  • Can yo do a video on nail clipping? My dog goes physco

  • Love how KIND you are with the dog. Letting him know you're not out to hurt him, as you say, setting him up to be successful. I'm a special ed aide, and severely handicapped children can be a lot like dogs -- can't understand speech, so they don't really know what you're planning to do. Positive reinforcement works for them, because that's how you can let them know what you want, and what you don't want, and that you have their welfare in mind. Thanks for the AWESOME video!

  • Thanks so much! This is what we are doing with our dog who bites when we brush him; we're doing his training with just direct feeding of treats (we weren't quite smart enough to use a clicker!). First we treated him as SOON as he stopped biting when we were brushing him. It worked wonders -- he won't bite at all now when we brush him if we have the treats. Now we treat him if he has gone without biting for 10 or 20 seconds. What's next? Do we STOP the treats? Do we SLOW THEM DOWN?

  • @UkeGirl100 when it comes to grooming I like to keep the treats at hand always so I don't ever stop the treats all together as in my eyes the dog deserves a reward for being patient while you do something they don't like, for example this dog doesn't mind eye cleaning at all now and I do both his eyes in around a minute, I don't bother to reward all the time now that he is 100% cool about it so I reward after both the eyes are done. so for grooming I give a treat around every 1-5 minutes.

  • Thank you Sian, this video has been very useful. I have a scaredy dog with conjunctivitis and this method works. he will let ME put drops in his eyes. But he will still growl at the vet. You are doing such a good job with little Vinnie. How do you manage if you have to take him to the vet?

    Caroline.

  • Thank you Sian, this video has been very uselful. I have a scaredy dog with conjunctivitis and this method seems to work. he will let me put drops in his eyes. But he will still growl at the vet. how do you manage if you have to take Vinnie to the vet?

    Caroline.

  • Aww Vinnie is so cute! thank you so much for posting this video! I have a shih tzu mix that's 3 months old, she just developed a prolapsed third eyelid and she is terrified of us when we try to give her the medecine that the vet gave us and does not let us touch her face at all. I'm going to try this tonight. Thanks so much again! =)

  • Oh! this is GREAT! My dog doesn't like us cleaning her eyes. Thank you SOOOO much!

  • I have to thank you SOOO much Sian.

It worked, her ear is are all better and the vet is releaved too, he doesn't have to get bitten either.

    Thank youu. x

  • Bizzarre, this came just at the right time, my collie is exactly the same about his eyes being touched and has conjunctivitis so thanks for the tips. The vet said back him into a corner and get him unawares which is so creul and scarey. much prefer your way.

  • wow, that is really bad advice from your vet :-( I'm so happy that you have looked into better ways to train this. keep me posted on how you get on.

  • Nice work!

  • Awesome work!

  • Nice to see him trusting you. You can see how stressed he is at the start but he is much calmer at the end. Cant wait to see his progress, good on you taking him on

  • nicew work, sian. I like the "don't force, and they will trust you" advice to training.

  • Incredible tutorial Sian! As always (:

5*s for the great tutorial and doing such a fantastic job with Vinnie!

If Vinnie has the problem of watery eyes, dried buttermilk sprinkled in his food will do heavens!

    Take care!

  • thanks for the lovely comment and for the tip!! have a great day!

  • Thank you for this great tutorial. My dog has had some problems with ear infections last year and I need to check and clean his ears regularly now but he doesn't like it at all. We got into this relation of force at a moment, that I didn't like at all. Since reading on calming signals, I started using that and haven't forced him into anything anymore. It works wonderfully. With your video I try and improve his confidence; Thank you so much !

  • most amazing tutorial!

  • Vinnie is gorgeous !!!

    I want him :D lol :)

My chihuahua gets really bad ear infections !!!

She hates it when anyone touches her ears and snaps when I put ear drops in, so this video will REALLY help.

    Thanks a lot Sian!! x

  • aww, that's one of the nicest comments I've had :-) thank you and I hope this works for you, let me know how you get on. Vinnie sends you a hug :-)

  • @KellieOfficial yeah my chihuahua does that too but my sister cleaned her ears now :) and my chihuahua doesn't like cleaning her eyes so this video help thanks

  • Vinnie is TOOOOO CUUUUUUTE. What else can I say?! :) You are doing an excellent job with him Sian!!!

  • Sian - you are doing a wonderful job with Vinnie! Thanks for sharing this information - I am sure you will help a lot of people and their dogs!

  • I'm adding this to my facebook page...Hope you don't mind:)

  • aww, no I don't mind at all, thank you!! are we friends on FB?

  • I tried replying to this last night, but I don't think it worked bc I included a link. Anyway, I have a page on FB called Chihuahuas Are Real Dogs (well sometimes) and that's where I posted it. I should've been more specific yesterday. I'm also on FB under my own name:)

  • oo, I did look for your page but I couldn't find it, I'm not always very good on FB though so I prob did it wrong! haha!

  • Great video and information! I don't have this problem with my dog, but I did have similar issues with nail clipping and used the same type of techniques. It takes a lot of patients and you did a great job. Lucky dog:)

  • 5***** for you both-who was it that said you cannot teach an old dog new tricks ;-) xhugsx

  • Fantastic Sian, your doing a grrreat job,Vinnie is looking fabulous, aww he is so sweet-thanks for sharing.sending hugs for you all

    R/M/Meesha xxX

  • Great job! I can see that Vinnie is starting to trust you now. This proves that you have a wonderful bond with her. Keep it up!

  • Great job Sian! Mi doesn't enjoy me cleaning her eyes but she stays very still, then wants to eat whatever I fish out. hehe 5*

  • Excellent job! How lucky is that dog to find you! 5 *

  • oh he really is settling in great now! thank you very much for your lovely comment :-)

  • excelent job you've done I am working on a big dog who hates being picked up using the same concept you have here, you have excelent descrimination skills well done a 5 stars and a favourite

  • I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :-) thank you heaps for your lovely comment :-)

  • I didn't who to watch more, you or the dog. lolz...

Nevertheless tho, u know just as well as I do that this is a good video for MANY people to see who want to learn how to build trust with their pets. ^_^ I'm glad I have u on featured channels on my page. =D

  • you're so lovely Kyle, thank you for being a great friend and I consider it a great honour to be featured on your page. you genuinely really care about dogs and I love that :-)

  • Oh you do such a good job Sian, you make it look so easy and you're so patient!! I'm not sure how Banjo would go with clicker training, only because, that clicking noise, he's afraid of!! Well done again, and Vinnie is looking wonderful!! xxxxxxxxxxx

  • thank you Shelley!! oh gosh I must comment you soon, I have been so busy I have become a bad friend :-( hehe, poor Banjo being scared of the click, it's a common problem. you could always use a marker word like "yes!" in place of the click if you did want to give it a go :-) I hope you and Banjo are well and I'll be dropping by your channel very soon :-) xxxxxxxxx

  • Aww, don't be silly Sian, I'm always happy to hear from you anytime, and don't hold you to any deadlines!! I know you've been busy with study among other things, so don't worry yourself!! Thanks for all the positive feedback, as always!! : ) xxx

  • My BC mix was afraid of the click initially as well..what worked for me was clicking before feeding her to she would associate good things with the clicker and I would also click and treat very often for little things like settling down or if I could tell she was about to sit I'd 'click and praise with 'good sit'..after about a month I weaned her off the voice markers and now use the clicker daily with her and she has no problems.

  • Oh thankyou for commenting and your words of advice! That sounds like a great idea, clicking before feeding, it may take time, but I'm sure it would work with perseverance!! Thanks again : )

  • Well done Sian - I'm sure this will help a lot of people - I used the same technique for ear cleaning and nail clipping.

  • Excellent Sian - I have used this technique on my chocolate lab Tillie when using ear drops - building up slowly and treating when she let me first touch her ears, building up to being able to hold the drops against her ears, then actually being able to put the drops in!

  • Thanks

  • ¡Excelent! 5 star!!!!

  • Awesome work with Vinnie! How long was this training session? He's doing so well! Clicker training can work wonders for these kind of fear aggressive dogs..it's a shame more people with dogs like Vinnie don't use this kind of method...even if it was just voice marking because the fix is really pretty simple when you take it slow and don't rush your dog into an uncomfortable position. I look forward to seeing more of Vinnie in the future! Keep up the great work with him!

  • thank you!! it lasted about 10 minutes, however Vinnie is very patient so a shorter session might be best for a start with most dogs. I'm still waiting on stuff for the rescue video but it's still priority as soon as I get the other video clips I'll post it :-)

  • Wow, the progress he's showed is amazing for just 10 mins of training..I can see he'll be one of your trick stars in no time..he's been so lucky to find a home with you!

^_^ No rush! I do look forward to seeing the whole thing put together though, I'm sure it'll be great!

  • Aweseom Video sain Great Job vinne ;)

  • I have been following your channel for awhile and I love all your videos, but I have to say, your work with Vinnie is simply amazing and heartwarming. Keep up the great work!

  • that is such a wonderful comment, thank you so much and I hope you continue to enjoy my videos.

  • You truly have a great gift of working with animals and the patience of a Saint. As always, well done...

  • thank you SO much for your support :-) hehe, I think he needs a lot of patience to work with me too :-)

  • great video sian! its great that you chose to adopt a older "problem" dog. many people feel that they are untrainable and not worth the time and effort to rehabilitate them. nothing can be further then the truth!

this is not only a good example of helping to build trust with yout dog, but a good example of calming signals. vinnie was displaying alot of calming signals when you first started out, but calmed down and actually seemed to be showing interest in what you were doing towards the end:)

  • thanks so much, yes I agree, it's a real shame that more people don't give older dogs a chance, Vinnie is a real sweetheart and I'm very lucky to have him :-)

  • Great video, Sian. Vinnie is absolutely adorable. This is a great tutorial. I am sure it will help many owners (& dogs). This really showcases how to gain the dog's trust by not pushing it too far. Well done!

  • thank you so much Marge, you really are the best :-)
