Saw his show this winter at the indoor theatre they have, this guy is 30 years old! It's weird to think that I've been going to the zoo about once a year since elementary school and it's the same ol' Alexander doing his thing now as it was back then!
I bet it was the stress of comprehension. Or maybe it was the way the study was done. Humans tend to die prematurely when they are out of their natural environment/social structure as well.
Agreed; there are FAR too many birds in captivity which cannot adapt to their surroundings and end up self-mutilating themselves. Alex was very cared for and even spoiled by humans..but perhaps more was needed than human compassion. Perhaps freedom is what exotic birds need to be TRULY happy. Very sad.
This is an EXTREMELY smart parrot! I saw a show once that featured this same parrot. He has a 500 word vocabulary, can discern colors, do simple addition (up to 10) and identify objects - basically some ability for abstract thought. I remember they offered a platter of various objects, and told him to choose the "four corner blue", Something they had never presented before. He chose a blue block!
