it's been "fibre powered" for years i.e. from the exchanges/DSLAMs to the core network. The problem is the access network's still entirely reliant on DSL running over a copper-powered network that is falling apart!

i have 24 meg eircom broadband.the night before it was installed i had 8 meg and was getting around 5.6 to 6.7 meg. then the day i switched to 24 meg my speed was 25k. yes thats right 25k. i had a shit brick on the phone with support. they did help me out after 3 weeks of hell, now i have speed of 19 meg so all is good, but this next gen shit is only for people with 8 meg and under.Ireland will always be behind Europe when it comes to BB, but only by 20 years so we are catching up :(

If Eircom spent their money on a decent network and not flashy ads we'd be nearly half as good as the rest of Europe. Seriously, it's a joke. In France you can get 20mb broadband with free calls to most of the world and HD TV for 29.00 a month!

In about 50 years they'll swap those out for fibre too.

@MandolinMan0001 Costs them money, they'd have to get permits etc. Also it doesn't help that the government lets them keep a hold of the local-loop cash cow.

We've had fibre down under the ground in almost all towns now for years, nobody wanted to use them possibly because customers can get terrible service from very cheap and government supported 3g internet.

20mb? Cable isn't dsl, but it might just be that those countries put down some very high quality copper.

Don't forget dublin can get 24mbit if they're right beside an eircom exchange in some areas.

8MB Broadband capped @ 10GB download allowance for 50 EUR/Month?

While most other countries got rid of any sort of cap 6 years ago and use speeds up to a 100Mbit, (Germany testing 1GBit) we still struggle with under 10Mbit lines and download allowances.

If I simply buy a new PC game online on steam and download it, I use up 7-20GB, depending on the game.
