I like learning the tones with just "ma" its crazy, like, it could mean horse, to scold, hemp, mother, it all depends on how you pronounce it. And I thought "beautiful" was Mei in Chinese... as in Mei guo... beautiful country... AKA America. Or was that just a lie my lao shi told me?

nope not a lie. the character used in meiguo means beautiful..i'm in chinese 3 i would kno.lol

one pronounce can be several words and one word can have at most 5 accents.

horse马, to scold骂, hemp麻, mother妈 are different words.

mei guo美国 is just America, dosen't mean beautiful country. then how about Russia( e guo俄国 ), hungry country ?

A good Mandarin to English or vice-versa dictionary will show you there are more than one expressions for beauty. The position that your lao shi "lied" is too harsh. Pretty, beautiful, cute, good looking can be used interchangably. Chinese alos has words that are similar in meaning, "hao kan" or "good looking" can also be used for saying a girl is "pretty" or "beautiful". Have fun with your Mandarin lessons. Zaijian!
