i own a copy of this video "influence" if im not mistaking, for many many moons it was n old habit of my spirit to smoke buds and replay this song over n over n over, every morning for many many moons. those mornings were some of my favorites, Maestro szabo will forever live in my spirit^
BRAVO ! SUNWUTZU BRAVO ! ! THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHAREING THE SORCERER-of-SUCH-STIMULATING-SOUND AND MASTER-MUSICIAN MR. GABOR SZABO, WITH THE COMMUNICATION-COMMUNITY YOUTUBE. ENCORE ! ENCORE ! ! I HUMBLY-BOW SIR. REGARDS FROM CANADA.
Nice 'N mellow. I believe the that's Bobby Lyle on keys, the man on the drums, probably Bruce Carter. I can't place the others. The best album from Gabor was "Faces" in my opinion, but I generally liked his style overall.
Szabos greatest album for me was El Chico, with Chico Hamilton on drums, Sadao Watanabe on flute, Willie Bobo on percussion...an amazing voyage of an album!
To hear Szabo in a different context, listen to Chico Hamilton's Passing Thru and Man from Two Worlds with Charles Lloyd .... Lloyd and Szabo sound GREAT together.
I owned this album along with "Faces", which was not well received by the critics. I enjoyed "Gloomy Day", "Alicia", and "Magic Mystic Faces" off the "Faces" album. Bobby Lyle was magical in "Gloomy Day".
This performance of "Concorde (Nightflight)" was recorded for the "Club Date" TV show ( KPBS - San Diego, CA) on April 23, 1977. Gabor is seen with Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Marlon McClain on electric guitar, Nathaniel Phillips on bass and Bruce Carter on drums. All three songs are featured on the Carlos Santana video/DVD called "Influences".
Subscript: To clarify the "three songs" reference above, this song comes from the same performance that yielded other clips found on YouTube, "Breezin" and "Concerto
This below is just an answer for the post sent by arcface: "Thank you for the videos, he was alegend unfortunatelly in his homeland Hungary almost nobody knows who was he..."
Yeah...this the rhythm section from funk giants, PLEASURE (of "Glide" fame): Bruce Careter on drums; looks like Nate Phillips on bass; Marlon McClain on guitar; and I'm assuming that's Donald Hepburn on keys.
Gabor was A HUGE Influence on Carlos ! ...And way back when , his drummer used to be Jim Keltner, who later went on to be in the Traveling Wilburys With Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty ,and Jeff Lynn ! It is too bad about Gabor that the needle ended up possessing him, because he was a real talent !
He escaped Hungary in '56 after the anti-communist revolution, so he was a "persona non grata" for the socialist regime. But some of his music is very well know by every grown up hungarian. Those were the soundtracks of the tv show called "Képújság" which was aired two or three times a day in the eightees.
This is Gabor Szabo's "Concorde (Nightflight)", recorded for the Club Date TV program in 1977 and included as part of Carlos Santana's video "Influences".
Youtube? Pfffff. More like FallopianTube. I just got pregnant.

Gabor's playing always touches my heartstrings...he was a visionary. I remember purchasing the LP "Rambler" way back in 1972.(or thereabouts)

The keyboardist looks like it might be George Duke.
bethellodge 4 years ago
Definitely, not heavy enough to be George Duke. I was thinking it was Donald Hepburn, but it MIGHT be Bobby Lyle.
