Some thoughts I got from a recent paper: IA was HK's offering to the Oscars on 2002 & it never even made the shortlist while Departed, which Alan Mak felt was a betrayal to the script, blew away audiences.

Also: IA was declared in 2 different sources to be both Japanese & Korean. Its creators called the organisers of the Oscars for an explanation.
