I would like to find where you live and kick your ass for abusing that truck man. You must've been born into a chevy family because us REAL mopar enthusiasts dont treat our vehicles like that. God help that poor trailduster.
I don't think i've ever heard anybody refere to a Trailduster or Ramcharger as an SUV before. Around here they're for sale all the time. We use them hard, because thats literally what these beasts were made for. They were purely manufactured for the purpose of people to buy them and have fun with them off road style. They aren't useful like a truck and they aren't good on fuel like a car. This is what they are about. And they are amazing at it.
@tommartyn That's what they are classified as. I have always wanted one, but because I'm in college, that is not going to happen for a while. They don't build them anymore, and every time one goes to the scrap yard, there is one less out there to buy.
well... when they were sold back in the day, they were classified as station wagon's i believe. Though of course they are just short trucks with no bed, and a convertable cap. SUV is a way newer term. 90's and up. This beast is a 75.
They haven't built these things since 81. 81-93 was a newer body style, and not nearly as cool. don't have removable tops... and the styling is texas style or something...
I sold this to a guy who's going to fix it up. He was happy.
@tommartyn From what I can tell they were short-cab trucks with no back glass and a custom camper shell that in the early years covered the cab and cargo area and in later years the rear passenger/cargo area. Enter the redesigned K5 Blazer in 1992 with no removable top, then the Tahoe in 95 which screwed the whole thing up by collapsing the 2 door market.
The ramchargers/traidusters are shorter then the shortest shortbed trucks they had available, and there is no bed really, its all part of the body. From 74-80 the whole top came off, all the way up to the windshield, and from 81-93 the tops didn't come off at all. The chevy's and gmc's were different.
The ramcharger removable top is a heavy all steel (except for the liftgate above the tailgate) beast. Not a camper shell, its designed to honestly look like part of the truck.
thats so sad. those traildusters are SO FUCKING RARE. let me buy it so i can give it a nice home. your an idiot, go do that to a shitty chevy or ford. theyre both dime a dozen.
yeah, but fords seriously suck, and chevys are just a dime a dozen like you said, i don't really dig them at all. These things are great. and it doesn't matter that its a trailduster. it is exactly the same as a ramcharger. so really, its not anything special. and since plymouth didn't make trucks. this really is only a dodge. with the plymouth name on it. so only the fact that it says plymouth is rare. its just a ramcharger. But it is true, i don't see any of these around anymore.
well, its sort of been resting for a while. it needs a donor manual trans/transfercase because of a broken trans mount. unfortunatly its part of the cast iron casing.... but its patiently waiting. beleive me man, as soon as i get that fixed there will be more videos for sure! its a crazy vehicle!
well, its got some weird issues. no brakes, some electrical stuff. possibly no carborator right now, and possibly some broken lights. but it was on the road not too long before these videos. it was an awesome vehicle to drive on road. hope fully that will happen again someday.
oh yeah! all the way from the tailgate to the windshield. and its better then a blazer, because the 80's ones atleast only come off up to the cab, and they have these stupid big tailgates on them, they suck.
yeah, its sporting some power steering. but someone put that 318 in it at some point, and the powersteering pump is very crooked, so under crazy circumstances the belt will fly off some times, and maybe its not as tight as it needs to be. i hate american front axles with ujoints in them. wobbeling around when you steer all the way. the old Willys Jeep, and toyota solid axles with CV joints are the best. smooth motion, not violent bucking. i have a 74 dodge without power steering.
You'll have to punish the hell out of that Dodge to kill it. Looks like its seen hell too. Those were the years when you didn't have Japanese or Chinese parts, but good American quality. Just do that in a Toyota!
i hate to say it man..... but i have! and the i still drive it on the road! 83 toyota pickup 4WD. done it to some other toyotas as well... they love it! the one, rusted in half, and still took it!! the trailduster broke from this actually not this time, but a bit later. first the engine mounts, then the transmission mount actually broke on the transmission. cast iron cracked off. can't drive it now. the engine hits the firewall.
Couple cans of Krylon would not hurt...maybe a 'Mad Max' sticker on the back....this looks like the car I saw in some movie that was used to check on the bodies locked in a farmhouse?
i think that was a big high lift jack slamming into a random 2 barrel carburator... there was some stuff in there we probably should have taken out...
yeah, its both. it might not come across good on video, but if you heard it in person you can tell. its unbeleiveable that it hasn't broken yet. sometimes we just take it to the maximum rpm's it will go to and hold it there, then drop the clutch. its amazing! sounds like people hitting anvels with hammers.
I meant to tell you a few months ago- i found a pretty nice Tduster grill in a junk yard.. The hood was stuck so I have to back with a torch to get it. Those Traildusters must be rare. All you see on Ebay is Ramchargers. Maybe too late to restore the one in the video, though. Keep up the good times.
Thanks man! this stuff is alot of fun, i'm always glad when there's a video camera around to capture this stuff. did you see the grill? its from a scrap yard, from some 71 dodge truck. all i have to do now is drill three or four holes, and put the plymouth emblem from the smashed on on there. and paint some of the grill black like the traildusters. and its back to normal... almost.
Sweet dude! Awesome watching and hearing you revv that old Dodges v8 hard! Also some hardcore mudding too! Nice job of causing the exhaust to smoke too, especially after hitting the big puddles!
Thanks! yeah, the smoke was pretty cool. it somehow traveled with the trailduster, cool shit. i don't know how the engine can take it. especially with all the mud that is being sucked into the carburator. its alot!
