I love how Hawai'ians refer to the unification of Hawai'ians by Kamehameha as benign. My last visit to Hawai'i I visited the Nu'uanu Pali lookout and learned that the unification of Hawai'i wasn't a nice peaceful thing. It was done by slaughtering the other kings and opposition.
Hawai'i was sold, made a US territory and then a state.
The USA will not give up a state or a territory with such military signifigance.
