At the time of its first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany. Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Hitler, fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis, whom he excoriates in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts".
Wiki: The Great Dictator is a comedy film by Charlie Chaplin released in October 1940. Like most Chaplin films, he wrote, produced, and directed, in addition to starring as the lead. Having been the only Hollywood film maker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, this was Chaplin's first true talking picture as well as his most commercially successful film.[1] More importantly, it was the first major feature film to bitterly satirize Nazism and Adolf Hitler.
Apparently a lot of you kids need a history lesson. Charlie Chaplin was a famous actor in the early 20th century. He was the Tom Hanks of his time, bigger though. This movie and this speech are rather poignant because first he was famous for silent films, and secondly because he was Jew himself. This character actually ties up the real dictator and pretends to be him to make this speech. Read, watch, learn, don't be ignorant. It's not okay to be ignorant.
@lanser87 He was doing a parody of Hitler, for which he was reviled, despite he was trying to relay a great message. Even decades later, on "Whose Line is it Anyway", actors were not allowed to make fun of Hitler.
@creekerboy253 no he was a great dictator. As far as the definition of a dictator goes, he was very good at it. And a good leader. But his morals and wants for the country were terrible. But imagine if he had been a great man? A Ghandi type character who is simply fed up with the wars and murdering and hate.
@ribenawrath but he proved by so many of his decisions he hadnt this type of caracter soooooo yeah, we can say, sorry for you, that he actually was one of the worst dictators, even considering dictator is not a bad word ;)
@technoskill the irony of you insulting a man in a comment on a video like this is sad. It was a misunderstanding on both sides and neither party should have resorted to petty insults. This speech is essentially an attempt to teach the human race compassion for his fellow man.
For all who want the world he speaks of...for man to be creators and have no higher power over them! like this comment! It is possible! It is very possible.
1) I'd also like to live in a world where 90 percent of whites don't fear people of color only on the basis of color.
2) A world where today's whites will finally take full responsibility of what was done by their ancestors to people of color, and I don't mean take the blame of what was done but Instead clean up the mess that they were left with since they are the only ones left to clean it .
3) Lets fight for a world that is equal in the truest sense of the word.
@lithiumfoxPR. Because their influence ruined the world, and also, they're the only ones who are in the position to make the world better, if they wanted to. Look at any poor society, whites are usually the reason why they are poor. Whites use the wealth they took away from other societies in order to finance dictatorships that ruin those same societies, and this is all done to maintain their unfair advantage over other people. Imagine if they used that wealth to build those same societies.
@Elififa =/ That's just the rich in general. Not just whites. Not just blacks. Not just asians. So on so forth.
I'm going to point out China's dictatorship, the issues in Libya, pretty much any "dictorial" African country.
The mexican drug cartels.
So on. So forth. Greed is the issue. Not race. Race might "seem" like the underlying issue, but even if it WASNT, there would still be this "rich/poor" split. (China is my biggest example on this. All the same race. Huge Rich/Poor divide.)
@lithiumfoxPR. I totally agree, but that does not change the fact that a lot of the issues you just mentioned are caused by western governments, which most white people support. I didn't say that all of the issues I mentioned are caused by whites. I said most most of them are, because most rich people are white. and also, rich people aren't responsible for what the average white person does, or at least for the most part ot it. May be ignorance is the cause, but can we say so for cllg students?
Rich would be compared to (the country? the city? the world?)?
You can have a rich Bill Gates, who I wouldn't believe is entirely evil, yet his subordinates are probably assholes.
Then you have a guy like Gaddafi who basically hordes the money to himself, and only to himself, to please himself. (with brothers who have wifes who apparently dump scolding hot water on people.
@Elififa THEN, not only that, but the "poor" also, rather than remaining humane and ethical, decides to rob, steal, rape, murder, and destroy those around them, rather than also help their world be a better place.
Before you get started on me, I work at a mcdonalds. I'm white/latino (norweigian and cuban, seriously messed up). I have many skills, but prefer to sit at home playing video games. It's my own damn fault i work at mcdonalds.
@Elififa I didn't go around having sex all the time, thinking "Oh... I could end up with a child. I can't support a child." I didn't get the best education, i had a simple public education. I haven't even really tried to go anywhere. My parents are divorced (my mom has twice, i don't even know my father), I almost died when i was 2. My grandpa committed suicide. I have almost NO friends. (because they turned into drunk dumbasses), and I am STILL doing pretty ok for myself. =/ Just saying.
@Elififa In my line of work, i really don't see race as the issue. It's the attitudes of the people. And really, it doesn't matter what race you are, it's the "i don't care i don't wanna learn i don't wanna do anything" attitude that pisses me off. My sister does it, that chick i work with does it, the people who come in and buy stuff do it.
That's the issue. Not race much anymore. =/
Well, almost not much anymore. *points to the mass of ignorance in the southern part of my country*
@lithiumfoxPR You asked me to define most. Most as in more than 70 percent of the top 100 richest people in the world are white. CEO's of big corporations are overwhelmingly white. Most dictatorships are usually backed by the US government with the UK not far behind. Of course let's not forget that the UK gave us the world we live in today. A world where colored people are ashamed of their physical features.
@Elififa. "I don't care" is usually an evasion tactic. The people who say that know that there is a problem, and often see and know what the problem is, but they choose to ignore the problem. To you race might not be an issue, but to the people who say "I don't care", race is very much an issue. Race is very much an issue to blacks and Latino's who are often targeted by the police. You are actually doing worse than what they do. You are denying that there's even a problem.
@Elififa ....um. I said there is a race issue. Not as much as people still say, although that varies based on location.
I didn't deny it. I was stating that the issue is that people are not carrying to further themselves. They'd rather "enjoy life", rather than work. And this works for ALL races. My sister does this, and it annoys me. "I dont' need to learn that. That's a waste of my time" stuff like that.
Example: People use technology, yet refuse to understand the underlying technology.
@Elififa =/ To completely blame race, or completely take this argument and act like race is the only issue, is complete and utter ignorance, and obvious racism. You are acting like whites are the only "awful people" in the world, yet it's everyone's fault now days. Whatever. To act like race is the only issue is just a complete lack of understanding on your part. I take society as a whole, split it up, and you still have the whole. You can't just go "It's racism."
@Elififa Also, the Top 1% don't just enslave one race, they enslave the entire population with wage slaves. What was once a "colored persons" problem is now everyone's problem.
Now before you CONTINUE to keep making yourself look like a racist asshole ("ITS THE WHITES FAULT") (yes that is racism), I just want you to understand that
A) There is a problem (mainly in the southern states still)
B) I have a racist white friend. I smack him when he is.
@lithiumfoxPR.I never said it was "whites fault". I said that whites are the only ones in the position to fix the issues we have today. They have the power to change our leaders minds. If whites never got involved with the antislavery movement, then slavery would still exist today. but lets assume that it is as you say "whites fault". I wouldn't be racist if I said that they bare most of the blame, I'd simply be stating fact. Who's fault would it be then if the huge rich majority are white?
@TurinDarein French are the Losers, losing every war, and or retreating. Great Britain we defeated way back in the 1700s, and now our allies. Soviet Russia doesn't exist anymore and lost in the Cold War, we were the first to have a man on the Moon! So Yes America definitely wins. The French are the weakest/saddest of them all, if it wasn't for the Eiffel Tower, France would have nothing to live up to. America, Bitch! You must have not listened to this video? You didn't get the message.
@zcdarktide Nah it's about Nazism and racism. Of course it's about being human -_-. The guy before was talking crap. You shouldn't follow his foot steps/

@sikapena last time i checked great dictators don't have much of a soul. and your opinion really means nothing to me because i checked the history of your comments and they are ALL NEGATIVE. obviously you took nothing from chaplin's speech.
I actually felt riveted to the spot while watching this. His speech was captivating already, but with M83 behind it, it just gave it so much more emotion. Powerful stuff.
You people are too stupid to realize what Chaplin is saying can only be delivered by government. Too naive. Too dangerous. If the human race has become lost it's because of the human race. Nothing else.
@Minionuup i dont think he ever claimed that government itself was the issue, hes talking about democracy and freedom in comparison to a dictatorship...
Starting around 2:00 I got goosebumbs and shivers down my spine. I never knew Chaplin was as good with sound as without. He memorized that whole thing, dang! You don't see many actors like that any more.
If I could vote for the most brilliant and awe-inspiring synergy between film and sound ever matched I would without a shadow of a doubt vote for this. The speech is utterly incredible, the m83 song is wonderfully goosebump enducing, like something out of blade runner, and the two together, well...it's amazing.
@doomduc8 In theory, what he did was good. It's like now, with all the people saying to git rid of all the Mexicans. That's only a quick fix, like it was then, and it causes more harm than good. This kind-of show's the way Hitler should have used his power, and the way WE should be using it NOW!!!!!.
One of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

I actually felt riveted to the spot while watching this. His speech was captivating already, but with M83 behind it, it just gave it so much more emotion. Powerful stuff.

the synth really adds more emotion to the speech !

You people are too stupid to realize what Chaplin is saying can only be delivered by government. Too naive. Too dangerous. If the human race has become lost it's because of the human race. Nothing else.
Minionuup 1 year ago
@Minionuup i dont think he ever claimed that government itself was the issue, hes talking about democracy and freedom in comparison to a dictatorship...
gjb707 1 year ago
@Minionuup firstly, chaplin didn't say anything about government in general, just greed
your last argument could be applied to nearly any socio-political problem
you are terrible sir, your argument is just a straw man, and you suck.

The speech is utterly incredible, the m83 song is wonderfully goosebump enducing, like something out of blade runner, and the two together, well...it's amazing.

so wait was he emulating Hitler? Like i know he gave good speeches to get to power was this one of them?
doomduc8 1 year ago
@doomduc8 In theory, what he did was good. It's like now, with all the people saying to git rid of all the Mexicans. That's only a quick fix, like it was then, and it causes more harm than good. This kind-of show's the way Hitler should have used his power, and the way WE should be using it NOW!!!!!.
