i don't think there'll be a singer / song-writer harpist capable of topping joanna newsom for at least another century or two; the woman is just a genius.
Poor Serafina. She's just a songwriter who plays the harp but now that Joanna Newsom is so popular she'll never get out from under her shadow. And judging from her comments, she's even being faulted for not having the same intricacy as Joanna. Who cares? Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear don't have the same intricacy either, yet I love them both.
We shouldn't compare every harpist with Joanna Newsom. There are lots of harpists out there, who wants to make pop/indie music. (mm, including me:) It's like comparing every indie singer & songwriter women with Björk.
This chick is all right, but she's got nothing on Joanna Newsom. Personally, listening to Serafina is strange for me because I can't disassociate the sound of the harp from Joanna.
I dont care for this womans style at all. But I recognize that others might, so in that sense I'm glad shes doing her thing. That being said...joanna newsom rocks my face.
jesus christ.... this vid makes me sad, she's so average, boring and completly unpleasent, from what i gather. Joanna newsom is utterly amazing, and The Milk Eyed Mender will always be my favorite album of all time becuase its so perfect in every way. This woman is just Salieri to Joanna's Amadeus. actually she's just the scheming maid under Salieri's gaze to Joanna's Amadeus. !1!!! :)
both in combination: the first in the light of the second. It's like, soo weak, which, if she werent nasty could have been sweet...I think it wouldn't have hurt her to learn from Joanna
er, both things: the first in the light of the second. It's sooo weak, which, if she werent nasty could have been sweet...I think it wouldn't have hurt her to learn from Joanna both compositionally and in inspiration
although the guitar can be manipulated ie: different tunings and extra strings ect... so it dosent matter what instrument you play things on... kind of. I can replicate songs on guitar that joanna plays on the harp.
yeah absolutely, with no problem any--even the more "poliphonic" can be easy done on guitar. What i'm saying is that on a keyboard or guitar even a strike of a chord is lasting/sustained and can serve as "pad" behind the lyrics, while in harp calls for rhythm and patterns and has (fortunately) this percussive quality to it.
What i mean is that weak composing can be masked easilly on guitar but immediately becomes obvious on a harp (like in this very video) with sense of scarcity. Joanna is embroidering these intricate interwoven lines on the other hand. *Harpist?Haha, yes, renaissance chromatic--since one month only...
wow thats cool. hmmm i thought it would be a bit of an in-joke as joanna called herself a Harpist lol. well, i could be incredibly ignorant but i guess its harder to bring out an expression in a harp than it is in a guitar as you can slide strings, beat the wood and bend the strings to create some kind of vibrato. but a harp you can only dampen the strings, adjust the pitch and pluck the strings... but correct me if im wrong. :) just check out Kaki King, cus she's so awsome
wow--thanks for sharing: this Kiki girl is so amazingly rhythmic and so funky :))) Some of her figures also are like african muisic! When you said Harpist, i think it's for life: once you get even the slightest feel of how the harp feels there is nothing like it in completeness :D Yes, you're not ignorant: dumpen or release or play with velocities--less gimmicky than the guitar, but even more direct than the piano--nothing inbetween the hand and the string--can transmit the feeling :D
Haha Luke, we've predated this woman's video. i'm making soon another yout. account, i'll send you link then
..also, it's true w. you say, a real feeling can be translated with any instrument. Sometimes limitations can serve as fusssing factor.I always thought the guitar's typical thing also is that it has many notes reachable from a very narrow space--which gives a kinda "synthesys" type of thing, but also a fretted clavichord thing too where we can't have access to all notes at once
ha ha... fussing :) . well you can reach notes on the guitar fairly close together, but even though the guitar is a very cliche instrument these days i find it harder to learn songs quicker on it that i do the piano, which ive only played for a year, while ive played the guitar for 6 years.
its almost impossible to make cluster-chords on the guitar without manipulating the tuning in some way, and as a solo instrument its very very hard to create the two voices needed to have some kind of balance. Its a lot harder than people, not necessarily you, think to play the guitar PROPERLY.
I just bought a 12 string, and its a lot harder to play than a conventional guitar.
You got it cluster chords! that's like one of the greatest freedoms of piano/harp--once hand can go three notes of C the other, 3 from Am and such things give infinity of moods/soounds. Oh, 12 string kind of like the lute in a way but hardermetal.they use it for these lush chords in recordings, but for sure one can experiment! If you like to play lute renaissance stuff tune the 3th G string(G s.lol) flat and you have a myriad of database on the web of music never played since 500 years!
I copy this and am going to find them--at least on midi, if nothing else! I know i love Chopin very very much but never listened enough to have even the vaguest refference of his works. The other day i found this database of midi files and it had quite a few Chopin(good thing is that you have the score with the midi thing). I'll write you here a msg and give u URL. goin' to the profile :D
i think you're wrong. i think this is wonderful. she's not comparing herself to joanna newsom, but intelligently discussing the differences; actively promoting the difference, keen not to be lazily labelled as simply another female harpist. she suggests that they both play the same instrument and that is where the similarites end. i think she is an extremely talented songwriter and this song is utterly beautiful. so no, i don't think it's a joke.
See that harp she's playing? I own that now. It's a beautiful Venus Penti GC. I had the opportunity to hear her play it at Chapter in Cardiff before she handed it over, and she showed me what it was capable of! Brilliant stuff. Do a search for 'Serafina Steer Tiger' to see clips of her playing my favourite track on the Venus Penti.
Sef rocks and is great on synths, bass and backing vocals with John Foxx And The Maths !

actually i watched more from her and: same here, just like you, i don't get it...
i mean, i guess i don't get it...lol
May be in the end it IS some sort of a joke?

hey thanks for the reply!
I just read my post and im quite proud of it!
What is it that you dont get?
is it her playing or her resentment of Joanna?

(but then those ppl are too proud for that-getting inspired openly):harp
is instrument where we don't have a sustained "pad".
One who composes on it has to be very aware and mindful
of full/empty & paterns, proportions and ways of spacing
the notes(and of course J does this so beutifully!)Compositional
creativity is a must because only chords, as in keys or guitar
don't do it. Dream-weaving skills are obligatory:D
p.s.oh, and some genuine passion wouldn't hurt either!

Do you listen to Debussy or Ravel or Chopin or even Rachmaninoff by any chance? My favorite pieces of music in the world are: 'Jeux d'eau' by Ravel
'Ballade No. 4 in F minor' by Chopin
'Claire de Lune' by Debussy
and
'Études-Tableux Op. 33: No. 5.' by Rachmaninoff.
Hunt the last one down as i guarentee you will love it.
