I assume it's a technique to give the audience a feeling of the general timeframe of the story (and also give an insight into some of Hugo's personal views, further examined in Florence - uncommon for most adaptions, but since some parts of the novel flow like an essay it makes sense). This is a time in which people thought the world would be GONE by now. This is a time in which new artforms destroyed the old. A time of change. Doesn't that add a bit of power and romanticism to the story?

Ok, a LONG time ago in Paris, a man named Victor Hugo wrote a book called Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris). Disney made a movie called the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, and in Quebec they made this stage musical with completely different songs and following the book more closely than Disney did. Now, I do like the Disney movie, but their movie and the musical Notre-Dame de Paris are comletely independant of each other.

Well, not all Canadians speak both, unfortunately, but he does. Here in the Maritime provinces, there are some places where we have a big celebration for the Acadian (first French colonists to Canada) presence. It's a family event, people of all ages come to make a lot of noise and celebrate being here, but there's always a few peopel who call themselves the anglo society and claim to represent all anglo-canadians who try to rain on our celebration.

I didn't think this was a bad translation at all. Very nice! I think they stumbled a bit trying to get NDdP into English. I thought "Belle" was an awful translation, and by "awful" I mean "too literal" and "didn't flow." This was pretty literal too, but it flowed better--French has a natural musicality to it that's hard to reproduce in other languages, I think. (Same with Italian, but different rhythm.)

It's live performances. (The images you see are taken from the french DVD). I know that cause I have the french CD's (Act 1 and Act 2) If you put these tracks on the videos from the DVD, the mouth movements don't match!, and by the way, any version of Notre-dame de paris is NEVER in playback, the only prerecorded stuff is the music and the choir.

I'd rather they have good syntax and rhyming, becuase exact translations are not everything. It's one thing to translate well, translate almost directly, but a completley different matter to translate as if you don't know either language you're using. They should focus more on how the song sounds than on how close to the French lyrics their unimaginative minds can manage to compose English lyrics.
