@UTurn204 To be fair Marcus played in the ILH, which is the best league in Hawaii from top to bottom. The likes of Manti Teo, Jason Gesser, Timmy Chang among others played in it. Now I'm not saying he'll be instant GOAT, but he will be better than Darron Thomas and Dennis Dixon.

BTW don't knock high school Hawaii football, it's very underrated, but the players can ball with the best.

The read-option game took a little backseat with Darron Thomas, but with Bennett and Mariota as the 1 and 2 now that should change, both have( and Mariota especially) the speed to break contain and beat guys 1 on 1. Many good pro-style programs were taking a serious interest at him because of his size and throwing mechanics, 6'5 and throws a really nice accurate ball, but he was 100% solid to Oregon as soon as he committed.

People said there was no way Thomas could ever replace Masoli and I know for a fact a lot more people said there's absolutely no way that James could EVER replace Blount. Chip Kelly has proven he recruits guys that will fit his system and obviously alot of good players put into his offense become great players. I don't see why he can't start over Thomas or Bennett.

FYI. I am a former HI resident attending UO (graduate student) and I just wanted to confirm to the readers of this post Marcus is wowing them in practice. To answer ghostfacekillah....the rating system is a very imperfect science. It also is weighted heavily by sophmore/junior performance, which in the case of Marcus was limited. UO recruits well though and they made a great call with Marcus.

Ive played against Marcus and i can assure you he has the arm to play at any level. He has the arm strength and accuracy. Yea he can run but he can definelty throw.

mariota is a better at running the ball i think than randall and has better arm strength. it will be hard for him to beat out randall though because of his quick release assuming he proves to be a good decisionmaker. mariota is clearly underrated because hawaii isnt considered as competitive as some places. i love that little hesitation move he has to dodge defenders...could be very effective at any level.

This guy is going to be amazing in Chip's offense. He can make all of the throws with great touch and has Taylor Martinez like quicks. Seems more like a natural runner unlike Thomas who is a bit awkward. By the time Thomas graduates he will be a redshirt sophmore with two years under his belt learning the offense. No disrespect to Bennett but if Mariota doesn't start after Thomas, he will only have one year to be the "man" as one year separates the two. Only one year would be upsetting.

Dukefan, I do agree with you. It is hard to compare how tough Hawaii is against Florida. Being from the Northwest we do see alot of kids come from Hawaii that are pretty intimidating. And for now Darron Thomas is in the driver seat for Oregon. Depending on what happens with Jerrad, and from what i hear he is going the JUCO path, Marcus could be a good fit to take over that driver seat once Darron Thomas either graduates or heads to the NFL. Chip Kelly will definitely mold him more.

dont get me wrong, i love oregon, but making him better than jerrard and darron are a little bit out of reach. i dont know how tough hawaii high school football is, and his numbers are unreal, but jerrard puts up those exact numbers in the state of florida, let alone in the miami are. it also is a hard transition into the ducks offense especially at qb for a freshman. he does have alot of raw talent though, needs to bulk up with his height and he could be someone that is like a tebow or c newton

This is a great pick up for Oregon. This kid definitely flew under the radar for other schools. Just from watching the videos he is going to fit in perfectly with the type of offense Oregon runs. I see A lot of similarities with Dennis Dixon's style of play. Only major difference is that Mariota looks more accurate. But i am sure that he will set his own legacy at Oregon where others are compared to him. GO DUCKS!!!!

Only two bad things i saw. One being on two of his completions, the ball was a little too behind the receiver, and if he would of led them more they would of scored. And also how far out he holds the ball when he rolls out. In high school its ok cus he is much faster than everybody else, but not in college. Other then that it was great, one of the best passers on the run ive seen in a while and also very innovative when the D-line penetrates, and you cant teach that. Welcome to Oregon!!

This guy shows alot of qualities MUCH higher than a 3 star ranking... such as his ability to see pressure coming and moving the pocket while keeping his eyes down field... and his ability to improvise on broken down plays and come out on top.
