully every time I look for them! Watching yours inspired me to do these!

  • Really great! Thank you from a Tull fan of many years. Guess we're not getting short on heroes...

  • This goes into the subtle comment Hall of Fame! Excellent!

  • Awesome!

  • Bravo.... Truly an excellent rendition.... Cheers...

  • You are truly a minstrel Jack. Absolutely stunning performance. Bravo!

  • Really incredible version. You've got it going on.

  • I should add this is a real gift to those of us who like to cover tull. I'd tried this song before but could not find the right tuning to get the same sound.

Watching you play, it's clear that it's closely related to Salamander and seems to share the same DADGAD tuning.

It's all straight forward after that. Thanks so much!

  • Hey Mark.

    You remembered my request.

    NICE GUITAR WORK.

Did you ever here Ian's live BBC version of this song from 1975? You did as well as he did.

TOUGH SONG TO SING AND PLAY.

  • Hope you'll tour here in montreal :)

  • man.... you made me cry twice today

    with that song and Salamander....

    I wanna be you when i'm 50

    You already have a fan!

  • Wow! How did Ian come up with so many great songs! Beautiful work Jack! My request would be for Rover, then maybe Weathercock.

  • wow! i wish my fingers were that fast, great stuff.

  • Very good rendition of a difficult tune! Great Job!

    LC

  • Well, I can play the whistle if you need :)

  • wow! just love it, great job!

  • Great music jack! keep it coming, and if you are considering your fans requests, id like The Whistler, thanks!

  • Yes, this one here is actually a request! I didn't want to do it because of its similarity to Salamander, plus it's really hard to sing. I actually play EVERY Jethro Tull song, but my Whistler sounds goofy without the little fluty fife sound. I'll see what I can do... other pending requests are Moths, A Passion Play, March (the Mad Scientist), and I think somebody wanted Summerday Sands, but lucky for me... Marcello Tull just did one here on YouTube!
