i cut mine right down the center, (long ways) added two 2x8 cut to length, added 3 hinges and it worked great. About four years ago, when we built our house, it opens and closes like a book. it worked so well ive done it to all of our box springs just to make them easier to move. And because i was bored..
Awesome technique. We found ourselves in a similar situation. We were able to do it without cutting the fabric though. We just took the staples out from most of the side of the spring, and restapled after putting it back together. Thanks for the video !!!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. We had the same problem and were totally stumped yesterday. Today, our box spring is under our mattress in our bedroom. You gotta love the Internet, and folks like you who take the time to provide a free public service. Peace!
That foundation looks like mine. I cut it in half after watching your video and others on youtube but I took the fabric off which was connected with bunch of staples. It was pretty easy to take the staples out with a screwdriver. Goes back on easily as well. I didn't want to ruin the fabric. I also put 2 hinges on each side so it folds easily. I folded it up and carried up the stairs pretty easily by myself. And I later put the bracket on as well. It came out nice and seems real sturdy.
@dude3390 I'm not sure what hole you're referring to. This is our first attempt, and I'm pretty sure no one else has tried this before! Looking down the stairs on the left side is a breaker panel. The right side is just a wall. I don't think that opening between the wall and ceiling was supposed to be there originally, but all the other units have this.
Ha! Funny. I live in LP too... I simply do not understand why they had to add that weird wall addition to the stairs. There is no other way around it either... hauling it up through the window, whatever... I had to do the same thing.
Good idea. I've moved a lot in my life and had to deal with poorly designed floor plans where you couldn't get things up the stairs. If I ever encounter this problem I'll know what to do.
BTW who are these morons who design houses like that? I just want to lay the boots to them.
@janX9 I don't know who came up with the bright idea of putting this wall right next to the stairs like that but it doesn't seem like it was originally part of the design. Other units around me have the same setup, so i think this might have been added later on to create some kind of closet space under the stairs. Either way you look at it, it is way wrong.
if you had just bought a smart base bed frame, none of this would have been nec. cost 110.0 for a king size and only needs mattress. but cool video anyway.
@skababy8227 i bought this bed years ago, long before i had this problem. And even if i knew about smart bases i probably still wouldn't have bought one. I saw how you suggested smart bases for all other people on youtube that had this problem..
I was digging the music. "Box spring" term has now been replaced by "foundation" or "box" because the spring has sprung. For a little time and, 6 brackets and 24 screws, you saved $150 to $250+ on a split box AND you can resell this on CRAIGSLIST when you move! Why sew the sides, get a skirt (he he he) for the bed and no one will be the wiser. OPTION 2: Instead of a box spring, Three wide planks of wood (26x60xhalf inch) & set of "bed risers" ($10). But doing the CUT AND CLAMP is better!

@Defenseman619 Hi neighbor! lol Yea i tried everything. Cutting it in half was the only option, other than buying a new bed of course.
