go Violas!! the UVU school symphony...we are playing this next semester. How exciting. :D thanks for posting this. I will have to listen to other recordings too.
Stunning performance by a group of fresh and talented artists ! I found here all I like about classical music : sharp, frisky, energic, expressive, inspiring and moving. A dream come true... Thank you very much for posting this engchi93 !
I guess you never heard Vanska's, Segerstam's, or Bernstein's performances then have you? Because they blow Szell out of the water. Szell was a competent conductor, but he has been bettered by the younger generations.
Well, I have a lot of diferent performances of this symphony, but nome of then is those you indicate me. However, I know the Berstein's performance and I believe that Szell performance still deserves the gold medal.
I have heard Vanska and Bernstein' s performances. But Szell's performance with the Concertgebouw in 1964 is the best. Sorry. I beg to differ on your comment.
@jprmp I've heard them all and Okko Kamu's 1965 performance with the Berlin Philharmonic sounds best to my own ears...check it out sometime, you'll like it ;-))
I love this orchestra, ambitious and youthfull. Little story: when Sir Thomas Beecham wanted a new piece for his orchestra he phoned with "Old Sib" and aften he becames what he wanted!
Epic? Magical? I don't know if any of the so far coined words could come close to the emotions this can give!

Sibelius' music still sounds fresh, and transcends time as well as borders.

The greatest Sibelius conductor of the 20th century was, for me, Sir John Barbirolli.......with his Halle Orchestra of course!!!

Great performance!
But, the best of all is the old one directed by George Szell.
:-))

Yeh, that recording is legendary. I also like the equally famous Colin Davis/Boston and Ashkenazy/Philharmonia recordings.
