There are 4 violins inside. The spinning wheel at the top acts as the bow for all 4 of them. Each violin moves towards the bow as it's needed to play, etc.
Yes, that's correct, there are only three violins. Supposedly, the earliest prototype made by Hupfeld (just called the "Violina" without the piano) had 4 violins, one for each playing string. The production models "Phonolizst-Violina" only have 3 violins, playing the top three strings, I believe. Imagine having a fourth violin facing the back... not only couldn't you see it, it would be very hard to reach to tune!
uhhh... interesting beginning? Anyway, this is the first time I've heard popular music played on a Phonoliszt-Violina. Sounds very nice! They sure keep everything in fine condition at the Museum Van Speelklok Tot Pierement!
AAAAAAAAA vals :S, ze mogen snel de oude weer terug zetten, want dit is een ramp... toch bedankt voor het plaatsen, en heb je nog iets van de draai-dansorgels?

Makes one wonder who had the free time to come up with these ideas and actually manufacture this.

Employees of the Hupfeld Co., apparently.
And thank god they did!
