a lot of people say genres and especially subgenres are ridiculous. but personally i see it as a great reference. for example, i love certain electronica artists, but i've had to search high and low for artists that suit my fancy. but then i found out that most of my favorite artists fall into what can be called IDM or intelligent dance music, and now i can more music i like using this term. genres are your friend.
Partially why it was called IDM because pretty much only intelligent people listened to it. Also, the structure, beat and feel is much more complex than regular dance music.
Honestly though, I kind of have to agree with this whole "intelligent people only" thing. Not to be elitist or anything, but other people just doesn't seem to get it.. My more.. smart friends do however, and love it. Maybe it's because it stimulates the brain more than general quarter note bass kicks.
Great tracks from U-ZIQ. Bit of an excorcist vide to the video. Love it. Though how fucking condescending is the term "intelligent dance music?" Are we seriously saying we've never met a cunt that listens to this sort of thing?
heh not a fan of this video clip at all, cheesiest video ever.
Best part about idm is that there is no real definition of it. And if you get deep into it all the artists are so different from one another. Whereas most electronic music is built upon structure and definitive rules, which make their genres work. idm is the opposite, it's like the freeform jazz of the electronic world.
@BLCEKV - Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre and Squarepusher are Warp Rec. masters. I give you a songs for each: BoC "Turquoise Hexagon Sun", Aphex "Milkman", SquareP. "My red hot car" - Autechre - Cipater.
@XJproto You should look further into the genre. Aphex Twin is far from being a pioneer. He's just one of the more mainstream musicians in his genre(s).
@karaloca yeah, Intelligent Dance Music is a crap name for two main reasons:
1. Putting 'intelligent' in a genre name is pretentious as fuck.
2. A lot of IDM isn't dance music in the slightest.
That said, it's one of my favourite genres. Even though the term may sound stupid, just ignore what it stands for and just use IDM as an arbitary definition for music such as Aphex Twin, Autechre and the like.
WOW! I haven't heard of IDM until today! I've heard of almost everything, from House to Trance to Electronic to Ambient, Electronic, Drums & Bass, ... BUT NOT IDM!
I love how everyone argues about genres and classifications of music. To me, there is 2 kinds of music, listenable and not.
If it has a beat i can dance/headbang/trip out to, then I like it. Even ambient music without a beat sounds good when i'm in certain moods. Stop arguing about what to call it and listen to it, lol
@StarHarvestOfficial haha that's how new genres evolve. Early Dubstep was like DNB but with 2x slower beat, Drum and bass is a more rhytmic Jungle, Jungle is less agressive Hardcore etc etc.
@pheaktor yeah but that's like making a new genre of heavy metal for every different distortion petal... I mean, dubstep has a lot more elements than just dnb in half time, wobble bass, hip hip elements, loud dissonant sound effects. I agree that experimentation is how genres evolve, but this genre doesn't appear to be evolved enough to be considered its own genre IMO.
@throughtheskies lately the "new genre" trend has gone mad, dubstep itselfs or drum and bass has like 30 subgernes each so it's basically what you have said :P (i'm reffering to clownsteps etc. which often are reffered as stanalone genres)
and the IDM isn't a new genre, just lately "refreshed".
@pheaktor Drum and bass is actually rather simple in its main subgenres. Further in, it's just separated by small beat pattern differences within a main pattern style. "IDM" is a rather close relative to experimental Dnb. It's considered in the Braindance subcategory.
Don't get me STARTED on how branched House is.
Dubstep used to be a darker triphop, until the kiddies picked up the wub and Ableton from bassline electro. Classifying it based on how much wub or screeching it has should be enough
@ReconUnit415 i'm not sure what the point of all this category and subcategory is. i can appreciate broad genres for the sake of communication, but I think we can leave all the nuances to music historians.
@ReconUnit415 Triphop has a different background from Dubstep. Dubstep originated from 2-step, UK Garage, and dub. All of these except dub originated from Jungle. Drum and bass subgenres aren't separated by the beat, but by the melody.
IDM is quite interesting though, but it seems like it can be a hit or miss.
@canadia7x It was really hard to convey what I was trying to explain with the small character limit they give to you. Dubstep is really a mish mash of a few genres, but yes, it has its roots is Garage.
Drums separate dnb as much as melodies do. On the surface, it's pretty obvious liquid is different from techstep, but when you go to tech and neuro, it gets complicated. The majority of dnb may be based on the 2step, but the differences in drums does make an impact into how it's categorized.
@ReconUnit415 Oh, I see. I don't listen to tech or neuro that much so I guess I didn't notice the difference. Yeah, most of my listening is liquid. Your comment about Dubstep is also true. Most dubstep is just Brostep these days
@ReconUnit415 dont forget that old dubstep also had elements of dub/reggae in it. which only a couple of artists kept intact, on some albums, such as rusko and skream.
@pheaktor drum and bass is jungle with more emphasis on the kick. It also tends to have more complex melodies, but the separation is all in the beat. Early dubstep was more triphop than anything else. Although it was really good then - the main difference from today's version.
@artemvyrtosu I'm pretty sure Apex Twin started before this "genre" was even talked about, and I've never heard him call himelf IDM. He referes to himself as Experimental Drum and Bass in intrerviews.
Thestsocrates ur right about the movement part but u do have to realize they do have diffrent sounds jazz wouldent be called techno and EDM has its own sound just like IDM has its sound
IDM is a garbage elitist term applied to garbage music that has been cast aside by the real devotes of EDM. This could just as easily be placed as DnB or Ambeient people who spend time giving labels to things are the ones who ruin the movement

The range of post-techno styles to emerge in the early 1990s were described variously as art techno, ambient techno, intelligent techno, and electronica. In America the latter term is now used by the music industry as a catchall to describe EDM and its many derivatives.
Intelligent dance music (commonly IDM) is a term that describes an electronic music genre that emerged in the early 1990s at the end of the British rave era. The genre is influenced by a wide range of musical styles particularly electronic dance music (EDM) such as Detroit Techno. Stylistically, IDM tends to rely upon individualistic experimentation rather than on a particular set of musical characteristics.
@TipsyCleavagePenguin idm is basically an umbrella term that takes influence from many genres and can encompass anything from breaks, glitch, ambient, acid, trip-hop, abstract etc. idm is just another way to say experimental electronica (which it should be called btw). compare 'idm' artists μ-Ziq, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Kettel, Plaid, Squarepusher, Aphex, V Snares, Proem, Nautilis, Arovane, Beefcake and they all have their own sound and structuring and they're experimental in nature.
a lot of people say genres and especially subgenres are ridiculous. but personally i see it as a great reference. for example, i love certain electronica artists, but i've had to search high and low for artists that suit my fancy. but then i found out that most of my favorite artists fall into what can be called IDM or intelligent dance music, and now i can more music i like using this term. genres are your friend.
