The catch with DSLR HD video is the rolling shutter problem. However, that can be corrected with software, to some extent. That said, you can still get excellent video out of them. People have shot professional commercials and short films with DSLRs. I personally know an Icelandic director who shot a short film on a couple of high-end Canon DSLRs. It screened at the Reykjavik International Film Festival, back in the fall.
It's not your camera, kids, it's what you do with it that counts.
Julian, I know a lot of people who say that Lighting is the most important tool in a filmmaker's arsenal, however none of them suggest any form of lighting, I was wondering if you could help with that because there are so many options. Thank you.

hey im a amiture film maker and i was wondering what is the verry best hd camera i can get for around $200 i make kinda vlogs type videos and plan to make skits aswell so whats the best hd camera i can get for this type of thing?
as an amateur filmmaker I can tell you that HD cameras are not cheap. However, If you are making vlogs then a good place to start would be either an HD webcam from Logitech like the C910 ($99) or a Flip HD cam ($100-$200 depending on where you buy), both have good quality, are relatively cheap, and easy to use.

I went with Nikon because I liked the glass better. I'm struggling with the "jello" effect with moving shots. I'm pretty sure its Nikon as opposed to the actual model.
Do you have problems with moving shots with Canon? I don't have enough glass that I can justify switching brands still.
ALSO, with a DSLR how to you handle audio????? adaptor for XLR or do you run it separate (which is alot more work but I'm not sure what solution is best yet)
The most expensive camera I have seen is $598,000. It wasn't even 1080p it was in 720p, but it did have duel lens though, my most expensive is $9,000 but i have dos (two in Spanish)
Hey man, I'm using a Canon T2i, and I'm loving it. Wondering what lens you'd recommend I invest in. Affordable would be nice, but duh. I'd love you recommendation though, regardless of price.
@Merensanity 24-70 2.8L lens. sharp and can be used for wide shots and mild telephoto. Im a photographer and this lens is a great in many respects and can be used in many applications in regards to composition. Trust me, you wont go wrong with this lens ;) If anything, you will take amazingly sharp photos ;)
It would be great if you could answer this for me, however you can, even though you probably won't have the time, but where do you suggest to go to buy lighting, and what sort of lighting to buy? Right now I'm using halogen work lights, which aren't the greatest, but they give bright light, but it's less directional. Any suggestions of where I might go about purchasing some lighting equipment similar to what you use or equivalent to it?
I got a 7D, stock 28-135mm lens, what lens do you use? and do you reccomend 3rd party lenses? also, I know you have professional mics, but do you have an external sound recorder or plug into the camera?

Hey julian im just really curious why you chose the canon 7d over the rebel t21 550d? I assume you wanted the camera primarily for video. from what i've seen the 7d and 550d have identical video. so why spend 1,800 when you could have spent 899? is there some unknown video advantage to the 7d i dont know about? i'm only asking this cause im about to make a purchase. Thanks for the vid tho
The video part of both cameras IS identicall between t2i and 7D but the t2i lacks stuff like high def HDMI out ( only has Standard def ) Manual white balance. thats the only two things that I know of that are different. The t2i records on an SD card, the 7D on a compact flash ( SD is better ) Mainly for video use , go with the t2i, they have exact same frame rates and size outputs. If you want a heavier body, and better still pics, go with the 7D.
I'm looking into getting a camera, and my dad's director of photography recommended looking into DSLR cameras.
I started checking it out, and it's like a whole new world opened up! I think I'm going to go with the Canon EOS 550D, now it's just a matter of lenses
anyways, thanks for all of this advice - being an aspiring film maker, it's really helpful!
Thanks for the advice. You shouldn't worry about these videos being too long cause anyone watching them is trying to learn and the detail is a good thing
i think people think you shoot RED because your delivery style is a little on the flat side, which is a nice look. not very contrasted. RED shoots Raw obviously, so it looks really flat right out of the box. most of the RED footage ive seen, the colorists generally keep that flat look because it looks like film. haha i dunno, just ramblin a thought.
I know you've become adept at lighting throughout your experiences, so my question is what lighting equipment do you use? You mentioned you have tons of equipment, but I want to know what's a great light kit, especially for beginners. Thanks!

For college, if your on the basic level media course you tend to use Canon XM1 and 2. If Your on a higher course then you use a PD170, and then later on a Panasonic HD (Not sure which one) and if your on the highest course then you use a Song HD (Again, not sure which one)
For a college, this equipment along with alot of other media eqiupment is really good. Even alot of universities around england, even where I live, dont have the media equipment the college does, so its pretty nice.
Hey Julian. I bought an EX1 last year and as you may know, it's a fixed lense. I was wondering if you knew anything about the 35mm adapter on wich you can fix any lense you want. Is it worth it ? The letus extreme cost something like 4000$. I want to optimize my dept of field with my ex1. For now it's ok, but doest have the "suject dramatic look" I want. especialy in small place where I have no choice but to put the camera realy near the subject.
the Pentax k7 is a good one as an all rounder with a decent lense, i use it for my college photography a-level. The videos are also good, with a 14.6MP full-size CMOS you can go wrong
I was hopeing you would say 7D. I saw that MGM uses the 7D and i was amazed by the video quality. But i also loved the quality of your videos, but they definitly have a different look. But that must just come down to lenses, lighting and editing
Just a quick shoutout to all now eager buying a Canon EOS 7D... Gordon from Cameralabs(.com, cameraguru if you ask me) really recommends the Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i. It's actually pretty damn close to the 7D but for a fraction of the costs. I myself have a Canon Powershot SX1 IS with 1080p HD filming which actually works amazingly well with video and is very versatile (though not really meant for productions). Just weigh the pro's and cons and look into it.
Julian is so down to earth, its rare to see someone like him to take the time out of his day to respond to his fans in such detail, I wish more sheeple were like that. good vid Julian im not a videographer (if thats even a word) but this video was interesting and i learned alot from it. keep up the awsome work! :), cheers!
This video was so so helpful! i'm totally kicking myself right now, because about a year ago I bought the Canon 50D, but it can't shoot video...unfortunately last year I wasn't at all into filmmaking, so that wasn't a capability I was looking for. THANK YOU for talking about lighting too! i'm looking to invest in some lighting equipment soon. Can you give me a couple different brand names for lighting equipment? And do you use Final Cut to edit? I really need editing software too. Thanks!
so you homeschooled and obviously youre not working or going to college with that much time on your hand. how do you afford such a appartement and all the gear? where do you get money from dude? 18 000 $ dude???
Can you go into more detail about how to digitize footage from a DSLR or iPhone to bring in to Final Cut Pro? I've been struggling with that one lately and would gladly feature you in my blog if you can help explain it as well as you did cameras and lenses in this video. Thanks!
Nice video! Can you make a vlog video where you tell us something more about lights - 100W, 200W, 500W, 1000W? Positioning? Price range, whats a good light kit? ect... Hope you make a vid. Thanks!
i just got the 550d for video! its amazing, i can't wait to start using it more and more. keep em coming julian. i think its awesome that you went with the dslr world.
Can you make a video showing how everything is set up when you are about to make your videos? Also, what program do you use to edit your videos and to edit your voice when you sing (if you do)? Thankss(: <3
you didnt join film school?? cz all this while i thought u are from film school. Thank you so much about the info esp for starter like me...really appreciate that.
So, last year I bought a $1000 Sony Handycam that I've made quite a few videos with. I bought it knowing that I would soon need to upgrade. The only thing is.... I don't know whether to get a DSLR that shoots HD like the 5d or 7d, or a Prosumer camera like the Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM. The reason I ask is because I see a lot of people that are shooting videos with these DSLR cameras, so I was wondering what you thought.
@theTHANEshow If you want a shallow Dept of field (When the background is blurry while the character is in Focus) ,interchangable lenses and good low light performances , the DSLRs are the cheapest way of getting that . Otherwise you are looking at something like a RED wich is like 50k for a nice setup .
i think another good point to make is that if someone is planning on buying a dslr right off the bat, stick with the kit lens (usually the 18-55) and once you use that lens enough to know what you like about it and what more you want from it... then you will know what other lens will be best for you and that you will take the most advantage of. it'll help, in the long run, to not buy lenses that will just sit in your camera bag and collect dust :)
@jazjunik Canon's kit lenses are pretty horrible though. Don't use it for long try and upgrade ASAP, if you leave it too long and then upgrade you will regret not doing it sooner because all your previous pictures will pale in comparison.
@Bseic you are very right... id go as far as saying that any kit lens is a horrible lens, but if you have no idea what you're looking for, its a good(ish) start
I'm impressed that you've been able to learn that much by yourself. I went to a one year filmcourse back in 2008, where I learned pretty much all the basic stuff.
Thanks Julian! Started leaning into directing about a year ago when i took time off from school due to some chemo i was on (I'm fine now), and just in my free time i got bored and made a music video using my iSight camera! I look back at it now and laugh. I then went onto get a consumer Canon Legria camera that shoots in HD, its alright for the time being but as i get better i think i will get the Canon 7D, I love the depth of field (macro) and i think it would be great for shot movies. Thanks!
i go to film school and people have nooo idea how much time it takes to do all the behind the scenes stuff. every little thing matters and it's a bitch.
don't shorten your vlogs. they're educational and enlightening. people who want to be solely entertained should watch your actual productions. :) thanks for posting this stuff.
@MEllO3789 For video the best you can get are prime lenses (fixed focal lenght) wich mean you can't zoom but you have better image quality . but you need to have a complete set of prime in order to be able to get a good focal range . If you wanna start out with the DSLR's (7D,5D) and you don't have a big budget you can get the canon 24-70 f2.8 wich is really good for a zoom (its not as fast as prime lenses but its good) .
A lot of ppl are asking but i would like to know as well, what editing software are you using? what something cheaper for beginning with? I luv tech thanks for the legthy blog it all fascinated me!
@Ephesians308 He's probably using Final Cut Pro..which is pretty expensive. For Macs, you can get Final Cut Express, or even iMovie (but iMovie is awful and I really don't suggest it). For PC, you can get Adobe Premiere, but I'm not sure of the cost or a lesser product, since I only work with macs.
@Bseic I disagree. I think if you're REALLY serious, and want a good program, buy an iMac and Final Cut Pro. Its the best you can get for video editing.
Thank you for making this video, it was very informative! One question I do have though: What lens type do you think would be best to film fast movement, such as live music? I do a lot of media for local bands, and I'm having a hard time finding the right lens for taking pictures/video at live performances.
Dear Julian, I love your vlogs and if they are long so be it! Thank you for sharing this video. Here are some questions: Mac or PC? (Because you own an iPhone I would assume Mac.) What editing software do you use? What are some tricks or some things that you have learned about lighting? What camera DID you use? I think your awesome and look up to you and inspired by our movies to become a videographer some day. -Michael D. Foster
@hollywoodMIF he probably use Final Cut studio its a complete suite for editing, color grading, doing some motion graphics its really good . Its the reason why video poeple buy Macs (its a mac only software) If you are using PC you should get premiere pro
@jbballer Yeah, the mic system is something I want to know too. I'll bet he uses a Zoom recorder for capture, but I'm looking for a good shotgun, and I love the way his stuff sounds.
I would really like to make more videos, but I'm really restricted with iMovie. I recently got final cut, but I'm not sure if that's the best thing to do being fairly new to the film world.
What Lens do you use? What camera did you use prior to the 7d?

as an amateur filmmaker I can tell you that HD cameras are not cheap.

Any clues would be appreciated ! thx !

the Pentax k7 is a good one as an all rounder with a decent lense, i use it for my college photography a-level.

NEDDY7 1 year ago
Just a quick shoutout to all now eager buying a Canon EOS 7D... Gordon from Cameralabs(.com, cameraguru if you ask me) really recommends the Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i. It's actually pretty damn close to the 7D but for a fraction of the costs. I myself have a Canon Powershot SX1 IS with 1080p HD filming which actually works amazingly well with video and is very versatile (though not really meant for productions). Just weigh the pro's and cons and look into it.
Nice video Julian.

Agreed. Lenses and Lighting matter way more important than the body is. Yup, the stories and content matter the most at the end of the day.

hi, just wanna ask some more about lighting mixed with editing..
do you somehow edit the contrast of your work, or maybe remove some color during editing? or is it all just awesome lighting? ^__^
thanks for uploading! we just got the 7d camera at our school. it's amazing! :o :D

an easy analogy you could have used for this would be art
different brush thicknesses and different brush compositions get different looks.
it may be a simple analogy that isnt 100% accurate, but it would explain a lot to people who arent tech savvy

Thanks!

Can you go into more detail about how to digitize footage from a DSLR or iPhone to bring in to Final Cut Pro? I've been struggling with that one lately and would gladly feature you in my blog if you can help explain it as well as you did cameras and lenses in this video. Thanks!

I've got a Canon 550D and a small $130 lens and it's absolutely perfect for me.
Video with this lens is incredible.
But Julian, one question:
How do you get those black lines on the top and bottom of your videos?
Is that done through editing, or is your lens just REAAAAAAAAAALLY wide?
ryanusesLOL 1 year ago
@ryanusesLOL blackbars is used to create a "feeling" in a video.
Don't want to be spamming, search youtube for "filmriot aspect ratios"
first video talks about it.
If you don't want to watch it, yes its probably done in editing.
CodesRCool 1 year ago
@ryanusesLOL Its editing he is basicly cropping to video using a 21:9 aspect ratio rather than 16:9, It makes the footage look more cinematic .

Hi Julian,
I have a pretty good question for you...
Thanks,
-Thane
theTHANEshow 1 year ago
@theTHANEshow If you want a shallow Dept of field (When the background is blurry while the character is in Focus) ,interchangable lenses and good low light performances , the DSLRs are the cheapest way of getting that . Otherwise you are looking at something like a RED wich is like 50k for a nice setup .

Thanks dude! You're a real inspiration!

niamhtheawsomest 1 year ago
i think another good point to make is that if someone is planning on buying a dslr right off the bat, stick with the kit lens (usually the 18-55) and once you use that lens enough to know what you like about it and what more you want from it... then you will know what other lens will be best for you and that you will take the most advantage of. it'll help, in the long run, to not buy lenses that will just sit in your camera bag and collect dust :)
jazjunik 1 year ago
@jazjunik Canon's kit lenses are pretty horrible though. Don't use it for long try and upgrade ASAP, if you leave it too long and then upgrade you will regret not doing it sooner because all your previous pictures will pale in comparison.
Bseic 1 year ago
@Bseic you are very right... id go as far as saying that any kit lens is a horrible lens, but if you have no idea what you're looking for, its a good(ish) start

Thanks!

what kind of lighting, editing software??
spyda1001 1 year ago
Awesome stuff Julian - you didnt say what lens you use?
MEllO3789 1 year ago
@MEllO3789 For video the best you can get are prime lenses (fixed focal lenght) wich mean you can't zoom but you have better image quality . but you need to have a complete set of prime in order to be able to get a good focal range . If you wanna start out with the DSLR's (7D,5D) and you don't have a big budget you can get the canon 24-70 f2.8 wich is really good for a zoom (its not as fast as prime lenses but its good) .

Ephesians308 1 year ago
@Ephesians308 He's probably using Final Cut Pro..which is pretty expensive. For Macs, you can get Final Cut Express, or even iMovie (but iMovie is awful and I really don't suggest it). For PC, you can get Adobe Premiere, but I'm not sure of the cost or a lesser product, since I only work with macs.
goodjoblauryn 1 year ago
If you're seriousk just buy Adobe Master Collection CS4 (CS5 so close to release). It's pricey but well worth it.

Thanks!
