Tanaka wasn't known for his kata, he was known for kumite. During the Seventies, he was a repeating, dominating multiple defending world champion. His karate was very real, not just tournament karate. His technique is powerful and fast. When he was in his prime, he could kill. He has giant boxers' fists. Right here, he is just doing an instructional video to show the moves of a kata. I suggest you search for footage of him at the kumite finals in one of the All-apan tournaments. Enjoy.

You're a moron. Tanaka Sensei has forgotten more about karate than you'll ever know, and is considered one of the most significant masters to come from the JKA. I'd say he's a little more than "good" at karate.

'That person' is Sensei Tanaka. Agreed, I've seen this kata performed better, but to suggest that he's 'not that good at karate' is, I hope you don't my saying, a little bit naive, if not ignorant.

Thats because this is a Shotokan Kata.

He was an excellent tournament competitor. However, the JKA focuses on a sport and they have virtually abandoned the martial art, that is why his performance sucked.

@christianbrecht Got one, thanks, it is devoid of the delusions of the JKA and the BS they try to pass off as karate, too bad you don't have the same. If you are one of the clones in the video on your channel site, that is too bad also. I was once there, learned better, allowed myself to see the truth rather that being influenced by vanity and ignorance and found a much better place. It is called classical karate, you ought to try it. You won't, you don't have the guts or insight.

i find his moves were very stiff and not flowing. If he just made his hits stronge, but the moving nice and smooth it would have looked a lot better

As much as I respect Sensei Tanaka i don't find this display of Jion very impressive, though he does look very correct in his technique.
