Ok, first of all Smart Cars are WAY to small. I am 5'11 and riding in a smart car is not fun at all. You feel like a sardine in a tin can. Secondly, the car is not safe. It is pure logic. If I got into a collision going 40 - 50 with a smart car in my 6800 pound Toyota Tundra the person in the smart car is going to die. My bumper would impact the Smart Car at their headlight level. The agree we need to make better cars for the environment but make it so you stand a chance in a major accident.
Why don't you check with the NHTSA or NCAP and see how safe they are? It's more meaningful than idle speculation. And check out the results for full-sized vans and pick-up while you're at it. They may surprise you.
@pf126p, yeah no matter what the test says, if you crash one of those into another vehicle or say a semi, you dont stand a chance against 40,000lbs in your little tin can.
@123ewq crash anything that is a passenger vehicle into a fully loaded semi and statistics are against you, I don't care if it is in a smart or a Toyota or a Chevy Suburban. It is a ridiculous comparison. Now compared to other cars, this one kicks ass and holds its own. No car is 'perfect' so why select this one to slam and not say a Chevy Aveo or a Nissan Sentra.... don't let the fact that this car is a micro be your only reason to judge it as unsafe. You would be fooling yourself.
@pf126p Yes they are safe but I bet his knees were shaking next to that rig.. my thought has always been who wants to take the risk? You would have to have allot of confidence in the smart car to try crossing the mackinac bridge or going 70MPH on a freeway next to a semi... need some balls too.
@freespeachrulez I've driven many thousands of miles on Interstates doing 70+MPH. Not a problem. I pass Semis quite regularly, and the smart isn't any MORE affected by the semi's pressure wave than any other high profile vehicle (which it is, by the way). Strong cross winds blow it around a bit too, just like any other high profile vehicle. I generally accelerate past them ... not to avoid getting blown around but to avoid stones from hitting my windshield.
@smart451cab I owned a chevy spectrum.. and even in a astro van I try to avoid high winds. I would get one just because you can park it pretty much anywhere.. I seen a lady try pulling into a empty parking space.. turns out there was a smart car in the spot.. haha.. I love these little things!!!
@littlegottsy33 That what a god damn vehile is for. People rarely use a Truck or Suv for anything but to feel more manly, to buy into a hype, or to show off. And usually the idiots are the ones driving the biggest vehicles. So yes, the Silverado is the Safety Hazard, and no the Smart Guy in the Smart Car who is obviously using his brain. Who did you say hit the Smart Car? Oh thats right, THE SMART CAR DIDNT HIT ANYONE! Have you ever seen a Hummer Crash Test? One hummer model folded in a crash!!!
I was involved in an accident where i was hit by a tractor trailer and i was driving a Ford Explorer , i was not hurt but you could not tell by looking at my car which was smashed to hell, but everyone who saw my car afterwords said "oh my god , thank god you wern't driving a tiny little car" me and my dad were talking about the Smart for Two and i asked him what he though would have happened if i was driving that car during my accident and he said "you wouldn't have known what hit ya "
Point well taken, but...see that Mustang in the left lane? A tractor trailer would tear that thing apart like a tin can just as easily as it would flatten a smart car.
On the other hand, I could see how a smart car would be affected by the draft of a tractor trailer passing by it at hi-speed. I'd be interested to see what would happen in that situation. It's too boxy to avoid the shears like a little mazda or honda would.
it has wheels, it has an engine, you can drive it from point a to b, you can drive 140km/u, like most roadsters it can take 2 people but unlike most roadsters it can also take a lot of luggage, .......i feel sorry for you , man, you probably never drove a Smart car.
@igorny What you made is an ignorant statement. I've driven mine for over 35,000 miles in the past 2 years. This is the 16th car I've owned in my life and has proven to be one of the most reliable. I've owned American made by all of the Big 3. Everything from "Classics" to brand new from the show room floor. I speak from nearly 4 decades of automotive experience with a realistic open mind. Maybe the only thing that would be worth "keeping" is you keeping your opinion to yourself.
I know you posted this 7 months ago and it has been idle in the comments department. But, in answer to your question: "how safe is the tiny car? " ... my daily driver is an '08 smart cabriolet, and it is more safe than most of the cars on the road. Crash cage (Tridion safety cell), roll bar, ABS, Stability control, 4 airbags, autotensioning belts. 5 star crash tests, 3 stars to the rear. It's a Daimler product.
Did you even watch that video??? It clearly SUPPORTS my claim that the smart is one of the safest cars on the road.
When they crashed the RC smart into 20 tons of concrete from 70 MPH, the passenger compartment remained intact, the doors both opened and closed. In other words, it passed the crash test brilliantly.
Any passengers would most likely have died in the crash. But, that would be true no matter WHAT they were driving.
For the record, I did not buy my smart for its fuel efficiency.
@kenyoung1981 you are entitled to your opinion, but it is not based on facts. I've driven my smart for 2.5 years with over 35,000 miles now. I know its safe in the 'real world'. I bet you dont feel the same about Miata's, Sentras, or Aveos, all of which are far less safe.
Well they are one of the safest in their class. And in fact anytime I'm near a small car at all, or motorcycle, I feel the same way. I drive buses, used to drive trucks. I just hope I'm never in a wreck involving a small car or bike.

Overnite Transportation is now UPS Freight. You won't be seeing those trailers for too long.

Oh, and it is worth noting, that RC smart was a 450 ... the one currently sold is the 451 ... which is even more beefy in the safety department.

Look how well the brakes work. Mercedes designed the smart with a brake assist system. It helps you stop a lot faster.
