There are distinctly different kinds of punk, hardcore, metal, ect. In depth listeners in any given genre want to be able to imagine the sound of the band someone is talking about, as to avoid it if its something they know they wont like. If someone asks me if i want to go to a d-beat show, I would say no, because i know it'll ape discharge.
