I like Russia, but I highly disagree with it's policies with Chechnya. Western media calls it "the first Chechen War" but it wasn't a war, it was a massacre. The first massacre of Chechnya was largely political, Boris Yeltsin who was pro-democratic bombed his own parliament a year before, and his own people were questioning why somebody who was pro-democratic would hold a stand off and kill members of parliament. His popularity declined, and a year later, he massacred Chechens to gain it back.

Mosques in the Caucuses in Batumi for example are very Turkish because of the Ottomans. The Mosque in Yerevan is very Persian probably because of the Iranian/Shia influence. One of the most beautiful is in North Ossetia in the capital city there by the river.

Not sure if it was predominantly Muslim but it certainly had a significant Muslim population and ironically more Armenians lived in today's S E Turkey and Muslims in modern Armenia.
Most of the Muslims who once lived in modern day Armenia were Azeri or Kurdish. There are also Kurdish Yazidis in most Caucuses countries.
