  • Interesting locomotive here---is the Walschaerts drive a retrofit? The steam chests are centered over the cylinders consistent with a factory Stevenson-valve-geared set-up (whereas Virginia & Truckee #29, a 2-8-0, has the chests positioned slightly outboard to line up the slides with the factory rod drive).

  • @bcschmerker the six does have a stevenson valve gear she received that valve gear while at Surry Sussex and Southapton railway.

  • The stack on it in this 2005 video was something special for a movie which the 6 appeared. The stack was "short lived" and now residing in the loft at the shop.

The onion stack is the normal one.

  • This is the first time I've seen #6 with a balloon stack instead of the "onion" stack. Do they swap them every few years or something?

  • Did 6 get a new stack? Doesn't she normally wear an onion stack. It looked like a Balloon just now.

  • That's a simulated Hunter & Radley stack.

  • The screech whistle is also used as a get out of my way whistle. But sometimes engineers will blow that at the crossings

  • You are not imagining things; the 6 has two whistles.

The screech is the original "woods" whistle that was on the engine from day one. This type of whistle was typical of engines working in the forest industry.

The other whistle was added when the 6 arrived at the MCRR.

  • The Six is an oil burner (as well as the Shay, #9). Originally built for hard fuels, when it was rebuilt between 1971 and 1988 it was converted to oil.

  • I like the #6 also, real neat running locomotive

  • Love #6!

  • i second that!

  • I Third that, 2-6-0 Moguls are my Favourite Steam Locomotives...
