The two things that I'll always remember from that race: that I actually thought Ralf was killed and the ridiculous delay of the medical staff in reaching his car. Seeing this video still gives me that same lump in my throat.
@TheSpitfire6 I don't know about you, but a lot of people call the TRACK "Indy", had it been Spa, I would have put Spa, not Indy... I know it was Formula 1, I drove 900 miles to watch the races a couple of times, and have sat up into the early morning hours to catch it on tv........not trying to be a smart ass, just had to say it. thanks for viewing.
This reminds me of how the F1 drivers were in awe on the Indy drivers earning points went to Monza and scared the bejesus out of all of the european drivers as they were driving 40 mph faster down the straights than them. The europeans all said this is too fast. Long live the true racers of INDY, Wheldon won twice and placed second twice without the a tenth place car. F1 is not that great for race fans. You see the car every 1.5 minutes and that is all. I love racing.
Thanx very much for posting this !! It shows how the atmosphere of a motor race can change so fast from 'really exciting' to 'almost tragic' in a hearbeat.. Poor Ralf !! So glad he recovered from his spinal injuries.. he could easily have been paralysed after such an awful shunt.. Your camera is a lot more telling in comparison to the somewhat synthesized TV coverage we are all used to.. Cheers & bfn RX
the guys in red with the black lines on their uniforms are the only Indy safety workers there. They fall under FIA control for the GP and that slowed the reaction time big time. A second medical car at F1 "pit in" would have prevented them having to do an entire lap to get to the crash site. here is a idea of the Indy safety team. /watch?v=eOmk3pSiUso
nice capture, i was also very glad when i saw him moving (i was watching on TV live), one thing i never understood though was even though his visor was broken how come its impossible to see his eyes/face? surely there was some light in there because it was a very sunny day :S
its truly outstanding how these cars can take such huge impacts and such high speeds.. yet if our normal care were to drive like that itd probably shatter into pieces
@Nickomfacc When he came to a stop, his back was hurt, but he was talking on the radio. Maybe they realized he was ok, and then had to drive the medical vehicle all the way around.. who knows what they were thinking, but it sure pissed off a lot of people.
@Nickomfacc it's a rule that the medical team has to complete a full lap if a driver crashes in the last corner. I don't know what the hell they were thinking as they decided that...
@ididi9 they're cheering when they find out he is okay, not at the crash. Additionally, the US GP was a pretty international event, lots of people from South America there. Too bad Michelin ruined it, maybe not the best track but still better than Middle Eastern F1 circuits.
@ididi9 that is so damn true!! the people that cheer for them crashes are not true fans!! I love seeing nice close racing and my favorite drivers to win!! crashes are cool but they are scary and hoping to god they are okay afterwards!!
@ididi9 well thats just sad!! I will say that if a race car crashed its cool to see!! but if the driver is not getting out and not moving around that much thats when it takes all the coolness of the crash away!!
@ididi9 Shut up with your stereotypes. Not all Americans give a shit about NASCAR. Most of us know the sport is irrelevant to the real world. Only good thing about it is the close racing. Since you're so quick to talk about Americans, where are you from. I bet I can easily find a stereotype for your country. Don't generalize us based on the two drunk men near the cameraman.
@ididi9 ROFL! That was hilarious, honestly. I'm not fat. I'm 6'1" 170lbs. Sorry for blowing up tho. I just get annoyed when I see "americans blah blah nascar" cuz I am SO TIRED OF NASCAR!!! If only you knew how much most of us have a complete lack of respect for NASCAR. I mean, I'm amazed at the hype they push. I'm like "rly? how bout some fuel injection or a right turn?" Something even remotely close to new technology (and some right turns to go with the left ones) is all I ask
To the few who say "we won't miss racing in the US" because of the failing marshalls, this is the F1 rescue effort. Compare it to a crash at this track during the Indy 500, you will find that there is a whole flock of rescue workers on the scene within seconds of the car coming to a halt. There it takes about 30 seconds, for the situation to become like it is here after about 3 minutes.
i remember how furious Briatore was at the people around him when no one did anything to help him.. it happend right infront of him and he looked like he was ready to jump over the fence to help Ralf himself..
really disgusting how the regulations required the Medical Car to do a whole lap to get to the start/finish line.. instead of just going backwards
@Playa66 it was a bit frustrating sitting in the stands watching, wondering. But I could see him moving around in the cockpit. Everyone one around me was very concerned, but once we saw him move around and those of us with camcorders mentioned he was moving, we settled down. But the wait while the medical guys were just over the wall was unbelievable. I have video of him, hopefully better than this, that I can post of his extraction.
Disgusts me when I watch this vid in retrospect, saw it live but never really at the time occured to me how bloody long it took for help to get to him, disgusting - honestly, terrible marshall performance, sorry guys........

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge F1 fan and was at all the USGP races. But the ticket prices was the reason for the lack of fans in the seats.
