  • Another great video, thanks Jared.

  • Thanks! Great video. I really cant wait to see you on video actually having the subjects pose. I am interested in hearing your style of speaking to the subjects to get them to relax, I try to get mine to relax, but it's tough sometimes. Thanks for walking us through that edit as well. Great video! Five minutes, wow....

  • Will this also work while taking high school senior photos? The school I graduated in lets seniors to turn in their own photos for the yearbook. I'd like to help a few of my friends on getting a photo. Will these also work if I put that to practice?

  • @jaredpolin would you recommend the 70 200 for portraits? I use the 24 70.

  • Jared you are not pro bro.

  • Very informative. I appreciate the effort in putting this series together. I've already learned a lot. Thank you.

  • Jared, i've got one big problem with your Screencasts done on your 27" iMac. I always think the mouse you move is MY MOUSE because I watch your videos on original resolution on my 27" iMac ... that's weird :)

  • Looking forward to seeing where you go with this, 5 min thing, Cant wait

  • Great job!!!

  • Thanks Fro!

  • cant wait to see the workflow mate.

  • Why are you saying "like this" when we cant see you!

  • @BentQuarter there was supposed to be video but for some reason it did not record.

  • @JaredPolin Awww man.

  • Nice tips and cool shot.

    get laid-lol

  • it ws a reaLLy 'killer' ////!!!

    background iz 'osum'...!!

    everything is perfect!!

  • Great.

  • I like this idea a lot Jared, it's definitely not something a lot of photographers would care to do.

  • Pretty inspiring!

  • Nice thanks!

  • Go fro...

  • Hi Jared, i still don't understand how to set the focus on the eyes using single and keeping it there. In auto it doesn't usually get the red dot on the eye and if i try in manual i dont ever know if its locked on in the eye. With manual sometimes i think i have the right focus but the picture will not be focused where i thought. Can you do a video on how to manual/auto focus using the metering?

  • Great video!!! I am getting my nikon d7000 this friday can't. wait to try this

  • Bring the "behind the scenes" already! I and many others are looking forward to it.

  • Thank you very much!!

  • This is by far your best idea yet!! I can't wait to see the video!! I think you should do the edit after the shoot so we can see a complete work flow all in one video. Can't wait!!!!

  • The middle one KILLED in color , you may have actually ruined it a bit ( not that it looks bad in b&w)

  • Is he wearing eye-liner?

  • @leo140485 no but i like to lol the one time i wore it.

  • @JaredPolin Btw, you mention in a few of your vids to keep the focus on the eyes... how do you do that? I use Auto-Focus and it kinda selects it's own focus points... if I change it to manual, I can manually move the Focus Point in the Viewfinder, but it doesn't focus the image. I have to use the focus ring... I own a D7000 + 50mm f1.4 and 18-200mm VRII...

  • @leo140485 If you go into AF-Single and than select your own focus points meaning not letting the camera select them than you can lock in where ever you want. I dont shoot in manual focus but I select my focusing points myself to lick them in where I want them. I may make a detailed video about this.

  • @JaredPolin I haven't got my camera with me... I hope that'll make sense when I get home from work lol... Coz I've managed to be able to move the focus points, I half press the shutter, and then the focus point blinks red, but I see no difference... it doesn't adjust to the new focus point... I've been told to focus n recompose, but would prefer to select focus points at times... Would love it if you made a detailed video about this...

  • @leo140485 Have you tried reading the manual of your camera?

  • @SwisssBolla I found out how to do it... I didn't realise there was a button ON the flip switch between AF and MF...

  • @leo140485 That's what I'm saying: the user manual wil show you and explain the function of every single button on your camera. You don't have to "find out" anything.

  • @SwisssBolla If I read the manual, I would've still "found out" that way. But if you knew the answer to my question, then you should put the answer down, or just ignored it. Your comment was more patronising and sarcastic than helpful. Let's face reality, no-one wants to read the manual... Even Jared realises that since he posted up vids in the past for beginners on how to setup their D7000's and D3100's...

  • This is what I'm talkin' about... keep it up!

  • Cant wait for this Jared, good job!

  • How to create a white glow effect in the background? I really like that but I don't know how to do it with basic photograph accessories.

  • @HaWaIiCiNqZeRo i didnt do it with anything, it was part of the background.

  • Tomorrow I will try 5 min portraits using my colleagues :-)

    Thanks alot for this video!

  • @DanielGimbert sweet!!!!

  • Jared, is there a particular order you go through when editing a black and white photo? For example, do you always edit contrast first, then exposure, fill light, etc. I would really like to know what that order is, if there is one. Or does the order even matter?

  • @ThatShaneGuy00 i have no particular order but depending on which sliders you move certain other sliders may need to be tweaked.

  • 7:53 CSI moment.

  • awesome idea, looking forward to these vids! :D

  • Fro Knows Portraits! Period! :)

  • I agree,Jared! A totally killed portrait! I was literally blown away! So intense and dramatic portrait. Love the black and white!

  • wow this was the perfect video! I'm looking forward to next one, with the actual shooting footage.

gr8 stuff and a great idea 4 new series, keep 'em coming.

  • Fro, what would you suggest for a great first portrait lens at around $200? Thank you very much in advance.

  • like wow! Good job once again! Fab

  • I'd appreciate anyone for answering my question.

So, I have in mind to get an allround/portrait-lens. I'm really tired of my 18-55mm lens(though I have an 55-200mm and a 70-300mm), I need something new. My choise is leaning for the Nikon 50mm AF-S f/1.8G or the Nikon 35mm f/1.4G. Which should I get? Which may I have most use for?

  • This is my favorite Fro photo. (the Wins B+W)

  • Sounds great, kinda like Gavin Hoey's "15 min photo challenge". Its very instructive, and i looking forward to it!

  • @aleksandersandstrom gavin does a great job with his photo challenges.

  • Really looking forward to this series. It will be great to see how you manipulate the subject before you manipulate the image to get these photos.

And you get a thumbs up for the Tony Hawk video game reference.

    Big ups from Chicago.

  • I just got a Canon 60D, and sold my old T2i... But I use my "Plastic Fantastic" 50mm f/1.8 for portraits and I love it. The 60D is awesome too.

  • Hurry up and post the 5 min. sessions! Don't wanna wait to see them!

  • i have a nikon D3100 and just bought a 50mm 1.8 but i didnt realize it was a manual focus do u have any tips or tricks about manual focusing or is it just straight forward as it seems. cheers

  • @whitwhitwhitlaw It's just practicing. When a little green dot appears in the lower left corner when you look through the viewfinder then you know that whatever you're focusing on is in focus. So just keep rotating the focus ring till it lights up for a split second. Then you know you're close and you can start twisting the focus ring slowly until the lamp is continuously on. Then hit the shutter button :)

  • @whitwhitwhitlaw It's as straightforward as it seems. Takes a little practice to be quick with it, but it can be very nice.

  • I really like the idea. Waiting for it. Really. Cheers from Poland

  • Getting a 60D with 18-135 and 50mm 1.8 today. Can't wait to take pictures!!! Awesome job Jared, you have taught me a lot!!!

  • @ICanReviewIt great!!! Good luck please sign up for the fro e mail list.

  • @JaredPolin Already have! Read the Capturing Motion ebook. Now I'm waiting for the 5-year plan!

  • can i use 50mm f1.8 lens for portraits?

  • @allensendo yes you can.

  • @allensendo -- it can be a bit fuzzy at F1.8, sharpest at F4 i reckon,

  • Always great with a new FRO video!
