On the business side, No aircraft will be efficient (in terms of profit) if it flies empty without pax/cargo. Airlines buy different aircraft that would maximize profit, (whether it'd be an a380 or a 787) depending on the demand of the route (and probably the distance). I'm not an expert in this topic but I'm just expressing my opinion. Both Airbus and Boeing have excellent aircraft and neither is better than the other. Each of their model caters to different markets.

@BaghdadSon78 are you mentally instable? The boeing 747 8i is far more efficient than the A380. It does not matter what plane is bigger. It matters how the plane contributes towards our environment. Yes the A380 has a long range and flies with verly low amount of fuel. The 747 8i on the other hand is alot more efficient than the A380.There is no questiona bout it that Boeing is the leader right now due to the fact that they also have the 787 until airbus has its first flight with the A350 XWB.
