  • I like this Tina Turner Ruby Leuage Promo.

  • those were the days

  • WINFIELD CUP, SIMPLY THE BEST!

  • I had to share your video on my facebook jmoul59 because it means alot to me, I was there back in them days and I could have been. I was a could have been but I developed knowledge from both codes, from VFL and ARL as they were called when I was a junior. Years on I still love both games and will always appreciate the toughness of both sports. It's all about the sportsmanship and creativity and Tina Turner just made the football experience so much better for the game. Three cheers for the game.

  • Yeah when the game was a real game. Not some Super League stuffed monotonous rubbish that is around today. We need the magicians back like Lyons and his ilk, whom would throw the ball around. We need the toughness back where they took the hard hits, and most of all, WE NEED THE BEARS BACK!

  • @hoogatime so would you like to help cigarette companies earn more money?

  • who is that player at 0:22? I swear he the same guy that is on that Ashley and Martin Hair treatment add!

  • @TheAussiechick111

I beleive it's Benny Elias, former Balmain,Cockroach & Australian hooker. (very clever from dummy half gave us Qlder's fits)

  • @dizzy885 Nah my guess is its Martin Bella. Agree though, best league promo ever!!

  • This is one of the best f**kn season promo ads the NRL ever made, along with simply the best..The realy need to bring back thease type of ads and bring some nostalgia back and show the young ones what the game used to be about. before off field scandals started to create more headlines than the game itself.. b.t.w is that daryl broman doin push-ups at 1;39? CAN SOME ONE TELL ME PLEASE?

  • @dizzy885 Might be Martin Bella? He played without a 'tache for a while too, Qld and maybe Aus rep.

  • @Hustle74 Duh..already answered below by intray6591.

  • 0:24 m m m m m m m !!!!

  • One the THE BEST promos of all time! If you have a look at the stuff now, it's just highlights...this actually has character and makes you like the players!

  • Sam Stewart, look of a greek adonis? pshhht adonis was a pussy. Us Kiwis are ugly and mean, on and off the field.

  • What a great advertisement. The game really misses the likes of tina turner and the ads that came with it.

  • Go ed Tina!

  • that was awesome nrl or winfield cup when this was done always had great hype to promote their code!!!

  • I remember watching this as a 9yr old before my league games haha

  • thanks for posting this :)

  • I remember watching this back in the day in NZ. Oh The memories... Love it.

  • Touch of nostalgia!

  • Come to think of it, sounds like it too.

  • Ha, Tina Turner's face at 1.41, looks like she's trying to force a turd out sideways.

  • It sounds, smells and looks quite 1980s!

... and I GodDamn LOVE IT!

  • Gay Porno

  • Excuse my ignorance, but are there any Gold Coast (Giants) players featured in that ad? I swear they are the only team not to get any coverage. Great to see Sam Stewart and the Knights boys so prominent though!

  • @Bennyboy1985 yes i agree i didnt see any Giants footage and i think only one shot of Penrith.

  • lol, this brings back memories. I loved rugby league when these guys were all playing and this song was out. Blast from the past, yes. The NRL should advertise this song again, so that the fans that stopped watching the games, will come back. Back then, the heroes like Mel and Blocker Roach were at the end of their careers or retired. I stopped watching once they left. I still watch it, but only when I am bored with every rugby union or English football. Them were the good old days.

  • Definately better than simply the best!!!

  • rugby league the working mans game

  • Tina Turner is a transvestite.

  • @anvilofcrom and what the fuck r u screw u hoe

  • Best promo song eva bring it back GO THE EELS

  • Those dudes were actual men! wow!

  • Holy shit. Look at the mullets.

  • By far the best ever promo ever made!

  • I feel like a packet of bungers right now!

  • Did anyone notice that Tina Turner was only ever shown with one player - Cliff Lyons.

She didnt go to Australia, Cliff Lyons was playing for Leeds that year and their bits together were filmed in England (or does everyone know that already?)

  • kick ass game nrl!! awesome ad go the Panthers!!!!!!

  • So were all the dudes in this video on roids?

  • i love the old days.. definately rugby league not the same anymore but still love it.. go the broncos..

  • Rugby league, WHATS BETTER!

  • Tina Turner is proof that not all black people can dance

    - she dances like a constipated white accountant who hasnt had a drink yet.

  • Tina! She's wanted me since the first time I heard her in 1962...

  • unfortunatley people they wont bring it back because its all about money these days not good old fashioned footy were men are fucking men not lil boys they chase money and no one plays with heart anymore in my opinion anyways peace and footy

  • This is the best ever footy promotion

  • This is the best ever footy commercial

  • this is why i love the game what happened to it

  • I'm only 28 but this ad brings memories of the late 80's and early 90's when the game was still full of hard hitting tough cunts, not the sooks in todays game who need to be ambo'd off the field over a single bruise, bring back the hard hitters of yesterday!!!

  • Great Clip - Love the Spot Tackle by Ellery in the 88 GF. NRL needs to bring back promo's like this - This was the reason women I know were interested in the game - Hard hits etc.

The game had personalities - Blocker, Cleal, Wally. Now we got to PC and don't want to upset the minorities.

  • slightly homoerotic lol

  • greatest game in the world played by hard bastards back then, wheres our legends now,who a hard prop, fuck knows

  • totally agree with you saint they need someone with a creative mind to come up with a simalar add for next year league season.

  • how come nrl aint promoted like this anymore??????? this is what got me into the nrl when this was first released.

  • wow the league guys back then look like real men unlike the metrosexual /gay types you have playing in the NRL today

  • I grew up around cigarette advertising, and never once did i take a drag. F**k off the Telstra bullshit and BRING BACK THE WINFIELD CUP

  • @hoogatime bring back Winfield and all the other Cigarette companies. I also never smoked and I grow up around these adds.

  • im frozen!

  • Up the Bunnies!!!!!!!!!

  • EPIC!!!

    rugby league

what you get is what you see

    heart and soul

    BEST GAME IN THE WORLD

  • Wow! Didnt notice how gay this is when I was 9....

  • This sure brings back memories...

However, I never realised how blatantly Homo-erotic this advert is!!

Naked blokes everywhere, man on man piggy backs, naked horseplay, streams of liquid pouring into a mouth (from a dubious angle) and Tina Turner strutting about all big hair, teeth and tits....

I bed the queen that did the art direction on this advert is still having a good belly laugh at the expence of a naive population that lapped it up and didn´t see the in-joke...

  • In the days of innocence.....

  • Bloody Epic Promo The Way Rugby League Use To Be or should be for that matter.

BULLDOGS TO WIN THE 2009 PREMIERSHIP.

  • Great memories, Great times!

    Loving NRL and Goddess TT!

Play nice, respect and love the game...

  • I actually think that the NRL really want to bring back this song or simply the best as a promo game but can you imagine the royalties they would have to pay Tina every time they played it? Probably cost more than the whole comp! This was also during the time where political correctness didn't exist and rich companies like winfield could sponsor the game without every tom, dick and harry thinking it will encourage their child to take up a smoking habit all of a sudden.

  • Well with the Simply The Best one even 20 years later I can't hear that song without thinking of footy.

  • @Lerlialen I don't think it has anything to do with political correctness. What was in it for Winfield pouring all that money into Rugby League if it didn't get them any return? If it wasn't to promote smoking their products, then hell, why can't they keep the money coming?

  • Comment removed

  • This is what should be brought back to the Rugby League Theme Song.. Tina Turner.. Best promo ever for Rugby League....

  • John Quayle was the man who made the big game bigger. Bring him back!

  • OMFG - this is how I remember league from the 80's. so many memories come back after watching this!! Thanks for uploading it :D

  • GodBotherer1, you should be a diplomat.

  • Rugby league had more support as a local derby.

When they made teams like Norths, Balmain fold because the NRL wanted to broaden the game out to the bogans, the game died. Norths & Balmain supporters have the money the piss guzzling bogans don't have. Plus we have important schedules to meet instead of flying to Auckland or Cape Town to support our team away from home.

Teams must be run by club boards, not corporations.

Players need to work normal jobs too.

  • i totally agree with you on that

  • boy oh boy, great memories i miss the old days :(

  • awesome promo.

  • The best alright

  • fuck the footy was good back then.....

    bring it back.

    or the game will die.

  • Best promotion without a doubt.

  • definitly

  • Rugby League will never be the same again. Pop music has gone down the gurgler. People are more stupid and society's standards have basically gone downhill, along with gender equality gone out the window. Rugby League is now full of overpaid fools for the most part(there are exceptions) that wouldn't have more brains than a common worm. All they do is abuse women and get drunk.

But I'll dare to say this is the best commerical ever made and i will hold onto my childhood memories.

  • as do other young men in other sports....

  • How about some examples??

  • nathan bock, ben cousins, heath shaw for afl, nick darcy -swimming,

when you have young guys get paid alot of money incidents are always going to happen, however read the papers and there are many more young men on weekend and during the weeks, drink driving, fights and hitting girlfriends

  • agree doc merlin totally bring back the old days

  • There are three key elements here as to why Rugby League in Australian will never ever be what it was.

    1) Two Logo's: NSWRL and QLDRL

    2) Scrums are not packed, it's more of a group hug now

    3) Sponsorship - The Winfield Cup

Thanks to anti-smokers who helped ban tobacco advertising.

    Bring back the glory days!

  • cute

    those wer the days

  • It will come good again drlove, in bout 5years time! lmfao But Hey this is the BEST PROMO EVER! I SO REMEMBER THIS!

  • yup good old glory days of rugby league, sad reflection on todays game,we need some momentum to gain in england after our dismal display in the world cup, someting like this would be a great boost,i cant help watching it and smiling and wishing it would all come good again

  • me 2,im sure it will

  • Bring back the glory days of Rugby League

  • Im such a huge rugby league fan. i remember when this promo/ad was released. it really did make an infact on the game. Crowd Numbers increased, alot of more women got invovled in seeing the games. This year 2009 NRL panels needs to re-assess the game & put the fan & passion back into it like it did in the early 80 & 90's. GO THE DOGS for 2009

  • yeh go the dogs and promos work esp with big stars im with u mate

  • Thats the best ever promo for the NRL, its almost like Tina brang a professional team over from the states to put something like that together. I mean how long ago was that? Frigin ages, yet if they produced something like that this year in 2009 Id still be impressed. Come NRl step up and market the game!!!!

  • Australia's new Number 1 sport

The argument is simple soccer is more popular than rugby league in England and France. It is the most popular sport in 226 countries in total. Nearly all of Europe, All of AFRICA, nearly all of South America, Most of North America, Nearly all of Asia, and many pacific island countries have football as their most popular sport. There are only 35 countries where soccer is not number 1. However countries like Canada and Australia soccer is no1 participation sport

  • Please note: I will not tolerate another inter-code slanging match on this site. The fact is that people follow different football codes and it is ridiculous to claim that one is somehow better than the other.

  • @jmoul59 finally the voice of reason, there is no reason why you cant appreciate all code, whether it be Rugby League, Rugby Union, Australian Rules Football, Association Football, Gaelic Football or American Football. They each have there good and bad points to them, just enjoy each sport for what it is. (If I have left a code of football out, I apologise)

  • @jmoul59 no its not league rules END OF SLAGING MATCH. ;)

  • @jmoul59 well done Jmoul59!!! why is it that youtube and other web forums always bring out these pathetic dichotimised fueds?

  • yea true what are fight for this time, or against, meh

    sport is sport

    i love rugby league

    and Jesus loves cock

  • @jesus393993844844444 Have to disagree with you there on soccer being popular in North america, while it is relitivly popular their, there is atleast 4 major sports ahead of it in the states. and as for Australia. well, it is popular here aswell, but not as popular as say rugby league, union Afl and cricket.

  • @bfg555njr agreed, rugby league is popular and the most watched sport in Australia, but cricket is the de facto national sport of Australia because it is played all over Australia and the long history it has with the sport. Rugby league is my fave, rugby union is so fukkin boring and a a very difficult code to follow. Rugby league is easy to follow. Rugby league will get back on track in the world.

  • That didn't come out right..

  • Australia's new Number 1 sport

  • wooot wooot wooot!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thats true, like in Germany!

And there's only one thing I have to say: I love Tina Turner! :o)

  • Am I the only one who thinks this one is better than Simply the best?

  • I have long thought that this is far better than Simply the Best, especially the 1991 STB promo which was hopeless.

  • @jmoul59 my thoughts was this was a better promo than STB

  • @jmoul59 @sliat1981 I think you're referring to "The Best", it's just "The Best", that's the title, "The Best", simply "The Best". Not Simply the Best.

  • @jmoul59 best by far.

  • @jmoul59 best by far. go cuts between the players and game footage.

  • @jmoul59 best by far. good cuts between the players and game footage.

  • @sliat1981 yes. this video promotion IS... Simply the best

  • @sliat1981 infinitely better. The best NRL promo ever.

  • I LOVE RUGBY LEAGUE

  • Scrums are a waste of time.(unless your winning)..lol

  • I wish someone would put on here the Billy Moore "QUEENSLANDER" when he's walking down the tunnel. I vividly remember him doing that... and I'm not even a Queenslander myself.

Also wish someone would put up the Footy Show's "top Origin hits". From memory, I think Laurie Daley got the #1 top hit.

  • QUEENSLANDER !!!! GO COWBOYS 2009

  • all i got 2 say is "QUEENSLANDER"

  • hahaha...seem much afl or rugby union by all means there are no dangerous plays in those games, no players get into off field incidents hahaha

  • That is Bob Linder, played quite a few origin matches for Qld during the 80's.

  • @gustopepino thank u soooooo much - u r a legend and i am 1 happy housewife with another spunk to drool over!!

  • Question - who is the guy at 20 sec's in, standing between two players and leans back to look in the direction of the camera? He has short hair? I think he's also towards the end of the clip?

  • Oh this certainly brings back some happy memories of the good old days of rugby league and the characters...

  • You gotta love ya league

  • go the storm

  • NOTE TO ALL USERS: To watch this video in high quality without the pixellations, add the following straight after the URL: &fmt=18

  • Ahhhh, the good old days.

Rugby League players had a wife, they had children. Teams wore a jersey and not a billboard. The football had laces, the 10, 30 & 40 metre lines were broken line markings. Footballers played for their club, not their bank balance or ego's. Head high's were a sin bin, cheap shots and maiming players was a send off. Football and Leagues Clubs spent money on junior development. And most importantly The Bears played at North Sydney Oval. What ever happened to the game??

  • They compromised their history and tradition for the sake of trying to gain mass appeal, it has ruined it completely.

  • yes trying to expand the game beyond sydney suburbs is such a bad thing, its now a full time job and players deserved to get as much as they can during their careers, what happened to the bears?

5000 people turning upto games that what happened, club went broke and rthe fans went running.

  • They are lucky if 5,000 people turn up to a game now. The game is dead thanks to it being full of street thugs who just belt the crap out of people.

  • hmm strange comment, all nrl clubs average over 11 000, go back to the 80's and the average was 7000, the game has come back from the super league war and is now better than ever (hell yes though so much more to improve)

  • also the game is at its best, faster and more skills than any other, the 80's are gone champ, move with the times and enjoy the great game the way it is now or move on and stop whinging

  • erwin had to be jealous. tina around all those hot men.

  • I am overwhelmed with how RAD this video is!!! I remember it as a little tike and the combo of Tina and those burly men with mo's is just too good to be true. Solid gold!

  • this was the classic days of 1989 to the mid 1990s winfield cup rugby league the good old days loved them

  • I got the video and you play rugby? I like that...

  • Hands down the best promo for footy. Ever.

  • If i didnt know what rugby league was i would have thought this was an ad for american football. Both rubbish, overhyped sports.

At least back then rugby league wasnt owned by an american company, beacuse now it is!

    (News Corp) Very unAUSTRALIAN.

  • the days of real players@champions......osum clip m8......

  • yeah the classic 1989 winfield cup series the good old days

  • this promo saved rugby league....thanks Tina =)

  • WINFIELD C-wheeze-UP

  • Please, Tina Back to Rugby!!!

  • why were you saving this video?!

  • This clip was at the start and end of the Canberra Raiders vs Balmain 1989 grand final video. It was a bonus on the tape I wasn't aware of initially. It added to the enjoyment of the game considerably and judging by the overwhelming positive response here, many others feel the same.

  • Benny Elias, the legend

  • not a pack in sight

  • Ah the memories

  • That ad is all time! Second only to Simply the Best. Plenty of Balmain footage and none of Wests. I like it

  • Yes the rugby verison of simply the best is on here. It is under 1990 Tina Turner Rugby League.

  • has anyone seen the rugby version of simply the best? is it on here?

  • Oh Souths... so close

  • What can you say..... great song, great add!

  • 2008 will be the best season yet!!

    premiers?? BRONCOS!!!!!!

  • at :24, the guy looks like a gay porn star.

  • funny

  • funny

  • This would be great re-done with modern players...lots of hotties to choose from ;-)

  • There was talk about doing that just a few months ago for the centenary of rugby league celebrations. Regrettably Gallop came out and said (paraphrasing) that promos this year needed to be about the whole hundred years, not a specific period around the end of the 1980s.

  • David Gallop seems to be ruining alot of things for the centenary, i just wish they would actually listen to the fans for a change, it would be a miricle if he ever bought the NRL to Adelaide

  • Sing it T...let 'em 'av it! x

  • this is aussie rugby league the best!!!!!

i remember this ad on tv too back in the 80s!

  • The best promo for the game!! Showing how footy should be played...Hard, brutal and uncompromising. No fancy hair doo's here..real men playing a real game!!

  • i agree this is a mad video and was back in the day when i was 12 and loved watching big mal and dailey run around the park. club matches were played with passion and the fans came out in force. not any more though the game today has been destroyed by players, fans and buisness man like willy (fuckwit) mason, murdoch, buldogs supportes and 2 3rds of every other player that plays the game today.

  • Awesome. Those were the Best Days of Rugby League. The Best memories. Rugby League was very much "The Greatest Game Of All"...They need to go back to promotional material that's proven and works.

  • Tina rocks.

  • top vid. don't make em like that any more

  • Problem was, they stuck with Tina Turner for another five years and Rugby League lost irretrievable ground to the AFL (Aussie Rules) as a result of outdated marketing. Remember Tina's embarrassing performance at the 1993 GF... She looked old and outdated but the league stuck with her. Now AFL out ranks League in all facets by 3-1.

  • AFL? You must be kidding! While RL was getting more viewers and attracted the interest of Rupert AFL was stuck in a timewarp where it has stayed ever since. It took the Swans victory a few years ago before anybody north of the Murray even knew it existed.

  • You've got rocks in your head son. Yes your AFL is huge but it is only huge in Victoria. Your sport is NOT an international sport. Which is what your down fall will be and has always been. But hey, this is with out a dought been the best promo vid ever

  • Only huge in Victoria! Ahahahahaha! Come on dude. Head out of the sand!. Western Australia-games sold out, Adelaide crows 50,000 members. 50,000! Brisbane? triple premiership and games SOLD OUT! Um, and the International image thing is old and tired. look at what the networks pay in fees for National broadcasting rights. Why is the Rubgy League rights so much smaller? Oh, and Rugby League World Cup? Yes, you know. E-m-b-a-r-a-s-s-i-n-g. Cheers-mate.

  • played in how many countries??? 1.. sorry champ we win

  • I suppose the Rugby League World Cup is embarassing sometimes, especially when we play against teams like Ireland and thrash them. Oops, I forgot Ireland are the only international opposition AFL has, and you still struggle to beat them. Also I think a round ball, 4 goal posts and a bloody soccer net at each and your players probably still miss them on occasions... That is E-m-b-a-r-a-s-s-i-n-g. Who gives a toss about broadcasting rights and 50,000 members.I know what game I would rather watch.

  • NOTE: Any further posts by AFL supporters trying to denigrate the rugby codes will be deleted. This debate is now closed.

  • no need to worry, they only enter these comments out of insecurity. I`m sure most league fans don`t think "hmmm, I might go onto an American football site and bag that tonight". Why bother? If Tina likes it that should end any debate.
