If I may be allowed to elaborate on not taking stones from a stream. It seems unusual but the stones actually soak up the water. When heated it will evaporate faster than the gasses can escape the stone thus causing them to explode in varied strengths or at minimum split. I tried it once just to see what would happen. Staying a good distance from the fire obviously.
I would add to wipe the hot rocks briefly with moist grass to clean them. Also to have a spare piece of bark to cover the top of your water so it all doesn't steam away.
It wouldn't make a noticeable difference in the amount of water you have in the end. As part of a science experiment back in middleschool I boiled water in a pot until there was no more left. It took an EXTREMELY long time. It wasn't even that big of a pot.
isn't there a cleaner way to boil the rocks; i mean when you take them out of the ashes and you drop them directly into the water isn't that putting ashes into the water? is that safe?
now this is something interesting and potentially useful. gawletap obviously has a wealth of outdoor knowledge. sorry for my negative comment on the water filter.
Maybe you could wipe the ash off with the nearby grass first?

the natives here in Canada used to use birch bark, and preferred this method over the European settlers heavy metal pots

Willow is filled with Salisyllic acid (sp) which is the natural ingredient in asperin. You get a pain killer with that sterile water!
