That's incredible!. Thanks for sharing. I've had Savannahs, Asian Water and Ornate Nile monitors. No matter how hard I worked, I could never get the Ornate to tame down. I had to watch it closely every time I got in the cage. After developing infections from bites a few times, I finally gave him up. The savannahs and water monitors was like handling a dog or cat...or even Larry here. Completely trustworthy.
TAME!!!!!!!!! I can not beleave my eyes. I have a standerd nile and he don't run anymore. He fights its gonna be a slow process to get him as tame as this one lol.
@honeybee7700 Animal Planet would have you believe so! I understand there are a small number of invasive nile monitor lizards in FL, but not many. The ones you see on the Animal Planet episodes are staged. They're not really "wild monitors", they are just pets that the crew followed around with cameras for a couple days to create footage to tell their story. And if they can't find any real "wild" monitors to film, and they have to use staged footage with captives, you have to wonder...
@xxxxxcuterobynxxxx No they usually do not. Larry is a very special exception to the rule. Please don't count on taking home a nile monitor and having him turn out like Larry.
That is amazing, what you can do, with Larry! Mine was handlable the first yr. I got him back in 2003; Gradually he got nasty; when he got to about 16 ", Teddy (my, Nile) was not handlable ; He started biting when you try to handle him; so, I put him in a enclosure that is 6 ft long, by four ft wide, and four ft high; He has a large shelf on one end about three feet high from the ground; for basking; a big tub on the other end with water; at seven yrs old, he is content and healthy; 4 foot.
What would you say is the best process for tameing a nile monitor, mines a work in progress and is slowly working but maybe a few new ideas and methods could help
@Carothis88 There is no substitute for years of handling. They are very intelligent animals and it takes time for them to learn that people are a positive part of their environment.
My advice is no. In a few years you will be out of high school and possibly moving away to college or finding your own place to live. It is not an easy time to have a 4-5 year old nile monitor and there are not a lot of great homes willing to take them. There are also very few colleges or apartments that will let you move in with giant lizards the size of niles. You should really have a long term plan so your nile doesn't end up at a rescue.
Wow. My monitor is actually extremely tame. For a Nile Monitor that is. Nowhere near Larry here but calm. I just can't put a harness on her because she will whip at you when you try to pick her up. But I walk slow to her and rub her back and she arches her back like a cat and I can pick her up. She is very calm when you hold her. Feeding can be expensive but I found a cheap alternative. Hot dogs. Boil 3-4 hot dogs and let them cool off and put them in her cage and she will eat them without a pr
I LOVE MONITORS... well i just love reptiles... but i getting monitor for my birthday :) i forgot what kind but the get just little bit bigger than a savanah monitor... i for at pet paradise crawling across the floor SO CUTE! he was friendly too
@637dan I do not recommend a large monitor for a first monitor, plese think it through cause I doubt you will be able to handle it. Go to repticzonedotcom and search the monitor forums, those people will change your mind just from reading threads.
Wow what a beautiful moniter how big is he and also how old? He looks really healthy u must take really good care of him I wanted a moniter but I couldn't aford the amount of food they eat so I got a crested gecko but I love my little bud :)
Niles are perfectly fine if trained by someone whos willing to put the time and effort in so forget wiki but if ur nto willing to house and take care of them right then dont get them they deserve a happy life as all animals
Hey man, I just came across this video and realized you're the same guy who was on fox43 news the other month. Props to you for taking in Larry. He's an awesome lizard. I know most are no where near this tame. I love monitors and currently keep a pair of Yellow Ackies. They're a wee bit smaller than Larry, lol. Good luck with the sanctuary.

hahaha Larry is so cool! My pitbulls name is Larri, he is a spitfire with energy playful and obedient knows commands i mean damn perfect dog! However he isnt a punk. weirdly enough my computers name is Daniel PUTER, um...anyways Ur Nile is so cool! One of a kind, no doubt u try to tame a Nile or ANY monitor they are aggressive and vicious but Larry is so cool!
I remember walking my brother's nile Gnarly (as in nyarlathotep) down the street when it was about 2 feet from tale to mouth. I was about 8 at the time and the neighbors gave me quite a look.
what a lucky beast.... and a handsome looking monitor at that. who ever had him was lucky as heck to be able to tame him this much. every nile i meet is all GRRR aghh lol
@rockgor This is actually an Ornate Monitor (Varanus Ornatus) and not the infamous Common Nile (Varanus Niloticus). Ornate monitors like this one can be among the most well adjusted and friendly of large lizards. They are more closely related to the gigantic Black Throat Monitor and are typically just as mellow. But its true that Nile monitors are usually lousy pets and rarely ever tame down.
how do u get niles to be this nice? at my local reptile shop they have a 5 ft one and its mean as hell lol and the baby niles are mean too...i was about to buy a water monitor since they get way nicer and i was gonna buy it for 100 but then they sold it right when i walked in the door :( butnow im looking into niles but everyone i talked to about thems ay they get extremely mean lol how do u tame them down?
Don't expect your Nile to turn out like Larry. Expect him to be a Nile Monitor. If you aren't ready for a large aggressive lizard, please don't get one. It took years of regular handling before Larry settled down and there's no guarantee that others will do the same. But I've heard of a number of cases where regular handling has helped.
@rugbyman2000 true true...but im gonna wait till they get more water monitor babies and maybe when i move out of my parents house ill try a nile monitor
Man those guys are beasts. I currently have a green iguana and i've tamed her already. She is about 5 years old and counting. I have raised multiple iguanas, and would you say this experience would help raising a nile monitor?
I don't recommend buying nile monitors because most will not turn out like Larry. But if you are willing to give it a try, please adopt, and be in it for the long haul.
I took in a Nile This Morning! he was found abandoned in a childrens park in Michigan... . he was going to be put down yesterday but we got there in time! He was put in a steal cage with a shallow pan that had not been changed in days and had only been fed once in like 5 days... but to their credit they had been actively trying to find a rescue ( and one contacted me).. he go's to the vet next week and then off to a good home !
@fattcamp Great job, glad you got to him in time! A couple months ago we got a call from the local police about a "nile monitor" that turned up in someone's driveway. But it turned out to be a tegu!
Excellent example of what is capable from a Nile Monitor.. I have had many of these lizards, and my favorite also was my Burundi(Ornate) Nile... his name was Godzilla, and was 7'3" when he passed... Tame as a dog, and ate boiled chicken from my hand with no gloves...!! Absolutely NOT a good lizard for a beginner, but a great lizard if you have the room, time, patience, and ability to see this pet through and have the education on the breed...!!! R.I.P Godzilla, and Long Live Larry...!!!
@storeythor Glad to hear from other people who have done a great job raising nile monitors. I can't recommend them as pets for most people, because the vast majority of people I've met are excited to bring them home, but give up on them in the first few years, leaving one of the world's biggest lizards homeless just as he gets close to full size. But I've also heard a number of great reports from people who've gone the distance and had great experiences. How many years did you have yours?
Not for most people. They are not as friendly as Larry without many years of handling. It's better to start with other reptiles like corn snakes, geckos and bearded dragons before you try monitor lizards.
Just keep in mind that monitors may live 3 of 4 times longer than bearded dragons and get many times bigger. They are amazing animals if you have a spare bedroom for them and 15-20 years to commit to a giant lizard.
the nicest nile iv ever seen ( and iv seen more then one ^^)
my next monitor is 100% a nile but i know very well that thoose monitors r very aggresiv because i got one some years ago and he was a very painfull lizard ( ask my hand ) well wish me luck ...normal it doesnt matter if my one get harm like larry itzn wild and hunter animal but it would be nice
mmh my savannah luv cats aswell .... he hunt them every time he comes out hehe
how did you train him not to be aggressive? I've raised green iguanas and would like to get a monitor lizard. Iguanas aren't too aggressive or too big for me. I like big lizards but just so long as I can train them not to be aggressive. Anyhow some training tips would be much appreciated...
@you777777777777 y tha fuck is u tellin me that u prick.. i kno thats fuckin egg yoke u morron..i was tellin sumbodi wat it was b4 yo gay ass had to open ur mouf and get it twisted homo
do u have a dad nigger? if yes, is he in prison. fucking piece of poop, its spelled "yolk" not yoke but oh wait, that yoke was used to tie you up to the cart that brought you here from Africa, lol
you are absolutely stupid, enough to qualify for that card and I am not even white, just to let you know. I could be anything but items like you are a breed apart, so yeah that term is fine suited, stupid negro. I reserve this term only for those who are here from African heritage and are stupid. People in Africa have culture, I respect them not apes like you who just know "ass", "shyt" ,"gay". go to school
@you777777777777 u r so stupid, not to mention how dumb u made urself sound on that last comment..give urself a pat on the back y dont u..regaurdless if ur white or not u still is a racist prick..its really crazy how u jumped from confusin me with some else to callin out racial slurs..i guess the internet bring out plp true colors..lmao the only problem is they dont have the balls to say it in a blaack mans face..and dont tell me u will becuz i know the answer and the results..
@you777777777777 lets get one thing st8.. u message me 1st and the thing is u replied to the wrong person..so u started it and im going to finish it so leave it alone..
Not to like prove anybody wrong or anything, but every animal has its own personality, so the thing about most nile monitors being aggressive is sort of wrong.
my sav runs the house and it only likes me lol my dog and cat run from it lol the other day she scared my dog into getting up off his bed and she got in it lol andf i have a doberman
my nile monitor, is a regular nile and doesnt have an aggressive bone in him, he is as friendly as larry but i cant wait till he gets as big as him, that guy is awesome!!!
Are you sure he's not a Water Monitor? They can look alot alike and the tameness and placement of the "nostrils" are more indicative of a Water Monitor.
Helooks like an ornate nile which looks like a water monitor whereas a normal nile has a blue tongue and ornates have pink. :) Ornate niles are generally more like water monitors in regard to temperment and behavior??? They are very closely related.
What else do you feed him other then eggs? Just curious, I had a baby Nile that I fed crickets but he didn't make it to get big. Pinched himself in some rocks :( I had him in a Viquarium half water half land.
I have to disagree with larry being the friendliest ornate nile.. only because i have a 14 yr old male who is the friendliest monitor ive ever met.His basking area is between 100-115 - his favarite place.awsome vi by the way!
nice nile mate ive had my nile now for 3 months and hes 4 monts old . ive only had him out twice and he never like me picking him up but when hes out and i put him in the barth hes really good but other then that hes always runing and hideing when i enter the room so wot would u recomend ? let him get use 2 u then start handling or or all together ? thanks
What do u do to tame them i have a small nile monitor and i wanna be able to tame it so it doesnt bite or eat me alive when it gets bigger and how should i treat it
You was sum salt with those eggs?

you777777777777 1 year ago
@you777777777777 oh no,,not the nigger card...i hate redneck pieces of shyt like urself..go eat a dick and then fuk ya self with it..haHA
deandre2420 1 year ago
@deandre2420
you are absolutely stupid, enough to qualify for that card and I am not even white, just to let you know. I could be anything but items like you are a breed apart, so yeah that term is fine suited, stupid negro. I reserve this term only for those who are here from African heritage and are stupid. People in Africa have culture, I respect them not apes like you who just know "ass", "shyt" ,"gay". go to school

dfgrow 2 years ago
Not to like prove anybody wrong or anything, but every animal has its own personality, so the thing about most nile monitors being aggressive is sort of wrong.

Are you sure he's not a Water Monitor? They can look alot alike and the tameness and placement of the "nostrils" are more indicative of a Water Monitor.
galvr4 2 years ago
Helooks like an ornate nile which looks like a water monitor whereas a normal nile has a blue tongue and ornates have pink. :) Ornate niles are generally more like water monitors in regard to temperment and behavior??? They are very closely related.
mudt76 2 years ago
alright cool thanks
Snakes4Life21 2 years ago
he is awesome would it be better to get a nile monitor or a tegu?
Snakes4Life21 2 years ago
Most Niles get too big and won't turn out as friendly as Larry. I'd go with a smaller monitor or tegu species.
rugbyman2000 2 years ago
DO NOT GET A NILE. They can take good care of him cuz there an organization but you need alot to take care of one. Tegu is a much better choice
daRobanater7217 2 years ago
OMG :D He is very tame !
I love Larry :D
Denaj15 2 years ago
What else do you feed him other then eggs? Just curious, I had a baby Nile that I fed crickets but he didn't make it to get big. Pinched himself in some rocks :( I had him in a Viquarium half water half land.
Tintamar5678 2 years ago
Rodents, fish, bugs, canned food, vitamins. We try to mix it up a good bit.
rugbyman2000 2 years ago
How much of the variety of foods does he eat? Is it expensive to feed him?
Tintamar5678 2 years ago
Yeah it adds up. Nile monitor lizards are not good pets for most people.

nice nile mate ive had my nile now for 3 months and hes 4 monts old . ive only had him out twice and he never like me picking him up but when hes out and i put him in the barth hes really good but other then that hes always runing and hideing when i enter the room so wot would u recomend ? let him get use 2 u then start handling or or all together ? thanks
thechronic100 2 years ago
well it isnt that much like a bunny or a cat they need to be handled alot then he will get used to you. Try putting a t shirt into hes cage also
palleruuslarsen1 2 years ago
What do u do to tame them i have a small nile monitor and i wanna be able to tame it so it doesnt bite or eat me alive when it gets bigger and how should i treat it
XXsilentsnipe357XX 2 years ago
There are no guarantees with niles, but lots of handling is key.
rugbyman2000 2 years ago
how do you cage him? dimensions?
snowboardfreak69 2 years ago
Larry has a 6x8 setup, although he gets the run of the place when we're around to keep an eye on him.
