  • One of the greatest Jazz n' Blues singers of all time delivers this heartbreakin, moving Jazz ballad with moans, wails and vocalese that tells a story of a lifetime of abuse, neglect and pain.

The original song originally had lyrics. Whilst Etta was on leave from psychiatric hospital she recorded this song. An outpouring of pain and sorrow whilst going thru a drug detox, she was unable to articulate the words in the studio session and just moaned the expression of her tortoured soul.

  • this is soul

  • Whenever you're feeling down, and in the dirt, listen to this incredible voice expressing such incredible pain, anguish, and suffering. It will permit you to release whatever emotions you have clogged-up inside, and to also realise that your not alone in this world!

  • this song has more emotion than any song ive heard

  • why is it a split screen of Etta & Beyonce???

LOVE THIS, SO EMOTIONAL, TEARS FLOWING.

  • so emotional!

  • Vocalise at its AfrAmericentric best. (I also like Bachianas Brasileras. Vocalise at its Brazilian best.)

  • Words fail.

  • Absolutely no words... painfully, beautifully amazing. The late Phyllis Hyman really channeled Etta James in her music. Her influence among female singers is really under-rated. I wish more of these younger so-called singers would study this woman.

  • @autsim OMG I SOOOOOO SO AGREE..I LOVE THIS WOMAN..NO ONE CAN COMPARE TO HER SKILLS!! LOVE BEYONCE BUT SHE AINT GOT NOTHING ON ETTA!!!

  • @nycamk When she was doing this album "Come a Little Closer" in 1974, she was doing rehab at Tarzana. This particular song here is when she was going through withdrawal so all she could do that day was moan and groan and they just let the tape roll.

  • @harvsoul also on this same album in the US was a version of St. Louis Woman that is amazing for the way it channels the 1920s jazz feeling but updates it to the 1970s.

  • yes, it's simpy amazing, no words for this

  • I heard this song many years ago while I was driving. In those days the Internet was not available. I called the CBC and asked what it was. I ran to the music store and special order a double album with this track on it. It is absolutely amazing to hear her.
