IMO Hummers are totally impractical - they're too thirsty and too heavy, and not many 'real' wheelers took up on them.     But in the real world, a Defender or Landcruiser is the only offroaders choice.

  • Just a difference in wheelbase, I've seen it a hundred times. A longer wheelbase was better for that obstacle. Find one where you need a really good break-over and it could be a different story.

    Land Rovers from 2000s have 3.9L 182 hp (136 kW) V8 engines and can go places that TWICE as priced H1 with his twice as strong engine (6.5L V8) will never see.

    This vid is massively misleading because it takes a LWB vehicle and "proves" it's better than a D90 by playing to it's strengths and the D90's weaknesses. It's *DELIBERATELY* misleading.

    For a start, a stock D90 would climb better than that. Lower COG. A D130 better still. This vid is BS.

Too many variables that can influence the outcome when other people drive them and you are just watching. Like I said before youtube doesn't prove anything one way or the other as to which may be better.

    From the right angle, I can create a photograph that "proves" a strawberry is bigger than a mellon. And I could make a video that "proves" a D90 is better than a H1 (if I had a H1) just as easily. And both would be as misleading as this vid.

  • @dillbertlee The only vehicles that get through obstacles I can't are ones with twin lockers (usually D90's over here). Hilux, Pajero, Land Cruiser, Patrol, Cherokee, Range Rover, Discovery - I've out-4x4'd 'em all, and in an SJ that cost me less than their tyres cost them.

    I want a 1.6 with bike carbs and a set of front and rear lockrights - then even the V8 twin ARB'd D90's would have to phear me! Mwahahahahaaaa!

    Smiles per pound/dollar, nothing comes *close* to an SJ. Get another!

    The discovery and the defender in that vid have very similar (almost identical) mechanicals, but the discovery has a longer wheelbase. It gets stuck when the defender 90 sails through.

    The Hummer is much longer wheelbase than either of those vehicles - in those same conditions, it would have gotten even more stuck than the Discovery, making the D90 "better".  It's horses for courses.

  • Eh, D90 isn't the best of the Land Rovers for this, but sure you get a better one it could climb is no problem, but all in all the Hummer H1 is the better choice for negotiating any kind of rough terrain

  • The Defenders, Some of the Jeep Wranglers, The Toyota J90's and the H1 are excellent off road vehicles stock. I think this challenge better suits the H1 & that the Defenders tires were in poor shape.

  • This Land Rover is a short wheel base, the Hummer is much longer, not to mention with MUCH bigger tyres. The Hummer has no roof, along with being longer, its centre of gravity is much lower making it climb better.

    The Land Rover is a lot taller making it unstable, along with smaller wheels and a higher centre of gravity.

    Now get both vehicles to try cresting a sharp angle at the top, and watch the Defender sail over it while the Hummer grounds out. Or try pitting a Defender 130 with ARB's and 10ish PSI 33x13.5x16's against the Hummer and watch it crawl up there with the same ease.

They also buy according to brand rarely looking deeper into the components & attributes that determine actual quality. This makes it easy for an auto manufacturer to swap an expensive to produce offering like H1 that has real capability & durability for a fat capped pickup truck like the H2 that costs much much less to produce.

Cheap, fat, stupid vehicle for the cheap, fat, American public... The H1 as it should of been made available is a bit too spartan for the price range it competes in. Americans like cushy, smooth & sweet. Most people who really want an off road vehicle modify a jeep. There are surprisingly few other options in the USA.

Offroading for Americans is trying to get over and between rocks for a mile or two and then going back home in time for Monday work. They get so little time off that they rarely participate in expedition off road. This is one reason (among others) that you do not see Diesels very often. Thinner tires that readily flatten out when deflated are better in most situations this is why Camel trophy vehicles used them.

  • On multiple trips to lesotho in my D90 on what are little less than bridle paths with 500 foot drops i definitely wouldn't want a hummer. Living in Africa i wouldn't have any other vehicle other than my D90 or a Landcruiser '70, spare parts every were and very versatile the hummer wouldn't have a chance on 99% of the roads i ride on in the place were 4x4 is undisputedly the best.
