  • The horse broke both front ankles... Just like Eight belles but I think she actually broke her legs. But it's close.

  • @TheNotSoEmoHunters This horse didn't break anything and Eight Belles broke her ankle(s), not her legs...but hey, let's all perpetuate nonsense because that seems to be what most of the people commenting on this video are best at!

  • Did anyone with any knowledge analyze the incident? It almost looks as if the horse is attempting a jump. Could he have been daydreaming that he was approaching the next jump? Could he have seen something in front of him that spooked him? It doesn't look like an ordinary stumble. Very strange.

  • you can see that the horse cant put weight on the leg. its broken, og uí hate galopp

  • @JuliaStuxberg his leg is not broken, he likely didn't continue because he was distracted. Wikipedia says "Jockey Dick Francis later stated that a loud cheer from the crowd, for an expected Royal winner, distracting the horse is a more likely explanation." The horse was put down in 1963.

  • I remember this, was Dick Francis riding?

  • @AnimalLeftist Dick Francis is riding.

  • @ridingxruffian, whew, at least one functioning memory cell! Thanks:)

  • Gary Neville sent me here.

  • @KingOfPing1 haha me too!

  • Can't you see that he broke his ankle? Thats why he jumped like that. It was to get off of the leg from so much pain.

  • @theAPHArider He was uninjured.

  • @ridingxruffian umm yes he was...watch his front left leg from 0:08-0:10

    His leg is boviously broken.

  • @theAPHArider Do I have to spell it out? H-e w-a-s u-n-i-n-j-u-r-e-d.

  • @ridingxruffian ok whatever.....you obviously can't see it

  • @theAPHArider Are you just wholly incapable of using a search engine or...?

  • @ridingxruffian wow i cant believe u dont think he broke his leg because my 18 yearold brother works competition horses and so do i

  • @reptilemaster100 I don't think~ he didn't break his leg. I know~ he didn't break his leg. Also, being eighteen years old doesn't make you an expert; it actually makes you little more than a kid. <3

  • @ridingxruffian ik but he works with the same kind of horses and he worked with something like this before

  • @reptilemaster100 He's also very incorrect if he's still saying this horse broke anything more than the hearts of those who bet on him.

  • @reptilemaster100 LOL, your eighteen-year-old kid brother does not~ work with this kind of horse--these are the most elite in all of England.

  • @inspiratae he does i think i would know wat kind of horses he works with

  • @reptilemaster100 Prove it.

  • @inspiratae how do u ant me to prove it

  • @reptilemaster100 I'm not going to make you embarrass yourself trying, love.

  • @reptilemaster100 your and idiot

  • @dearnapst i know horses the leg is broken

  • @reptilemaster100 your still a moron, Devon Loch (1946–1963) was a famous racehorse that is probably best remembered for its involvement in the 1956 Grand National steeplechase, when owned by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

  • @dearnapst The leg is broken

  • @reptilemaster100 you complete stupidity and stubborness, say it all, wouldn't let you near any horse of mine

  • @dearnapst i know about horses the leg is broken that same thing just happen to my friends mom has she was training it

  • @reptilemaster100 right that makes you both a vet and a doctor

  • @reptilemaster100 This horse did not break anything~.

  • @reptilemaster100 This horse did not break anything~.

  • @reptilemaster100 This horse did not break anything~ and if you think that your child of a brother is a valid resource, I am scared for the future of veterinary medicine.

  • Hahaa, this was John Terry today!

  • @kernow31426955

Yes I know horses aren't stupid but the stupidity was the horse thought the jump to the left was also in front...proof is in the video..really would be stupid to look for another reason coz there isn't one!!..

  • Probably he was trying to jump an ideal obstacle (maybe he thinks about an obstacle of the white pole[?] {because horses can watch only laterally, so close in front}) because his ears (if you watch) shot foward (like every thoroughbred before an obstacle jump). But when he jumped, his behind legs slipped on the track and he broke down.

    (sorry my english, I'm Italian)

  • *insert LeBron James joke here*

  • Yes came to this thanx to inside natures giants..lol ...but no mystery at all otherwise the water jump wouldn't hav been directly to the horses left...I'm sorry but it doesn't take sherlock holmes to work this out..no exhaustion..no heart attack....just plain old stupidity on horses part..lol...

  • @duster15670 Err horses aren't stupid and would never intentionally harm themselves. How do you think they train show jumping horses? They think it hurts to hit the poll but the moment they learn it doesn't they don't work as hard. They're clever and to make a good horse you have to trick them.

  • @kernow31426955

Obvious again as the water was lower to the left so judgement was all out and legs would hav come back down in its mind to make the jump!!

  • Are we all here because of " inside natures giants" XD lol

  • Maybe he did slip but it almost looks like when he did put his hind legs in for a jump he let them collapse. maybe from exhaustion, maybe he done it on purpose. Maybe he did hallucinate and jump, we won't know why he did it. it could have been intentional. I ride horses a fair bit and even the good ones have weird sparky moments, though that one is a little insane I'll admit. Hmm...

  • So obvious he saw water jump to left of himself as he came down the course and jumped seeing that and not in front of him..why are there theorys to what happened when its so obvious??!!!!??!

  • @duster15670 Well if that's true why didn't he make the jump?

  • Is it Phar lap or ...

  • @zuza452 This horse is named Devon Loch and was owned by the queen.

  • the horse most likely saw a shadow or somthing and he spooked and he tried to jump it and failed horses do this more than you think

  • I've seen this before. The jockey said the horse attempted to jump a shadow.

  • it's so sad :(

  • It looks like the horse broke his left front foot, but apparently he went on to live a few more years afterwards.

  • hahaahaha thats funny. "I beleive i can slide!"

  • @ponypnyponypower Ha ha ha Can I hit You on You're head!!! It isn't funny it's soooo sad he can broke legs

  • @zuza452 \it was a joke, geese, people take things way to serious. I love horses and it makes me sad if he broke his legs, i didnt know that, not need to get all mad, im sorry, i promise i wasnt trying to me mean, hheh, i have been riding forever and i dont find it funny either about that, and that wasnt even me, that was my friend on my account.... :3

  • @ponypnyponypower sory I suffered

  • @zuza452

    its ok....

  • @ponypnyponypower This horse did not break anything~.

  • @inspiratae

    I know

  • @inspiratae At first i thought he did because when the horse stood up it looked like his front hooves were sideways. I think i need to get my eyes checked.

  • @zuza452 This horse did not break anything~.

  • @zuza452

I love horses. As i said, It was my friend. I'm Sorry.

  • wait, who is this horse? that fall looks painful... shame on us people who somehow cause this wether we know it or not. it all starts in breeding...

  • @ZenyattaLuvr Um, it had nothing to do with people and if you actually read, it's obviously Devon Loch.

  • @ridingxruffian well im sorry but i wasnt sure is the horses name was that, national fall, or nara. im sorry that i didnt take the time to google it before commenting.

  • @daisydooker yes it would be.

  • Why the Hell are there so many Man U fans commenting on a vid about racing

  • Did anyone know, SAF's Dad backed this, LOL jk, you all know.... LONG LIVE SIR ALEX.

  • I like the fact nobody has picked me up on the fact I spelt Ferguson wrong.

  • Huh?! I wonder out of 119,000 view, how many came here because of Sir Alex's interview... lol.

  • Glory glory Man United. Thanks SAF, this is the funniest thing i have seen

  • @RUTHLESSS0ULJA not so funny if you were connected to the horse

  • LOL...same as you lads below...UNITED!!!!

  • SAF makes this horse porpular today ...hahahahaha ....am here cos of him.......I love United ...we won in style ..good to peck money bag off champions league and PL hahahah

  • Haha me too mate!

  • Me too! We're gonna win the league! Watch out Barca! Champions of ENGLAND!!! Champions of EUROPE!!! (Hope the horse is ok! lol)

  • Me too

  • So this is what Sir Alex Ferguson was talking about! =)

  • As am I.

  • I'm here because of Alex Fergason's post-match interview.

  • @imjackcooper Same haha

  • @imjackcooper yep, me too

  • @imjackcooper me too

  • @imjackcooper

    me too

  • @imjackcooper how did this comment get 40 likes in 3 hours? this is why youtube wll always be a mystery- i don't care how good/not good a comment like this is, 40 people have not given it a thumbs up in 3 hours. completely and utterly false, and youtube can't get its rating system decided.

  • @wfcyellow because in a title deciding game of football in england the winning manager said 'dont even mention devon loch' obviously a reference for people in his generation, many, like myself didnt have a clue what he was on about so i googled it and this is the first thing that came up. hence the 40 likes.

  • @wfcyellow as apomerenke said, at the end of a match watched by many many millions of people globally one of the most famous people involved mentioned not doing a 'devon loch' myself and countless others have never heard of this incident as it happend looong before i was born so we turn to google to find out whats happening and that leads us here :)

  • @wfcyellow Only the most important game of Manchester Uniteds season so far, being said in the post match interview was the name Devon Loch, Many fans searched it and found this clip... over 300million united fans, i'd say 40 likes is nothing.

  • poor horse i wish i could have helped

  • It really looks like at :08 his left front pastern is broken. That could just be him trying to scramble to regain his footing though.

  • @hanoverianjumpers101 that's his foot...

  • @smallbutlarge Yes, I'm not stupid, but it looked like it was turned the wrong way.

  • I've little to no interest in horse racing, but could it be that the horse just slipped on its hindlegs? It does look like its going to jump though raising its legs up high & there is some form of ditch visible on the non-track meters from where it falls.

Have they ever come to any definitive conclusion of why the horse went down?

  • @TheTvrulesthenation The best guess is that he saw the jump in the infield and hallucinated.

  • it is amazing the horse didnt snap it's back legs looking at the way it landed, and how the jockey stayed mounted I do not know, I have often wondered why the horse jumped the invisible fence, was it because he saw something in his peripheral vision or wasit the jockeys error?

  • @MistaFozz The jockey always said he thought the horse got distracted by the cheers of the crowd.

It would have been a Royal winner, and they're always extra popular. (Devon Loch was owned by the Queen Mother)

  • the horse was showboating for the crowd, having thought he had already won. he was doing a little celebratory jig

  • llooook at his hoof at 0:09 it loks like its bent back as in the sesamoids broke or something?

  • This is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.

  • What a strange incident, amazing that he came out of it alright though.

  • looks like it saw the ditch out of the corner of its eye, and tried to jump it?

  • I was 9 years old and this was the only Grand National I went to. I was on the rails across from where Devon Loch fell. I remember the crowd cheering and the silence when it happened. My dad said the horse was spooked by the roar of the crowd or he thought he was jumping another fence. I will never forget it. I remember the horse walking fine after with no apparent injuries.

  • Perhaps he saw his shadow and tried to jump over it?

  • He sees the white post late

  • @imatroll5 Sorry to ya'll i was in a bad mood that day. But I will tell you that when ruffian had her fall, she did infact get right back up.

  • @laurenandmrmax Ruffian never fell on the racetrack...that was Go For Wand in the Distaff, when she was running with Bayakoa in the homestretch.

  • @laurenandmrmax

Ruffian never went down in the first place, though. She broke her leg while running and stayed up.

  • You wanna tell me that that horse was not injured? You're an idiot! When that horse gets up his legs bends backwards... it broke its leg!

  • @laurenandmrmax Yes, I do in fact want to tell you the horse was uninjured because I, unlike you, can do research. The only injury this horse suffered was a pulled muscle. Horses bend their legs all the time. There is a famous photograph of Rags To RIches stumbling out of the starting gate at the Belmont Stakes and I personally, riding cross country (I event) see it happen when horses trip landing after a drop fence.

  • @laurenandmrmax You obviously don't know anything about horse anatomy. If something was broken, he wouldn't have gotten up so quickly or at all.

  • @imatroll5 Unfortunately, that isn't always true...Go For Wand's graphic breakdown may be the most famous example.

  • @imatroll5

Youtube search Go For Wand, 1990 Breeder's Cup Distaff. Her leg was shattered and she popped right back up to try finishing the race.

  • FYI, that's mystery writer Dick Francis on that horse. He was a jockey first...

  • why did he leap up like that there was nothing there its like some one shot him

  • I wonder if the horse thought that short fence sticking out perpendicular into the infield was another jump to clear and did a half hearted leap? Maybe saw it in his peripheral vision.

Or maybe a brain fart perhaps?

  • I'm shocked that the horse didn't totally destroy his stifles in that fall! Never seen anything quite like that before.

  • Erm uninjured is technically incorrect as it did sprain muscles and by the way he moves after probably gave himself a nasty graze on his pasterns. However, it is quite clear that he didn't suffer anything as serious as ligament damage or broken bones as he puts weight on all limbs and doesn't appear majorly lame. I'd be more concerned as to the cause in case it reoccurred.

  • The horse was completely fine, everyone! Anyone who is saying otherwise can just sit there in their wrongness and be wrong if they're too lazy to type a name into Google. (:

  • what is this !?

  • @aaoluniaaa Devon Loch falling in the Grand National....

  • It says he just collapsed, he wasn't euthenized until 1963

  • If an American horse today fell like that, it would be shattered.

  • i was just sayin ffs :| because look at its front legs when it gets up its technically getting up on its pasterns :| look !

  • Talk about Bambi on ice. Never seen a horses legs spread like that. Poor guy.

  • am just sayin ffs :| its just abnormal when it gets up and its practically standing up on the front of its pasterns ae? and am naw dim i know what am talking about tooo

  • how was it un injured ? watch its front legs when it gets up

  • @missshannonwilson08 How are you so dim? Look up the horse if you can't wrap your head around the idea that I know what I'm talking about.

  • Whoaaa

  • I didn't know horses' legs could flatten out like that. I can't imagine what that would do to an American Thoroughbred today. Brilliant jockey...eh, but I guess the fall was the Decider in the winner of the race ;)

  • NEIL SWAN falls at the last. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  • OMG!!!!!!!! Poor horse!! She breaks her right leg!!

  • @AgEjEE She is a he. He was perfectly fine.

  • @ridingxruffian ohh, sorry! :D But look at the last seconds of the vid.. He can't stay normal.. and he relief his right leg!! If the Horse doesn't injure, the jockey dosen't go down of him!!?? And he goes..

  • God bless Dick Francis, jockey of Devon Loch, who passed in Feb. 2010 and whose memorial service was yesterday in Trafalgar Square. Mr. Francis became an internationally known mystery writer whose novels revolved around the horse racing world.

  • @Rimfaxe96 I think this is the part where you shut up, calling me the idiot when you apparently can't even use a search engine.

  • @ridingxruffian What is with you? Sorry but at the moment I really don´t know what you mean. When did I call you idiot? -.-* Please show me the comment.

Shut up for yourself and if you must know it, YES I can use a search engine, I use(d) it always if I search something. And sometimes I find rude people or some guys who don´t know what they are saying, you for example.-.-

  • @Rimfaxe96 @ridingxruffian Sorry; the 'idiot' bit was referring to IRide4TheBlue. Actually, I'm not particularly sorry because you really need to use that fine tool the search engine and look up Devon Loch.

  • @ridingxruffian I always use the search engine. I don´t have the time to search throguh youtube just to find a good music or horse or whatever video. ;)

  • Its obvious the horse broke its front leg. Unless its legs are made out of rubber I doubt he was "uninjured". idiot!

  • @IRide4TheBlue I think this is the part where you shut up, calling me the idiot when you apparently can't even use a search engine.

  • how can you say the horse was uninjured? Were you there? Because at :09 it is evident the horse broke his left front leg as he cannot stand on it and its being flailed around. So unless you were there, I'm left leaving this video knowing that no, the horse was NOT okay.

  • @cartierluvv213 It's the Grand National--thousands and thousands were there, the horse was a few hundred feet from the finish line and in the lead, and every single person watched him fall and get off the track totally fine. He raced again and won again, too--don't be lazy; look up Devon Loch. It was a huge fiasco.

And I had such respect for you, too.

  • it looked like that horse injured its front left nearside leg??

  • @ThatVaultingChickx I think this is the part where you shut up, calling me the idiot when you apparently can't even use a search engine.

  • bizarre

  • I hope that was the last race of the horse. There were something with its legs...*criticalview*

  • @Rimfaxe96 He was fine and ran again.

  • Why did you do that? Poor horse...

  • lol stupid midget on his back told him he ate all da sugar cubes lol

  • ha ha my grandad was watchin this at the time with his brother in law, when Devon Loch did the splits Uncle Ted said quite seriously, 'ah the poor Queen Mum',2 which my grandad replied in typical scouse fashion..'f*** the Queen Mum,my moneys on ESB!'!

  • this was shown on todays grand national

  • Nope.

  • poor horse. i heard it was becuase he put his ears forward- it hit him like hed just run into a brick wall. if you watch his ears...

  • ...how does flicking ears give a horse a spasm?

  • haha it looks like he is about to fly den BAM he failed and went splat. love it how he is all good tho

  • That's crazy (in a good way)!! It goes to show how tough a horse can be! Must have been a spook to the jockey though.

  • That's an excellent piece of observation by RidingxRuffian. His back hoof does seem to clip the front one, after he takes a slightly longer stride than usual. That would explain why the horse seemed to go down of his own accord. He actually won two races after this.

  • seriously good thriller writer, dick francis. RIP

  • that is unreal

  • Dick Francis was a great character,he will be missed

  • Devon Loch pulled muscles in his hind quarters quite badly but was fine after some TLC.

  • RIP Dick Francis

  • I'm really upset--riding and writing are my two favorite things and he was a master of both.

  • Goes to show how strong the thoroughbred breed used to be... coming out of a fall like that with no injuries... if any thoroughbred from our time had a fall like that, it would most likely break a leg or something...
