  • Why didn't he just use the knife to cut a hole in the lining so he could toss the bomb outside??

  • not bad fro 1975 movie sure they used the real disaster but pretty impressive

  • 8:14 - What a real gentleman!

  • holly wood made a tv movie of the hindenburg watch it.

  • they used footage from the real disater

  • The only part of the movie, I believe, actually worked. They treated this thing like pure camp, which is stupid. It's not "Poseidon" or "The Volcano." This was a real tragedy and they treat the damn thing like a summer popcorn flick.

And as for the B&W segue-way, I think it was the right artistic decision. It wouldn't just blend in with the real footage. This is the Hindenburg we all know. They're trying to convince us these people... were really there.

  • Hollywood gets one major fact all wrong (as usual). The father, mother, daughter and two sons are based on the Doehner family, Germans who were living in Mexico City. In the movie, only the father dies, but in reality, the daughter died as well.

  • I actually wouldn't mind seeing a remake of this today. Back in 75 they could not reproduce the crash sequence. But today's CG could do it flawlessly and you could see it from tons more angles.

Could be good!! Not a bad story.

  • A bomb..... A BOMB CREATED THE DISASTER?!?

  • @nogdude23 If it were simply a bomb, we'd still have these today.

  • The trailer to the has been recently posted here on Youtube! Do search on 'THE HINDENBURG (Theatrical Trailer)' along with some other great disaster film trailers!

  • The US Naval personnel at Lakehurst acting heroically.

  • Charles Durning is a bit too fat to play Captain Pruss, LOL

That two part drama released this year was horrible. They ruined it with the engine car tumbling off the airship as it crashed... LOL

  • That's gotta hurt!

  • instead of playing with the bomb dumbass, how about just throwing the whole thing overboard ?

  • @JerichoDitch2 I suggest watching the movie. It's been 36 years since I've seen it and I'm trying to get the DVD.

  • Thumbs up if you couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed when it changed to black and white during the crash scene

  • @plusplusplusplusp They had to change it to black and white because they used the newsreel footage of the crash to save money.

  • @MrPixarGuy

But I really wouldn't have minded had I seen colour shots mixed with greyscale newsreel footage. That might even serve to emphasise that this was a real event that was captured on film.

  • @plusplusplusplusp Robert Wise the director wanted to blend the actually footage of the real Hindenburg blowing up and crashing...THIS film was a box dud...bad acting...bad everything...the real burn and crash only lasted less than 20 seconds!!! this shit goes on FOREVER!!!! Bad screenplay, just a lousy flick.

  • @UFOSPACE1999

I actually quite liked it (but then again, it may only be because I'm quite interested in airship history).

  • that was 39 seconds?

  • The whole thing was fake.

  • 2 people are Goering's henchmen

  • Bomb: Um two wires from a battery ? How complicated can it be? Pull wires out of plastic explosives??.

    Land safely??

  • @roquefortfiles Next time I'm in a zeppelin , and there's a bomb on board, I'll certainly be calling you

  • Great film. Wonderful cinematography and visual effects. Outstanding performance by George C. Scott.

  • Comment removed

  • Good thing he freed that dalmatian! I hate to see a dog get hurt in a movie!

  • I was just looking through my chemistry textbook and it mentioned the Hindenburg...this is interesting.

  • @misszallienicole Same ^_^

  • No! He almost turned it off until that guy distracted him!

  • @MrDietcokeman Until you have THE ACTUAL WATCH in your HANDS FROM THE MOVIE and it is INSPECTED then you can make your claims, until then SHUT THE HELL UP.

  • @MrDietcokeman No where on the watch does it say "TIMEX", only in your mind dude.

  • In order to hurt the nazis resistors had to be just as brutal. the difference was they built something that lasted and they werent so morbid.

  • i know this was made to explain how each main character survived, but the length of time half this happened, the ship would have crashed by then

  • As usual, however, Hollywood in its infinite un-wisdom had to rewrite history. With the family who were supposed to be the Doehners, the pretty teenaged daughter survives, whereas in reality, she and her father perished. Half the characters were fictional, including the acrobat (played by Robert Clary) and the middle aged couple in which the wife is pregnant. So are the characters of the Countess (Anne Bancroft) and the two white collar criminals (Rene Auberjonois, Burgess Meredith).

  • Call me crazy but he took the bomb out maybe a small hole again and toss the damn bomb out of the fat balloon would have been better? damn it Patton!

  • I do like this film. It is BEAUTIFULLY shot and the FX are fantastic. It is not a perfect film but what i like about it is that it HAS A STORY!!! So many of today's films are such utter garbage. Screenwriters have forgotten how to put a beginning middle and end in movies today. I never thought i could but i have become VERY cynical on films these days.

The only thing about this scene that i wondered about for years. The bomb has like 3 puny low voltage wires.

    Uh pull them out??

  • @MrDietcokeman Not to mention the fact that Ridder has all the time in the world to just cut a hole in the side of the ship and drop the stupid thing out. I guess heroism tends to override common sense a lot in American films.

  • EPIC

  • @MrDietcokeman did we see the same film..IT WAS boring and dull..and DUMB...everyone speaks perfect English..being from Germany!!! This film had a clunky screenplay..and terrible acting from well known great actors..and Robert Wise..should of NOT directed the dull affair..like he should of NOT directed Star Trek..another dull affair...LET someone with energy direct!!!

  • Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. :)

  • George Bush was behind it...

  • Wow, saw this on DVD and nearly bought it, pretty glad I didn't, that was TERRIBLE!

  • Fez they make the Germans look like shit In this movie when in reality they were alot better and at first they were suppirior to our troops in every way. give them a little credit!

  • Can you help? I am looking on youtube for any bit of a 1964 television show called East Side West Side. I just learned about it. It was supposed to be quite good, but was cancelled after one year. It dealt with issues of race, issues of life in the big city, I understand scripts were smart, acting good starred George C Scott. I searched youtube by title, actor's name. So much but none of it that. I can't believe no one uploaded as it had a short re-run a few years ago.

    thanks if you can help.

  • of course its a bomb!!!! hello....WERE ALL TAUGHT THAT MOVIES ARE FAKE...BUT IN REALITY IT was a fucken bomb...SEEK THE TRUTH

  • Bomb lol.....

  • did that man drop the lady in the fire?

  • Why is some of the movie in black and white??

  • die schwarzen szenen sind originalaufnahmen des unglücks

  • @jemachri Because they incorporated actual B&W newsreel footage of the real Hindenburg explosion, rather than re-create the whole thing. Either for budget reasons or to give it a greater sense of historical accuracy.

  • @traod8 the intended this to make it look more historically accurate. A colour version exists but nobody has it... I heard that that was aired in some theatres as well.

  • "Some landing!" LOL

    }}}XD <Laughing Klingon

  • I'm scrutinizing the footage of the crash at 8:48 and I'm wondering: Did the fire lift a large section of the skin off the skeleton, throw it upward, and then burn it?

  • Ritter (George C. Scott) had a knife in his pocket. Why didn't he just cut the Hidenburg's lining and toss the bomb outside.

  • If you look carefully at 5:05 there is a hole in the airship as it's crashing. Now the crew inside the airship might have done this to cut a hole to escape but I'm not sure. What do you think?

  • If you mean to the top left of screen there is the ballast water being released. There are other angles showing this occurring also

  • Why didn't Ritter just take the bomb back to the guy and say, "You switch it off"?

  • Because he was half-dead

  • This movie in my opinion an attempt to mimic the tragedy of the Titanic(& no shit, the death of the Hindenburg was the same feeling, only it was recorded) but I think this was the clear attempt by part of the director, writers & producers.

I recall this people getting sued by an author who proposed the idea of sabotage. My opinion, the sabotage theory is bogus. They said this man did cause his girlfriend was a communist I think & therefor hated Nazism !!

    WORST EXCUSE EVER!!

  • My criticism is largely fuel by the fact the conspiracy theorist said Eric Spehl & I QUOTE " he didn't want to kill people, and that he intended for the airship to burn after the landing instead. However, with the ship already over 12 hours late, Spehl was in the end unable to find an excuse to reset the timer on his bomb".

Now, time bombs in those days weren't that complicated if an expert was to deactivate it, BUT TO SAY THE BOMB MAKER DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO RESET OR TURN IT OFF IS PLAIN SHIT!!

  • i believe there are only 2 survivors alive who were actually on the ship, one was a boy who was dropped from the window, and the other was a german cabinboy. the boy is now an old man living in colorado, and the cabin boy is living back in germany.

  • The 'bomb defusing' scene was really suspenseful when I first saw this movie!

  • I thought they had the technology to colerize that scene

  • What i have never understood here is. The bomb has 2 wires going to a tiny bit of plastic explosives. Gee!! If you pulled out one of the wires you would break the circuit!!! DEAD BOMB!! And Ritter is in the German airforce???

  • that guy reminds me of nenetendonerd11212 alot at 1:06 or 1:005

  • I read that a remake of this was in the works a few years back. Not sure what happened with it. I would love to see a remake of this with a tighter story and today's visual effects. They could re create the climactic moment in every degree of authenticity and detail. Be a great story for the big screen.

  • The German crewman and American sailors acting heroically.

  • The cause of the Hindenburg disaster was NOT sabotage. It was a result of the weather condition during the landing.

  • That's why this is the movie and not the documentry.

  • Not only that, but there was a small gas leak occurring when the ship made a few sharp turns which caused a bracing wire to snap and puncture one of the hydrogen bags near the rear.

When the ropes were dropped for the ground crew to use, the rain soaked them and caused the static electricity that had built up along the hull to go to the ground. The insulting outer-cover of the ship was a kind that remained at high voltage which what resulted in the spark that ignited the fire

  • @151L107 Not really; it was a combination due to a bracing wire snapping from a sharp turn that caused the gas to leak, and a static electricity shock igniting the hydrogen gas. Whatever the case, sources reveal it was indeed an accident.

  • @151L107 it was a spark cause by static electricity which back then nobody had no idea what that was

  • That's 4 trailer demands in 2 weeks how many demands do you but show me some gratitude by colorizing with adobe after effects.

  • how do you think this scne would look in color? (that is if anyone can upload the trailer from the laserdisk verson.)

  • could anyone upload the Theatrical Trailer for The Hindenburg or upload the whole movie from the LaserDisk version? I think that has the non newsreel parts in color.

  • what i am trying to say is the trailer has the climax in color, could anyone upload the trailer please?

  • not to mention the 1985 VHS release i heard on IMDB message boards (where i got all the info from) that it might have the ending in color.

  • Thanks for posting, great movie BTW.

  • leave it to hollywood to distort the realtime. the entire ship burned to the ground in about 30 seconds, yet they stretch out this scene endlessly.

  • True, but remember this movie was made back in the 70's and also there were so many characters loaded into the mix they had to stretch out the timeline in order to show they're fates or the audience would be left scratching they're heads at how they managed in the chaos. It really was ment to give the audience a sense of sadisfaction at each character's certain fate.

  • @zimchar That was just one theory.

  • Thank you very much for posting this sequence.
