Meantime is probably their best, which will probably read like an invitation for loads of people to come pewing at me that a different album was better and Meantime sucke din comparison, but Betty and Strap It On are also great albums. Strap It On was much grislier though, it may take some getting used to.

This song would be so much better if Stanier was on drums. Although page won't agree, helmet was all about the drums. The drums since the departure of john stanier are weak at best. Live the guy can't even pull off the old helmet stuff.  It really pains me.

The killer part about Helmet was the timing - the off tempo transition stuff. This is a good song but it's all 4/4 timing. Not nearly as complicated as stuff off Meantime or Better. The drums and Stanier have a lot to do with that.

Now that's studio, because live I don't think any drummer can match Stannier.

@bcastine1975 I somewhat agree but I always liked Helmet for its bass. When the Bass kicks in, you really start moshing (eg In The Meantime) and enjoying the aggression from it which leads to the heavier drums that Stanier would produce.

Big Helmet fan here. I think this album is a return to form, minus Paige's voice (sounds like he was trying a bit too hard...it would have been good to hear him use the effects in this album that he used in songs like Wilma's Rainbow, for example). Otherwise I'd give Monochrome 4/5 stars, much better than Size Matters.

In fact Betty is almost the weakest as an album despite the tunes are almost all very good.

Everything is fine until the track 6, Rollo, which tends to ruin the album consistancy.

Then the album barely recover until track 9 Vaccination, and the two real tracks left, speechless and overated feels like they are the same and a bit weak.
