  • American laziness has no limits.

  • I will respond to this video that old lady is so ignorant that at her age by listening to her voice she can find her way out if a paper bag.but you know what they say ignorance and stupidity is a disease,I guess she suffers from both. No offense.I am glad and proud that I am learning portuguese and maybe later in life, that way I do not suffer from what I call "STUPIDITIS".

  • It's ridiculous, I live in Poland and here ATMs have 3 languages: Polish, English and German. It's a standard to have a choice among the most popular languages in a given country (Technically very little people speak English or German natively here). The conservative right usually is very protective of their what most would call cultural and lingual identity even if it the States don't have an offical language. It's funny how it works, but what can you do?

  • Haha! Wow, those Americans would FREAK OUT in Canada...Maybe this is why they'd freak: youtube dot com/watch?v=jr3_hNuob-g&feature=player_embedded

You don't want a sitch like ours where BILLIONS are wasted on "Official Bilingualism"...and the GOV forces you to do so. It sucks.

  • She is correct. If the country was founded by English then that should be the language that is spoken by everyone officially.

  • People just dont respect the language of the People, In the US american Speak english and that should be prioritized

  • The only reason for that is because Americans are lazy, and have the mind set of, "This is America, speak English." Why is it that students in Europe and Asia can speak languages OTHER than their native language AND English, but here nobody knows or even refuses to try? I am a proud bilinguist, and I can honestly say that learning a different language has really opened my world further than my imagination. Wake up, people. We arent the only ones on the globe.

  • why she has to push a button to hear English? Blame GREEDY Corporate U.S.A for that. They are catering to whom will be bringing the dough to them. I'm Hispanic and I learned English here. Every non-English speaker should learn the main language of this country, but Businesses and enterpreneurs should learn Spanish if they hope comunicate with their target market 15 to 20 years from now.

  • my family was German so I was raised bilingual and because of the WWII shame I was taught to speak in the house only...

the good thing about the shame of WWII was that I never had to be included in that obnoxious group of folks whining about this shit. If I am on a cell phone in public and argue with my family in German, wherever I am, the crowd goes silent because of images of Hitler screaming make that rational and I shut up and get it but they bitch and people feel bad.

  • and not to go there but my family died to save Jews from Nazis and Americans call me a Nazi all the time because I am German and I went back where I came from... the Holocaust was vile and inhuman but my family died because of the Nazis too and I never bitched.

Plus, the Spaniards forced Spanish on the Natives of Mexico, Central and South American natives and so it is odd to hear that as valid.

You all live on stolen land... Natives are the only people entitled to cry racism and want rights

  • Me too, Jonathan. What the hell? F-ing bigots.

  • @oliviathefolkie

She is not a bigot. She is simply concerned that the language that her country was founded on is not the main language anymore. Not everyone can learn another language and can only speak the language that they were brought up in.

  • @clergame And that language is an option. This country does not have a national language and many people need the option of speaking other languages. So we should be accommodating. There is nothing wrong with recognising that not everyone speaks English. It's all part of embracing diversity.

  • @oliviathefolkie

But everyone should learn the language of the country they are living in.

  • @clergame A good suggestion, but for the fact that there is no official language of the United States.

  • @clergame Whether she's a bigot or not is irrelevant. "[..] the language that her country was founded on..[...]" this is extremely incorrect: 1) The constitution was written in English, but there is no say about the supriority of it in the administrative institutions; 2) The constitution clearly protects the rights of the minority from the majority. e.g. It's like saying just because the US is majorly Christian it's a Christian nation/state, and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

  • interesting...the answer should be that "America" has no official language...sad that she, as an American, doesn't even know that about her own country...

  • send the old lady over see were he comes from

  • Perhaps the worry is that instead of urging the newcomers to learn English, we are enabling them to continue their 'ignorance'.

    I'm puzzled as you are.

Maybe trying to find (not even rational) reasons for this crowd reaction is the wrong way to go: maybe psychologically people are against that which is not 'normal' and when things are different (say custom of eating) people thing it's _morally_ wrong (hence the strong response). Some studies hint to me that this is what could be going on.
