I don't think the producer picked Jay to play Kato mainly for his fame. He seems to be the right pick. Kato is quiet, extremely smart, talented, mysterious, and not a native English speaker(this last one mite be tailor-made 4 Jay). The thing is, he doesn't have to fill Bruce Lee's shoes. I consider the old one a martial art movie and this one more of a sci-fi. The fact is, many ppl told me they find the Kato in 2011 has more dynamic personality and more charming. lol

I feel bad for 99.99% of Asian actors trying to make it in Hollywood. Just few years ago, the only way you can star in a major budget film is to be a Kung Fu master (Jackie, Bruce, Jet), yet you have to prove yourself first in the Asian cinema market. Guys, he learned how to speak English in a month and kept doing his concerts throughout filming. Besides, he made it clear that he's not going to try to imitate Bruce Lee's Kato. As he said, "(Bruce Lee) is a classic". Not to mention the fact that he has a huge Asian fan base. I think that it's a smart casting decision.

You know when I came to this country I didn't speak any English either and I understand how hard it is to learn the language especially when u are in ur 30's. But I did just fine. Jay never spoke English before and to make a movie in this country for the first time in a movie would be difficult. I don't think the producer picked Jay to play Kato mainly for his fame. He seems to be the right pick. Kato is quiet, extremely smart, talented, mysterious, and not a native English speaker(this last one mite be tailor-made 4 Jay). The thing is, he doesn't have to fill Bruce Lee's shoes. I consider the old one a martial art movie and this one more of a sci-fi. The fact is, many ppl told me they find the Kato in 2011 has more dynamic personality and more charming. lol

I feel bad for 99.99% of Asian actors trying to make it in Hollywood. Just few years ago, the only way you can star in a major budget film is to be a Kung Fu master (Jackie, Bruce, Jet), yet you have to prove yourself first in the Asian cinema market. Now you have to be a POP star who can't act for crap. Can't believe a guy who brought us Kung Fu Dunk and Ci Ling, two of the worst films in recent Chinese cinema history (and big budget too), still gets a shot at Hollywood. Embarassing.

Guys, he learned how to speak English in a month and kept doing his concerts throughout filming. Besides, he made it clear that he's not going to try to imitate Bruce Lee's Kato. As he said, "(Bruce Lee) is a classic". Not to mention the fact that he has a huge Asian fan base. I think that it's a smart casting decision.

They do it on purpase to cast an asian actor who can't speak english... i mean seriously there are tons of asian american actors in Hollywood and you have to go to Taiwan to get one who isn't even a martial arts expert to fill Bruce Lee's shoes?! typical hollywood bull shit, stereotyping, exploiting people and taking all the credit.

@hcnhcc312lakersbball If all you care about are ticket sales then yes, it was a good "commercial" decision, and would make a lot of money in the short run, but what does it do to the asian american stereotype and carrying on Bruce Lee's torch, the one that allows you to look up high and be proud of being asian. A hero? You're obviously not someone who looks beyond - just another person who seeks immediate gratification for the short term. Enough said.

@lg123xyz Ok, look at this. Are you more likely to see a movie that stars an unknown actor that nobody knows or one that stars a celebrity figure that you know? They cast Jay so that they can draw more attention from the Asian audience. It's all about appealing to all of the audience.
Also, are you criticizing Jay Chou just because he's filling Bruce Lee's old role but he's not a martial artist himself? Cause that in itself deserves a face-palm.

@jonathany10 For me I would rather see a positive portrail of the asian-american stereotype in Hollywood irregardless of who plays the role, but the person who'll play the role damn well better be capable, and not with fancy special effects and editing, knowing full well that the role he's reprising is from a legend. Having said that, there are also tons of ppl who don't give a shit because they're from a new generation. I'll take that whimpy palm, break it and shove it in your ass. Bitch.
